Cal Reiet Holistic Retreat

Style

Agroturismo tonic

Setting

Sunshine-hued Santanyí

Cal Reiet Holistic Retreat’s name is an apt introduction, but there’s plenty more to uncover at this boutique hotel in Santanyí. Its charming farmhouse dates back to 1881 (its two-bedroom casitas are decades older), but today’s offerings are suitably 21st-century: mod-Scandi interiors, daily yoga and wholesome, plant-based dining. Aromatherapy massages and poolside siestas are soul-calming ways to switch off and focus on your wellbeing — do the same but with a different backdrop at nearby nature reserves and azure calas

Need to know

Rooms

15, including two suites.

Check–Out

11am; check-in, 3pm. Both are flexible, on request and subject to availability.

Also

Although Standard Room One is adapted with a roll-in shower and grab bars, the uneven outdoor pathways around the resort are not suitable for wheelchairs, and the spa isn't accessible.

Hotel closed

The hotel opens annually from February to November.

At the hotel

Library, yoga shala and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: air-conditioning, tea- and coffee-making kit, free bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and organic bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Scandi-inspired interiors at Cal Reiet Holistic Retreat bring spa-like serenity throughout. The Luxury Romance Room delivers on its name with its by-the-bed freestanding bath tub, lofty ceilings and a shared, outdoor terrace. For extra privacy and space, bag a two-bedroom casita, set across the fountain-adorned courtyard from the main house.

Poolside

A vine-laced pergola, seashell-white parasols and waterside bar are your shaded spots between saltwater dips at the peaceful, outdoor pool. It’s open from 9am to 6pm, and makes for a refreshing way to limber up before a session at the next-door yoga shala.

Spa

The small spa looks like a humble, traditional outbuilding with its aged wooden door and honey-hued stone, but indoors reveals a polished wellness area. A sauna, hammam and alfresco hot tub are soothing staples, and a menu of aromatherapy therapies and restorative massages go the extra mile. There’s a small cardio room if you’d like to up the ante beyond yoga and meditation classes; holistic rituals, such as full-moon ceremonies or private sessions, earn Cal Reiet its name.

Packing tips

This retreat is primed for analogue relaxation: you won’t find any screens in your room. Follow suit and tick off your to-be-read list, get into journalling or master mindfulness.

Also

The hotel runs wellness retreats throughout the year, so you may cross paths with other higher-plane-seeking yogis.

Children

Welcome, but this retreat is better suited to adults. If you’ve got a little Smith in tow, most rooms have a single sofa-bed that can be made up on request, plus the two-bedroom casitas sleep up to five.

Sustainability efforts

Your hosts’ healing touch extends to the environment: they annually track their carbon footprint to continue to reduce it; eschew single-use plastics; rely on local suppliers; opt for solar power where possible, and recycle rainwater for irrigation.

Food and Drink

Top Table

You'll dine communally around the large table in the winter garden, but smaller tables also spill out onto the terrace.

Dress Code

Breezy linens, earthy hues and considered accessories to follow in the hotel’s Scandi-slash-Mallorcan design footsteps.

Hotel restaurant

Cal Reiet's Table elevates plant-based dining to an art form, spotlighting zero-kilometre vegetarian cuisine. A healthy, breakfast buffet is laid out in the homely, open-plan kitchen each morning, with homemade offerings such as coconut yoghurt, granola, almond butter and gluten-free bread, alongside organic eggs, just-pressed juices and local cheeses, plus daily changing hot options.

The wholesome approach to cooking continues throughout the day, with the house poke bowl a firm favourite at lunchtime; dinner’s innovative dishes play with texture, colour and flavour pairings — Mallorcan-spiced parsnips with tofu crumbs, wasabi-dressed kohlrabi noodles, seitan with a cacao sauce.

Hotel bar

Saltwater swims offer plenty of refreshment; the pool bar does, too, with its homemade juices, something-stronger cocktails and veggie snacks. If you fancy a drink after sunset, you can order one anywhere in the hotel until 10pm.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 8.30am to 11am, lunch is between noon and 3pm, and dinner is from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. The pool bar opens from noon to 6pm.

You’ll find Cal Reiet Holistic Retreat on the peaceful fringes of market town Santanyí, close to Mallorca's southeastern coastline.

Planes

Palma de Mallorca Airport is a 40-minute drive from the hotel; staff can arrange one-way transfers from €95.

Automobiles

You might like a set of wheels for taking in nearby beaches, further-afield market towns and local wineries, plus there’s free parking at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

With plenty of sun-kissed corners to stretch out in, your spirit animal might resemble something feline at Cal Reiet Holistic Retreat. And so, perfect your cat-cow at the yoga shala, the setting for your morning class that’s included with your stay, before a garden-swathed meditation or some alone time at the spa, in the sauna or checked in for a detoxifying treatment.

Beyond the retreat’s cosseting embrace, you can pick up artisanal goods at Santanyí’s bi-weekly market, and head for scenic, at-one-with-nature hikes. Mondragó Natural Park is a coastal reserve with prime birdwatching opportunities, pine-forested ravines, and turquoise coves, which are pristine swimming spots. You’ll find plenty more of those on Mallorca’s southeastern coast — Cala Llombards and Cala Santanyí are picture-perfect beaches to linger on, from lunch to sunset.

Local restaurants

Cal Reiet’s vegetarian meals are balanced with all the nutrients and protein you could need, but you’ll have to venture beyond the hotel to satisfy any carnivorous cravings. Restaurant Manique brings Brazilian flavours and flair to Santanyí, where you’ll scoop up scallop carpaccio and chimichurri-doused tuna with fire-toasted flatbreads in a plant-filled, exposed-stone dining room. At Can Na Pou, polished Mallorquín plates pay homage to the owner’s family, and it’s a crowd pleaser for everything from brunches of pa amb oli to aperitifs and unhurried dinners.

Local cafés

The bright colours of Mallorquino’s accent walls and terrace translate to its healthy breakfasts of açai bowls, fresh smoothies and avo toast — crepes and cocktails are on hand if you’re after something less virtuous.

Cal Reiet Holistic Retreat hits the sweet spot: a health-conscious stay that doesn’t take over with restrictive regimes. Instead, you can tap into its wellness offerings as much or little as you like.

Its pedigree is in yoga retreats, which still run regularly with breathwork gurus and movement specialists, and a daily class is included with your stay. But this soft-hued boutique hotel is also expert in moments of pause: linger over breakfast, stretch out in the spa, read in the lush gardens — nab something from the hotel’s library, formerly Santanyí’s central one.

The most retreat-like part of this restorative stay is perhaps the food: all-plant-based dining, with homemade breakfasts, fresh lunches and nutritious dinners. But you won't get any dirty looks if you order another course, opt for a cocktail over smoothie by the pool, or head into Santanyí for some well-deserved decadence. Health is all about balance, after all.
