Setting

Analogue in Algaida

Lo-fi pursuits abound at boutique retreat Treurer Olive Grove & Grand House, a rural eight-room finca overlooking Mallorca’s sweeping Randa Valley. Surrounded by 58 acres of pine forest and olive groves, this is an arcadian spot in which to kick back, sip cold cervezas and flick through a dog-eared copy of Cervantes; to enjoy sunkissed siestas by the outdoor pool, and drench still-warm bread in puddles of extra virgin — the estate’s house-pressed green gold.

Our favourite rooms

Period details such as exposed stone, beamed ceilings and tiled floors bring bonafide Balearic charm to the finca’s eight rooms and suites, each flanked by large private terraces for alfresco downtime a casa. But make no mistake: when you’re supine in your in-room deep soaking tub, Nespresso espresso in hand, you’re going to feel anything but rustic. Bag the vaulted double room for its unique arched sandstone ceiling, or upgrade to a first-floor suite for extra lounging room and superior valley views.

Packing tips

A penchant for all things olive — as well as drizzling estate-produced oil over dishes as you desire, you’ll get a taste for the crop in the shower, too, as the hotel’s custom bath products are made with the finca’s harvest.

Also

The gnarled olive tree on the terrace is around 500 years old and archeological remains discovered around the estate date back further still, some as far as the Muslim occupation of Mallorca over 1,000 years ago.

Children

Treurer Olive Grove & Grand House welcomes over-14s only.

Sustainability efforts

The finca sits on an estate of around 3,000 olive trees, producing its own extra virgin olive oil using traditional Mallorcan farming methods. The olive grove helps to offset the hotel’s (minimal) carbon footprint: waste water is used to irrigate the groves, solar panels provide much of the estate’s power, and the organic products found in your bathroom are made using homegrown olive oil. The restaurant sources much of its seasonal produce from local farms and markets, and you’re encouraged to order meals in advance, the better to minimise food waste. You won’t find a single-use plastic product anywhere on the property, and the finca is working to reduce the use of all plastics across the estate.

Top Table

All tables on Treurer’s balmy patio come with views to dine for.

Dress Code

Classic monochrome linens fit the Balearic brief; layer up to linger over dessert after the stars have come out.

Hotel restaurant

All honeyed stone walls, wooden beams and rustic furnishings, Finca Treurer Restaurant is a Balearic classic, fringed by olive trees. Here, the estate’s velvety extra virgin is king, and ingredients for your crab croquettes, pork cheeks in red wine and zingy lemon-and-gin sorbet are sourced fresh from neighbouring farms and markets. Come for the olive oil, stay for the views: alfresco tables overlook the Cura and Randa hills. Themed evenings make the best of this superlative outdoor space, combining tours of the olive groves and finca with sunset barbecues and starlit tasting menus accompanied by Mallorcan and Spanish wines.

Worth getting out of bed for

At Treurer Olive Grove & Grand House, you’ll want to extract the most out of your sojourn on an actual working olive farm: take a guided tour of the estate, or get hands on with the harvest at a half-day cooking workshop (culminating in dining on the fruits of your new-found skills, paired with wine, naturally).

Strike out for lost-in-time mountain villages and lazy, vino tinto de verano-fuelled lunches in the hills. Make nearby Algaida your first port of call, with its distinctive sandstone buildings, lively Friday market, and clutch of 19th-century windmills at which to tilt.

Or join a hike up the Puig de Randa to lookout point and monastery with altitude, 13th-century Santuari de Cura. Your saintly reward: unforgettable panoramas, taking in undulating green hills that roll down towards Palma, the Bay of Pollença and the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana

Local restaurants

It’s a short drive north into the historic, windmill-dotted village of Algaida, where the grilled meat and fish dishes and classic Mediterranean paellas at Restaurant Es 4 Vents might well blow you away. South of Treurer, the Santuari de Cura restaurant atop Puig de Randa comes with wraparound island scenery from its high vantage point, teamed with modern Mallorcan cuisine and local vintages.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this 16th-century finca in rural Mallorca, switched their mobile devices back on and unpacked their stash of the estate’s own olive oil, a full account of their analogue adventure will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Treurer Olive Grove & Grand House near Algaida…

Switched-off solitude is the house speciality of Treurer Olive Grove & Grand House, where you’re more likely to find yourself playing checkers in the gardens or browsing books on olive oil production in the library than watching TV in your (admittedly rather alluring) room or suite.

There’s an authentic rustic charm about the place — a typically Mallorcan stone finca flanked by forested mountain slopes and acres of olive groves, with a farming pedigree that reaches back hundreds of years. Seek out current custodians the Miralles family for a natter: their passion for the estate’s history is matched only by their knowledge of oil production — you can sample the fruits of their labours on guided tours of the estate and at themed evenings in the finca restaurant.

While it’s not exactly a schlep to get there — the finca is a mere 30 minutes inland from Palma — it feels a world away from Mallorca’s all-singing beach resorts: ‘action’ at Treurer equates to balmy pine-scented breezes, flamingo-pink sunsets and the occasional muted hoot of a long-eared owl punctuating the peace of spellbinding starlit nights.
