Our favourite rooms

Go for a one-bedroom pool suite – each has a spacious living area and a private terrace with a plunge pool, alfresco lounge area and hanging basket chair. If you’ve little Smiths in tow, go for one of the three- or four-person family rooms – the former has a sofa bed, the latter a set of wooden bunks.

Poolside

There’s a large unheated pool outside with panoramic views of the old town, coastline and glittering sea. Slate-grey sunloungers run around the outside, and there’s a row of daybeds set beneath cane and black-timber cabanas.

Packing tips

Bring your full lineup of swimming gear – most of the action takes place around the pool.

Hotel restaurant

The restaurant is styled with the hotel’s signature mod-Mykonian minimalism, featuring whitewashed walls, a polished concrete floor and a scattering of timber tables and black-wire chairs. The chefs have forged strong relationships with local producers, ensuring some of the best Aegean seafood, meat and vegetables make their way onto the menu, which has a Greco-Meditternean lean. Take a seat on the poolside terrace and order the classic Greek salad, made with the freshest greens for miles around.

Hotel bar

The bar is by the pool, serving cooling cocktails and soundtracked by soft Balearic beats. If you’re stuck for choice, try the sparkling rosé sangria, served with lashings of seasonal fruit.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 8am to 11am; lunch from noon to 6pm; dinner from 6pm to 11pm. The poolside bar serves all day from 10am to 11pm.

Planes

Mykonos International Airport can be reached directly from London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Manchester Airport; the frequency of flights increases significantly in the summer season. It’s a 15-minute drive from the airport – the hotel can arrange a one-way transfer for two for €35.

Automobiles

Taxis are plentiful on Mykonos, but it’s useful to have your own set of wheels so you can explore the island at your leisure. There’s open-air parking at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

Considering it’s a 25-minute walk from the heart of the Old Town, the hotel is the perfect base for anyone who wants to make the most of the town’s galleries, boutiques, restaurants and bars. That said, the pool area is sufficiently covetable that you’ll likely find yourself hurrying back for an afternoon dip, sampling cocktails from one of the cabana-shaded day-beds.

Known for its stone-paved streets and azure-blue shutters, Hora looks a little bit like a toy town, such is the uniformity of its whitewashed houses and the brightness of their painted balconies. Its narrow, winding streets are home to a wealth of boutiques, cafés and restaurants (both low-key and ritzy) that lend themselves to leisurely lunches and drawn-out dinners. For a hit of contemporary culture, stop off at Rarity Gallery, an elegant exhibition space given over to contemporary art. It’s compact but the collection is wide-ranging, showcasing the work of established and emerging artists alike. For something much older, visit the Church of Panagia Paraportiani, parts of which date from the 14th century. The building’s unusual shape is explained by the fact that it’s actually five different churches: four are dedicated to saints, with the final, dome-like structure built to honour the Virgin Mary. From there, stroll up to the town’s famous 16th-century windmills, some of which have been converted into museums or private homes. Boni’s windmill crests the hill, and lays claim to some of the best sunset views anywhere on the island. For a change of scene, book a tasting at Mykonos Vioma Organic Farm, an old monastery vineyard producing organic and biodynamic wines from classic Aegean grape varieties.

Local restaurants

For a traditional dinner, book a table at Kounelas Traditional Tavern, a pint-sized taverna renowned for its seafood – try one of the platters, most of which are sized for sharing. The stylish set will often be found on the tree-studded terrace at Kalita, where the lamb is a firm favourite, and Ling Ling, an open-air Cantonese eatery from the team behind Hakkkasan.

Local bars

Castle Panigirakis commands some of the finest views of any building on the island, and has an alfresco cocktail bar to make the most of the sunset. One of the island’s most sought-after beach clubs, Scorpios is a bar, restaurant, artists’ community and bazaar all rolled into one. Loungers, day-beds and tables are all in hot demand here, so be sure to book ahead. If you’re up after midnight, try late-night hotspots Queen and Astra.

Until recently, you only really had two options if you wanted a stylish stay on Mykonos. The first? Bite the bullet and pay an eye-watering rate at one of the island’s most famous hotels. Or, second, book an apartment and forgo luxuries like a restaurant, cocktail bar and poolside service. The good news is that times are changing, and a third option has arrived in the shape of My Mykonos Hotel. Like many of its pricier contemporaries, this budget-boutique hotel has a beachy, bohemian-leaning look that borrows from the island’s whitewashed houses. Inside, things are kept simple with stripped wood, rattan furnishings and fabrics in pale slate and deep charcoal. Some rooms have their own private plunge pools and alfresco lounges, but the curving main pool is just as enticing, and gets buzzy in the afternoon and evening, when guests gather for sundowners before settling in to drawn-out dinners beneath the stars. And if you’d rather dine out, you can be on the cobbled streets of the old town in ten minutes, where you’ll find everything from rustic tavernas to gleaming cocktail bars fit for minigarchs.
