Lifts serve all floors of Gran Hotel Margalida, but the cliffside location may otherwise prove challenging for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility. The indoor and outdoor pools are sadly not wheelchair accessible.

Hotel closed

Gran Hotel Margalida closes in mid-December and reopens at the end of February.

Our favourite rooms

You won’t want for sea views at Gran Hotel Margalida, where every balcony, terrace and strategically placed sunlounger promises wave-watching Mediterranean vistas. Our chosen viewpoint for really soaking these up is concealed behind an unassuming door in the Sunset Suite. Here lies a sunken whirlpool tub, promising soul-stirring views of sea, sky and — as the name suggests — sunset. The yellow tub in the Margalida Suite is also reason enough to upgrade yourself (and your bath time).

Poolside

Flanked by striped sunloungers, the outdoor infinity pool makes the most of the hotel’s sea-to-sky views; there’s a second, indoor pool in the spa.

Spa

Whether your muscles are complaining after a morning on the Tramuntana trails or an afternoon sprawled across a sunlounger (both are perfectly valid), this spa has an antidote for everything. Sweat and stretch it out on the Reformer Pilates beds, then move between the indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath and cold plunge before a tailored-to-you massage or glow-boosting facial.

Packing tips

Sun, sea, sand and... serras. You’ll want a good-sized water bottle and a decent pair of walking boots if you plan to conquer a hiking trail or two in the mighty Serra de Tramuntana range, as well you should.

The steep walk to and from Cala Banyalbufar beach has leg day covered, but a buggy transfer is also available.

Pet‐friendly

The restaurant at Gran Hotel Margalida is committed to zero-kilometre cooking, which translates to fish straight from the Mediterranean, farm-fresh Tramuntana meats and cheeses, silky olive oil from neighbouring groves and a wine list that leans heavily into Mallorcan viticulture. Elsewhere, LED bulbs conserve energy thanks to timers and motion sensors, and water-saving devices are built into taps and showers throughout.

Hotel restaurant

Suspended high above the sea, Margalida’s top-tier cliffside vantage point pairs Med-and-mountain panoramas with seasonal local dishes and a wine cellar stuffed with some 250 labels. The kitchen’s zero-kilometre approach means the menu changes daily. You’ll only ever dine on the freshest market ingredients and local catches here, but steak tartare, seabass with salsa verde, and peach tarte tatin should offer a flavour of what to expect. 

Hotel bar

Well shucks, there’s a French-inspired oyster bar for all your citrusy raw seafood needs. Snacks, drinks and cocktails are also served poolside between 11am and 7pm. Sample a signature Salvia Dream, made with gin, sotol, zesty lime and a mule’s kick of ginger.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 8am to 11am, lunch from 1pm to 3.30pm and dinner from 7pm to 10.30pm. The oyster bar runs from 5pm to 11pm.

Gran Hotel Margalida is set in the rural village of Banyalbufar, sandwiched between the Tramuntana mountains and sparkling Mediterranean on Mallorca's north-west coast.

Planes

Palma de Mallorca Airport is a 40-minute drive from the hotel. Transfers can be arranged for €260 (each way) for up to three passengers.

Automobiles

North-west Mallorca’s frozen-in-time villages are ideally discovered by car, as long as you’re comfortable with the occasional narrow road and hairpin bend, that is. There’s no parking at the hotel, but the free valet service will nip your vehicle to a nearby public lot until you need it.

Other

If you’re island hopping, regular ferries connect Mallorca with Ibiza and Formentera, as well as mainland Spain (including Barcelona, Valencia and Dénia). The closest marina is Port d’Alcúdia, around 40 minutes’ drive from the hotel; although many services also dock in Palma.

Worth getting out of bed for

You’ll want to immerse yourself fully in the Tramuntana landscape. Gran Hotel Margalida runs a free shuttle down to the amphitheatre-style beach at Cala Banyalbufar and sunset sailing excursions capture the coastline’s agricultural terraces in all their dramatically tiered glory. A hike in the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana is practically a rite of passage here; likewise sipping chilled Malvasia in a terraced vineyard overlooking the sea. Try local favourites like small-scale Celler Ca’n Pico, or Son Vich de Superna winery with its picturesque patio. Olive oil, the island’s other coveted, bottled product can be sampled in the centuries-old groves at San Moragues, east along the shoreline. 

Wander Sa Volta des General, a meandering coastal path that connects the village of Banyalbufar and its 16th-century stone watchtower to the tiny cove at Es Port des Canonge. Or, for something a little buzzier, it’s just a 40-minute drive to the mediaeval fortresses, Gothic spires and market-filled plazas of Palma. 

Local restaurants

In Banyalbufar, family-run Son Tomàs deals in fresh, unfussy Mallorcan cuisine, with a downstairs bar for casual drinks and a terrace upstairs that just screams date night. Nearby Ca’n Paco is a solid choice for those who appreciate authentic paella and Mallorca’s traditional arroz brut (aka ‘dirty rice’), a rich, rustic dish of game meat, spices and Balearic sobrasada sausage. 

Local bars

You’ll need to make for Palma’s trendsetting bars — Bar Ábaco, Brassclub et al — if it’s nightlife in the traditional sense that you seek. Laidback restaurant-adjacent bars are more Banyalbufar’s speed. You’ll find sundowner options at Sa Cova and Son Tomàs.

Gran Hotel Margalida clings tightly to Banyalbufar’s ruggedly handsome cliffs, way out on Mallorca’s wild, west coast. This is the island’s lesser tamed postcode, but there’s nothing rough around the edges of this adults-only boutique bolthole. Curvaceous mid-century silhouettes, spacious bedrooms, and an alluring infinity pool are a siren call for sun-worshipping minimalists. Inside, palm fronds sway beneath whirring fans, botanical prints climb the walls, and joyful jolts of yellow ricochet throughout, from handpainted ceramics to monogrammed bathrobes.
