We love the cosy corner nook of the Junior Suite, perfect for curling up into with a book, plus the bonus of a furnished balcony if you want to take your reading outside — though the views are likely to distract.

Spa

The hotel’s wellness area (open from 2pm till 8pm) offers a series of seductively low-lit spaces to aid any aching muscles after a day on the slopes or trails. There’s a roomy sauna, relaxation room (with numerous tea options) and a range of massage and body treatments on offer, many of which use natural minerals and clay from the surrounding mountains. There’s also a small gym with free weights, cardio machines, and an open space for stretching.

Hotel restaurant

Aptly named Altitude 1.511m has lofty ambitions to establish itself as one of the resort’s top dining spots — and it’s going about it the right way with triple Michelin-star chef Jacob Jan Boerma at the helm. A pared-down lunchtime menu spotlights fresh local produce with easy-going dishes like zhuzhed-up Italian toasties and wild-mushroom ravioli. For dinner, Jacob flexes his culinary chops with the likes of delicate seabass carpaccio and richly caramelised beer-braised guinea fowl. A cushioned banquette runs the length of the symmetrical restaurant area, creating a convivial dining space which opens directly onto the kitchen so you can watch the magic happen. 

Hotel bar

The bar swaps alpine clichés for understated cool, with dark timber, brushed brass and warm lighting setting the tone. Perch on a bar-front stool or settle into a design-icon chair and choose between a collection of local wines, beer made with Dolomites spring water, and various spritzers.

Last orders

Breakfast is 7am–10.30am; lunch is 12.30pm–2.30pm; dinner is 7pm–10pm, and the bar opens from 11am until midnight.

Casa Cook Madonna is set in the centre of Madonna di Campiglio, an alpine resort in northern Italy's Brenta Dolomites.

Planes

The nearest place to fly into is Bolzano Airport, around two hours away by car, although connections are limited. Verona’s Valerio Catullo Airport is a bit farther, at two and a half hours, but with flights from most major European cities. The hotel can arrange minibus airport transfers from both.

Trains

The nearest mainline railway station is in Trento, a spectacular one-and-a-half-hour journey away by car. There’s a direct bus to the station, too, which takes about two hours.

Automobiles

Being a short stroll from ski lifts and with an abundance of local shuttle buses, you certainly won’t need a car to get around the resort. Consider bringing your own wheels if you plan on exploring the wider Dolomites. There’s limited parking at the hotel, so be sure to reserve in advance.

Worth getting out of bed for

Although one of the Dolomites’ more under-the-radar resorts, the Madonna di Campiglio ski area goes boot-to-boot with the best, with 150 kilometres of piste, four snowboard parks, and oodles of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing paths. The hotel is also just a few minutes from the closest gondola, so you can be carving down the slopes in no time. 

As the seasons change, the surrounding Adamello Brenta Nature Park opens up to equally invigorating pursuits like forest hiking, mountain biking and wild swimming in sky-reflecting glacier lakes. You can organise a range of outdoor activities at the hotel reception, including horse-trekking trips, morning group runs and river kayaking, or if you’re feeling particularly brave, sign up for a tandem paragliding flight. Afterwards, you can calm your nerves with a wine-tasting tour around some of the region’s vineyards — the Filanda de Boron winery is particularly well-known for its wonderfully crisp natural mountain wines.

Local restaurants

Reflecting the resort’s strong gastronomy game, and remarkable for its size, Madonna di Campiglio boasts an impressive tally of three Michelin-starred restaurants. If we had to choose one it would be Stube Hermitage, with its knotty wood-clad walls, intimate atmos and tasting menus that showcase Trentino produce from both mountain and sea. More wood-panelling but less fussy, Ristorante Antico Focolare is a local favourite for its hearty regional fare that includes venison stew and summer truffle risotto. 

Local cafés

For colourful house-made pastries, artisan ice cream and Italian coffee, San Carlo Café is a long-established go-to set in the centre of town. 

Local bars

If there’s no time for winery tours, Enoteca 54 is a top spot in town for sampling the region’s vinos — each comes paired with a smorgasbord of Italian delicacies as an added bonus. Up the ante and hit Après-Ski Ober 1 after dark for thumping DJ sessions, craft beers and creative cocktails, all under a huge teardrop-shaped glass roof.

Mountain stays can often be all about antlers, gingham and carved pine, but adults-only Casa Cook Madonna has other ideas. This all-seasons retreat brings the brand's signature pared-back earthy aesthetic to Madonna di Campiglio, where Bauhaus-inspired leather seating, sculptural lighting and a palette of warm timber and polished stone replace alpine clichés. 
Multi-Michelin-starred chef Jacob Jan Boerma sets the bar higher still with refined flavours that are rooted in Trentino produce and dished on the restaurant's terrace against glorious views of the surrounding peaks.
