All-embracing: the most romantic hotel rooms in the UK

The luxury hotels, from London to Scotland and beyond, with love-story-inspiring rooms

With so many stretches of achingly beautiful scenery, lively cities and charming coastal corners to choose from, finding the most romantic hotel rooms in the UK is almost as consuming as the search for ‘the one’. But, with our pick of hideouts for loved-up twosomes, from Edinburgh to the Yorkshire Dales to the Somerset wilds, there’s no need to fire up the apps.

We’ve handpicked the most seductive rooms, suites and more unique accommodations from some seriously romantic luxury hotels across the UK for Valentine’s Day breaks, landmark anniversaries or just a chance to reconnect somewhere swoonsome.

The Roseate Suite at The Roseate Edinburgh

Scotland

Gabled and grand, The Roseate Edinburgh’s Victorian building wins at first impressions. It’s set a short walk from the city centre and the bijou whisky bar within is as warming as the — more than 100 — single malts on offer there. But the Roseate Suite will give you an even headier buzz, with its rich velvets, heritage tweeds and the freestanding copper bath tub by a bay window overlooking the Pentland Hills.

Why we love it so

– Suite bookings get a bottle of Joseph Perrier Champagne as a Smith Extra
– Haggis, black pudding and tattie scones for a full-Scottish breakfast in bed
– Peaceful west-side setting

The Dairy Hot Tub Room at Middleton Lodge Estate

North Yorkshire

The cream of Middleton Lodge Estate’s elegant rustic rooms sit in an outbuilding that was once home to dairy cows and butterchurns, but now whip up excitement with their two-person hot tubs (some alfresco) and flower-edged terraces. Interiors are wood- or brick-lined, with antiques and bucolic flourishes like barn doors or beams — somewhere you could happily stay till the cows come home.

Why we love it so

– Indoor-outdoor feel
– Close to the estate’s glamorous Georgian-Palladian mansion
– Acres of grounds to frolic in

A Biggest Plus Double Room at The Harper

Norfolk

The Harper’s flinty industrial buildings are now tailored to another kind of getting busy. Couples can ensconce themselves in contemporary cool suites close to the North Norfolk coast, (an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), which are kitted out with four-poster beds, seating areas for two and large bathrooms. The Biggest Plus are stylish sanctuaries, with windows facing the sunset to top off scenic days of seal-spotting, ‘gillying’ missions and wandering windswept beaches.

Why we love it so

– Pre-mixed cocktails in the minibar
– Fire-pit-side wine-tasting sessions in the hotel courtyard
– Games room for some friendly competition

A Large Room at The Penny Bun

Yorkshire Dales

The Penny Bun (named after a mushroom that grows nearby) might appear to be a traditional coaching inn, but within there’s a chic, clean Spartan-ness to the decor, nearing Nordic minimalism. It’s all part of the inn’s head-clearing powers, ditching tech in rooms to ensure you focus only on each other — and properly resting up — whether you’re sharing the freestanding bath tub, sighing over moorland views or are tangled up together in soft linen bedding.

Why we love it so

– Eco-friendly ethos
– Thoughtful touches: homemade flapjacks, handpicked flowers and natural incense
– Superlative locally sourced comfort food

The Muckle Hoose at Beadnell Towers & Kitchen

Northumberland

You might not seek them out in a partner, but stony, wooden characteristics are mightily appealing in a hotel room — case in point, Beadnell Towers‘ Muckle Hoose (Northumbrian for ‘great house’), a beamed and wood-floored heritage room with antique masonry. A bespoke chandelier casts a romantic glow, lights are dimmable and the shower is big enough for a duo or even trio; but, better still, twin bath tubs mean no squashed-together soaks.

Why we love it so

– Homemade shortbread and chocolate on arrival
– Wellies to borrow for long arm-in-arm walks
– On request, staff can leave champagne in-room or scatter petals in the bath

A Hive at Wildhive Callow Hall

Peak District

Ideal as a sweet-as-honey stay for nature-lovers (after all, an apiary is a short stroll away), the treehouse-like Hives at Wildhive Callow Hall appear to float amid the forest canopy. Each has a terrace for breakfasts and sundowners as birds and butterflies flutter past, cabin-style interiors, a mini kitchen and all home comforts, including a soft king-size bed.

Why we love it so

– Toasting marshmallows over a fire pit in the hotel grounds
– Scrumping in the orchards
– After-dark nature walks

The Daniel & Elizabeth Suite at Grove of Narberth

Pembrokeshire

Confirming its status as one of the most romantic hotel rooms in Wales, Grove of Narberth’s Daniel & Elizabeth Suite was inspired by a scandalous love story between Daniel Poyer, who built the manor house and walled garden in the 17th century, and his maid. Save housekeeping the extra work and let history repeat itself in fantasy only, dalliance-ing away in the freestanding bath tub or four-poster bed set by an antique fireplace.

Why we love it so

– Quirky collection of Welsh ‘love spoons’ on display, plus local pottery and lace
– Leafy views of the Preseli Hills
– Free minibar to raid

A Bell Tent at Tillingham

Sussex

If you like your luxury low-key, find summer loving in natural-wine estate Tillingham’s seasonal Bell Tents (available to book from May to September). They’re set in wildflower-strewn fields, where glampers may spy the resident Hungarian pigs roaming, but will experience few other interruptions. Each has a fairy-light-strung terrace with a fire pit for stargazing; and within are rugs, plants, fluffy throws and a small stove for a bohemian back-to-nature feel.

Why we love it so

– Homegrown biodynamic wines on tap
– Charming farmyard encounters
– Haute dining with an eco ethos

The Barn Suite at Artist Residence

Oxfordshire

We’re not sure why barns feel quite so amorous, but they’ve proven to help create some of the most romantic hotel rooms in the UK. The Artist Residence Oxfordshire’s is a cut above your average conversion, hung with dynamic modern artwork, sporting a bathroom tiled in scatter-gun green hues and a showpiece four-poster woven out of stripped tree limbs. Add the original hayloft door and a small terrace, and it’s a fairytale in the making for city escapees.

Why we love it so

– Secluded from the main house
– Wood-burning stove for cosier nights
– Lively and laidback pub just steps away

A Boathouse Large Room with River View at Oakley Court

Windsor

Oakley Court is bedecked with many a Gothic tower and turret, but the rooms in the nearby Boathouse will win you over with their River Thames views and modernist styling. Bedrooms are in muted natural hues and bathrooms in marble, plus there’s a sitting area and some have a four-poster. They’re close enough for exploring the mini Soho House and seasonal Stonehenge-shaped bouncy castle on-site, but are peaceful and private too.

Why we love it so

– Guests’ choice vinyl from the library in the bar
– Tennis courts and winter ice-rink to play on depending on the time of year
– Mini waterside marquees for summer socialising

The Duke of Monmouth Suite at Hazlitt’s

London

Monmouth House — home to the rebellious illegitimate son of Charles II — no longer stands in Soho Square; but this two-storey tribute suite at Hazlitt’s is a magnificent enough abode for wannabe royalty. There’s a wildly proportioned antique bed, water spills into the bath from the beak of an eagle statue and there’s an actual throne in your toilette. But its inner-city terrace with stag statue and retractable glass roof is the ultimate status symbol.

Why we love it so

– Heart-of-London location
– Having a blast in the past
– Working fireplace for extra cosiness

The Secret Garden Suite at The Pig in the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds

Beloved beast of a hotel brand The Pig has conquered the Cotswolds with its tasty mix of garden-fresh style and lived-in luxe. There are silk-purse-from-a-sow’s-ear miracles throughout, but the Secret Garden Suite epitomises why couples come back for more. A petite green space and hot-tub-topped terrace, handcarved and antique furnishings, and freestanding bath tub will have you squealing with joy.

Why we love it so

– Direct access to iconic horticulturalist Rosemary Verey’s Arts and Crafts gardens
– Decadent, hyper-local, kitchen-garden dining
– Cocktails with house fixings in the cosy Village Pub on-site

A Wildflower with Terrace at Cowley Manor Experimental

The Cotswolds

The Experimental hospitality group (of Parisian cocktail bar fame) lives up to its name at English countryside retreat Cowley Manor Experimental. It might be the picture of 19th-century stateliness from the outside, but within, designer Dorothée Meilichzon uses saturated hues, chunky silhouettes and dazzling patterns to make a dramatic ‘po-mo’ look. The Waterlily with Terrace room tempers this bold take with gracious garden views.

Why we love it so

– Side-by-side sunloungers and a deep-soaking bath tub
– Down-the-rabbit-hole, Wonderland-inspired design
– Decadent DJ nights and madcap cocktails

The Rooftop at Babington House

Somerset

Is the Rooftop room at Babington House the hotel’s largest? No. Will tall people need to watch their head? Yes. Is there a more romantic hotel room in Somerset? We doubt it. Perhaps it’s the storied, garrett-like feel to an attic space or the characterful wood beams; but it’s definitely the huge tin bath tub placed alfresco on the terrace, from which you can people-watch and celeb-spot from on high, or skinny dip with no-one being any the wiser.

Why we love it so

– Private, historic penthouse feel
– Minibar with full cocktail-making kit
– Far-reaching views across the estate

Lear’s Loft at The Zetter Marylebone

London

Laid out over the top two floors of The Zetter Marylebone, Lear’s Loft feels like a pocket-sized palace, with its sumptuous silk and velvet fainting couches, frescoed ceiling dome and part-canopied bed. And occupants will feel even more privileged having two deep soaking tubs to choose from: one marble-topped indoors, the other out on a small terrace, privy to views but just out of sight of the neighbours.

Why we love it so

– A regal feel to room service
– Cosy drinks parlour downstairs, with a board-game-style cocktail menu
– Set just steps from Marylebone Village
