Setting

Old Town abode

Palma’s past is woven into its vibrant, creative present at Sant Jaume Design Hotel, a boutique pied-à-terre set in an artfully updated mansion. Soothing, sand-toned rooms spotlight hand-loomed textiles and ink-on-linen illustrations by Mallorcan artists. In the atrium, an abstract sculpture soars skyward — follow it up to the rooftop terrace, where poolside cocktails and cathedral views make up the warp and weft of sunny afternoons. Rounding out the tapestry are a regionally-focused tapas restaurant and small, sultry spa.

Our favourite rooms

The views of Convent de Santa Magdalena make mornings in a Junior Suite especially pleasing — opt for the Junior Suite Terrace, and you can be sipping coffee alfresco while the sisters prepare their daily pastries within the cloisters.

Poolside

The rooftop plunge pool is framed by frilly greenery, with views of the cathedral and Old Town terracotta roofs unspooling beyond — pick a spire-gazing sunlounger and settle in with a George Sand novel and a glass of sangria. The pool is open from 9am to 9pm, and children are welcome.

Spa

The hotel’s spa is small but mighty, with a single treatment room for massages, facials and body scrubs using Seaskin’s organic, Spanish-made products. The heated lap pool and sauna will prove especially welcome after a day spent strolling cobbled streets, but if your batteries are unspent, hit the fitness room or book a private yoga or Pilates session. Personal training can also be arranged (in-room, in the gym or at the beach) and the concierge can suggest guided running routes around the city, too.

Packing tips

A pair of Birkenstock clogs will serve a dual purpose: both sensible cobblestone footwear, and a core part of the uniform for a sundowner at cool Palma pavement cafés.

Also

The hotel’s starry collection of Spanish modern art focuses on the atrium, where you’ll find work by Jordi Alcaraz and Robert Ferrer i Martorell among others. In rooms, pieces by Mallorcan-born Estefanía Pomar Aloy and Victòria Masdeu take centre stage.

Hotel restaurant

When curating their Mediterranean menu, the team at El Colmado traversed the island trying fine artisanal produce from small Mallorcan growers, makers and delicatessens — it’s a chore, but someone had to do it. The result is a selection of tapas from traditional seafood sauté to cheese and fig jam from a family-run cheesemonger and homemade sourdough with the island’s heirloom ramallet tomato. Sharing-shy diners will delight in larger plates such as lamb shank with truffled potato gratin.

Hotel bar

There’s no separate bar, but on leisurely evenings a casa, you can get acquainted with El Colmados’ craft cocktail menu and local-wine list.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at El Colmado from 8am to 11am; lunch from 1pm to 3.30pm, and dinner from 7.30pm to 10pm.

The hotel is under 20 minutes’ drive from Palma de Mallorca Airport. Staff can arrange transfers on request (€95 each way for up to three passengers and three pieces of luggage).

Worth getting out of bed for

You can admire the spectacular Gothic architecture of Palma Cathedral from the hotel’s rooftop terrace, but it’s well worth heading inside to admire Gaudí’s soaring, stained glass-dappled interiors. Opposite the cathedral is the Royal Palace of La Almudaina, an Arab fortress turned Mallorcan residence of the Spanish royal family that serves as a patchwork of architectural influences on the island since the 14th century. Window-shopping is starred on Paseo del Borne, Palma’s leafy, central promenade lined with designer boutiques. If you’ve still suitcase space to fill, strike out onto La Rambla, where you’ll sometimes find market stalls and flower stands. Otherwise, graze your way around Mercat de l’Olivar, stocking up on local cheese, wine, sobrassada and more as you go. When the Balearic calls, Playa de Palma’s golden sands are within easy reach — a bike ride along the coastal cycle path is an especially scenic way to reach it. Playa Ciudad Jardín is a quieter, family-friendly option, with gentle waters making it a prime spot for a paddle.

Local restaurants

Perched on a stool at El Camino's long marble counter, you’ll have a front-row seat as the chefs whip up salt cod, ricotta-filled courgette flowers and other seasonal tapas from the team behind London’s Barrafina. Vaulted and chandelier-lit, Tast Club is an underground spot that’s notoriously hard to find if you’re not in the know. Happily, it’s on Carrer de Sant Jaume, so you can saunter down and order one of their talked-about tortillas — we’re eyeing the artichoke and sobrassada — with minimal effort and maximum smugness.

Local cafés

Mistral Coffee House will make a morning person of you with Mallorcan-roasted craft coffee, plus sourdough sandwiches, pastries, granola and — if you need extra coaxing — ice cream-scooped cherry pie. Alternatively, stop by the hatch in the wall at the Augustine convent next to the hotel, where the sisters sell their traditional pastas de Santa Magdalena buns and other homemade pastries.

Local bars

Natural wine bar Petit La Sang is a beloved neighbourhood spot, pairing their meticulously chosen bottles with tempting piles of local cheese, olives and charcuterie. At Bar Nicolás you might order all manner of spritzes, sours and craft cocktails inspired by the city, but the true speciality is the simple G&T.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this art-filled hotel in Mallorca and unpacked their ikat textiles and tins of olives, a full account of their cultured break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Sant Jaume Design Hotel in Palma…

At first glance, Robert Ferrer i Martorell’s abstract sculpture is the undeniable centrepiece at Sant Jaume Design Hotel, reaching up totem-like through the sunlit atrium–cum-modern art gallery. Look closer, though, and the real magic of this boutique Palma stay comes into focus — the homegrown craftsmanship that’s on display throughout. Rooms are pocket galleries of Mallorcan handiwork, handmade textiles and illustrations by local artists softening the minimalist interiors. There’s equal thought behind the restaurant’s tapas menu, with ingredients carefully sourced from family-run delis, traditional smokeries and organic farms. It’s a spirit that even infuses the spa, where Balearic sea-salt scrubs are followed up with Spanish-made balms. Sunning yourself by the rooftop pool, you can eye all of the Old Town — but there’s more at play here than just a central address to make you feel you’ve struck right at the heart of the island and its storied capital.
