Palma’s Gothic heart

At boutique city stay Can Cera, a former 17th-century Mallorcan palace in the thick of Palma’s Old Town, grand staircases and original stone arches meet modern art. Our favourite rooms

Suite Can Cera, the hotel’s biggest bedroom, was once the palace’s ballroom and now has a dramatic four-poster and a private terrace. Inside, there are pretty tiles painted by the La Roqueta factory plus carved woodwork detailing. If you’re going for one of the smaller room categories, request a courtyard view.

Spa

The Finnish sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi can all be booked for private use, at no extra charge. Upgrade your thermal downtime with a facial or body therapy using organic, Spanish-made Seaskin products in the spa’s treatment room.

Packing tips

Pack comfortable shoes for days spent walking, and a book to curl up with afterwards — perhaps in the rocking chair in the library or on the sofa overlooking the courtyard.

Also

You can use the gym at Smith-approved sister stay, Sant Jaume Design Hotel, which is a five-minute walk away.

Sustainability efforts

The owners have taken care to protect Can Cera’s cultural heritage, restoring a 17th-century building with natural materials. The hotel also collaborates with Mallorca Preservation, a non-profit organisation that spotlights sustainable use of the island’s resources. Water-saving devices are used on all taps and showers, and the hotel does not use single-use plastics. In the restaurant, food is sourced as locally as possible from Mallorcan producers.

Diners tend to dress up a little for this grown-up space — expect linen dresses, pastel shirts and the occasional straw hat at breakfast.

Hotel restaurant

At breakfast in the sun-dappled courtyard, homemade breads and cakes vye to sate your hunger alongside fresh fruit and omelettes made to order. Later in the day, a simple tapas-style menu showcases the island’s larder, from delicately cured Don Bocarte anchovies to artisan cheeses from S’Asglà.

Hotel bar

Can Cera’s dark marble bar sets the mood for a classic cocktail or a glass of Mallorcan wine. Whether you’ve eaten in the hotel or not, Can Cera is full of atmospheric corners for a digestif before last orders at 11.30pm.

Address
Can Cera
Sant Francesc, 8
Palma de Mallorca
07001
Spain

You’ll find Can Cera on a quiet street in Palma’s Gothic Old Town, just off Plaça de Santa Eulàlia.

Planes

Palma airport, also known as Son Sant Joan, is a 15-minute taxi ride from the hotel. On request, Can Cera can arrange a Mercedes E-Class transfer for €95 one-way.

Automobiles

Palma is a very walkable city and there is no need to hire a car. For those planning to explore the island beyond the city, there's a private carpark next to Can Cera, from €39 a night.

Other

The hotel is a 10-minute drive from Palma port where ferries travel to and from the other Balearic islands as well as to Barcelona and Valencia on the mainland.

Worth getting out of bed for

Can Cera is moments from two of the city’s noted churches and a 10-minute walk from Palma’s magnificent Gothic cathedral, known by locals as La Seu. It’s also a 10-minute stroll to Passeig del Born, the tree-lined boulevard of boutiques in the middle of the city. Nearby, Rialto Living, inside a 15th-century palace, has an up-to-the-minute homewares edit. Mimbrería Vidal is the place for wicker baskets, and Gordiola is a storied island glassblower’s. For modern art lovers, it’s worth a trip to Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani de Palma, which also has staggering views of the marina from the ramparts.

For a day by the sea, head to Assaona beach club. To explore a neighbourhood beyond Palma’s Old Town, make for Santa Catalina, where there’s great coffee at Sama and croissants at Thomas’ Bakeshop. The covered Mercat de Santa Catalina is a fun place to sample the island’s seafood and sobrassada.

Local restaurants

For sensational tapas made with local ingredients, our tip is El Camino. It’s wise to book a few months in advance for the counter-style seats from Eddie Hart (one of the founders of London’s Barrafina) but the soft-centred Spanish tortilla and Mallorcan wine list are worth it. Spot in Santa Catalina is another acclaimed dining spot worth booking in advance to feast on Mediterranean sharing plates. For something a little more traditional, the roast suckling pig at La Bodeguilla never comes off the menu.

Local cafés

It’s just a three-minute walk from the hotel to tiny artisan coffee joint Acco, which also makes excellent banana bread. Plumo, fuelling the island’s cyclists (and in-the-know locals), is also nearby.

Local bars

Cav, a bottle shop and wine bar on Carrer de la Gerreria, is your go-to for a glass before supper. A cool crowd heads for late-night cocktails at Mirall Bar inside the Nobis Hotel — this works particularly well after dinner at El Camino’s little sibling, El Caminito, a minute down the road.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique city stay in the Mallorcan capital and unpacked their hand-blown glassware, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Can Cera in Palma…

You might think a 17th-century palace would be easy to spot, but Can Cera’s huge wooden doors conceal this storied stay within Palma’s Casco Antiguo (though passers-by are often drawn to peek through the letterbox). Inside, this boutique hotel has the air of a private home, offering an unusual degree of calm for somewhere so central.

Original stone arches, grand staircases and hand-carved wooden doors ground the interiors – which nod to the building’s heritage without ever feeling stuffy. And in the cobbled courtyard, local artist Jaume Roig’s wonderfully wonky ceramic pots bring character to apéritifs al fresco.

Between the churches of Santa Eulàlia and Sant Francesc, and within walking distance of desirable restaurants and shops, the location is hard to beat. Come during Semana Santa and you might catch the Good Friday procession passing through the street.
