Basking below the picturesque Alpe di Siusi in the village of Ortisei, Gardena Grödnerhof Hotel & Spa has something of a mighty reputation itself. Its all-seasons appeal, from easy ski lift access to flower-frilled trails, has been tempting families and couples to this Arcadian corner of the Dolomites for over a century. Our favourite rooms

The interiors at Gardena Grödnerhof Hotel & Spa mirror its surroundings, with rustic oak-wood panelling, valley-framing balconies and nature-nodding palettes as standard. If it’s mountain scenes you're after, Superior I watches over the Sella massif from its dual-aspect windows. Connected to the main building through an underground tunnel, Chalet Suites add seclusion and space to their summit-peering views, and the Seceda Suite features a fireplace for a warming close to days on the slopes.

Poolside

With a wellness centre so focused on the restorative nature of water, it’s only fitting that the indoor heated pool (open 7am to 8pm) anchors this soothing space. A flanking fireplace adds to its elemental appeal, and relaxation areas with sofas ensure kicking back comes easy. If you’d rather sit and soak, the outdoor steam bath is embraced by mesmerising mountain views.

Spa

The sprawling Gardena Spa was designed with the famed Latin phrase ‘mens sana in corpore sano’ (a sound mind in a sound body) at its forefront — an ethos still embodied today in its array of water-based offerings. Across an impressive three floors, you’ll find everything from Finnish and bio saunas, aromatic steam baths, cold plunges and whirlpools to floating pods and infrared beds. But its nine treatment rooms are where the meditative magic takes place, with a menu of Ayurvedic massages that will restore balance to the body’s three doshas. Ladies, you're in luck: there’s a second, female-only spa that features another steam bath and bio sauna.

Packing tips

An appreciation for craftsmanship: your surrounding village of Ortisei is famed for its wood carvings — a centuries-old trade still embraced today.

Also

There’s a fully equipped fitness area with qualified instructors hosting a rotating roster of water and gentle gymnastics; stretching, relaxation and yoga classes, and introductory gym sessions.

Pet‐friendly

Certified service dogs are the only animals allowed at Gardena Grödnerhof. See more pet-friendly hotels in South Tyrol.

Children of all ages are very welcome at Gardena Grödnerhof Hotel & Spa.

Best for

Over-threes are best catered to at Gardena Grödnerhof.

Recommended rooms

Extra beds and cots can be added to all but the Comfort rooms. The Superior I and all Chalet Suites each tout two bedrooms, and connecting options are available on request.

Crèche

Engaging and fully certified programmes are on offer at the on-site kids’ club, open from 3pm to 11pm, six days a week, for children aged three and over. The space is kitted out with arts and crafts corners, dollhouses, play kitchens and sleep areas. On request, accredited staff can also assist with dinner at a dedicated childrens’ table. Older kids have their own devoted activity area, too, with a climbing wall, table tennis and football, a Formula One simulator and indoor cinema.

Activities

Your mountainous surroundings are almost as well-equipped for families as the hotel itself. There’s a pick of private ski schools if little Smiths haven’t quite nailed the basics, short all-ages hikes and easy access to the region’s sledging and toboggan runs.

Swimming pool

Children are allowed at the spa’s indoor pool during school holidays, but otherwise it’s reserved for adults.

Meals

Anna Stuben’s Michelin-starred tasting menus aren’t exactly tailored to tots, but Gardena Restaurant and La 4 Sajons can provide plates for younger palettes.

Babysitting

Certified childminders can be brought in on request, with advance notice and for an additional charge.

Top Table

Scoring one of Anna Stuben’s coveted 12 seats is something of an award in itself, so be sure to book ahead.

Dress Code

Straight from the slopes suits Gardena and your finest threads are better for Anna Stuben. Evenings at La 4 Sajons sit somewhere in the middle.

Hotel restaurant

A triplet of revered restaurants means going hungry would be something of a feat around here: Gardena Restaurant is your relaxed, sunup-to-sundown base with a soul-warming menu of hearty Italian favourites for lunch and dinner, changing daily depending on what mountain-made produce has been delivered that morning. For breakfast, you’ll find a buffet of freshly baked loaves and pastries, yoghurts and cheeses, as well as à la carte options and a juicing station with a selection of fresh fruit.

La 4 Sajons and Anna Stuben are your dinner-only options. Alpine themes define the former, with knotted oak interiors, grilled-to-perfection plates and creamy fondues filling its cosseting space. The latter’s name may suggest a laidback setting (stube means ‘lounge’ in German), but this intimate 12-seat restaurant is the most formal of the three, courtesy of its Michelin star, refined tasting menu and sommelier-selected wine pairings.

Hotel bar

Each of the three restaurants has its own bar menus for plate-pairing sips, and Anna Stuben’s wine offerings — a rather biblical selection — are brought up from the in-house cellar. Should you prefer a spot devoted to drinks, you’ll be happiest at the Lounge Bar with its roaring fire, live music and revered cocktail list.

Last orders

Breakfast at Gardena is 7.30am to 11am, and lunch is from 12.15pm until 4pm. Dinner is dished between 7pm and 9pm at all three restaurants, and the Lounge Bar is open 10am to 1am.

Room service

Drinks can be delivered around the clock, and food is available from 7.30am until 10.30pm.

Italy

Embraced by manicured gardens and backed by the Sella massif, Gardena Grödnerhof Hotel & Spa sits steps from the centre of Ortisei — a quaint South Tyrolean village in Northern Italy.

Planes

Bolzano Airport is a 45- to 60-minute drive away from the hotel and your nearest international option. Innsbruck is two hours away by road, and if you’re touching down in Venice, Verona or Munich, the drive is closer to three or four hours. Private transfers can be arranged from all five airports for an additional charge.

Trains

The hotel's closest train station is a 30-minute drive away in Bolzano, where highspeed routes run to European hubs such as Milan, Rome, Verona, Venice, Munich and Innsbruck.

Automobiles

A car isn’t essential as Ortisei’s centre and ski lifts are all within walking distance of the hotel, and well-run bus routes connect you to Val Gardena’s other villages, Santa Cristina and Selva. If you are bringing your wheels, there’s a private carpark on-site.

Worth getting out of bed for

Naturally, Gardena Grödnerhof’s striking Dolomiti backdrop makes for the perfect playground. During the winter, easy proximity to the Superski’s 750 miles of World Cup-hosting runs ensures schussing for all abilities (one pass gets you access to all 12 of its valleys). Alpe di Siusi is a worthy alternative for cross-country skiers and snowshoers, with lifts up to its summit a few minutes’ walk from the hotel’s front door. And to the north, Seceda attracts top talent for its scenic Gröden and Sella Ronda ski circuits.

As the weather warms and snowy summits give way to spring’s wildflowers, hiking and biking trails braid surrounding mountains and guided e-bike excursions showcase the Sella massif’s picturesque landscapes at their sunniest. Golfers can tee off at 18-hole St Vigil Seis at the base of Sciliar, while amblers do little more than rotate between boutiques and quaint cafés in Ortisei

Local restaurants

With a trio of restaurants on-site, you're unlikely to dine outside of the resort.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this mountain resort in the Dolomites and unpacked their wood-carved crafts and Ladin textiles, a full account of their bucolic break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Gardena Grödnerhof Hotel & Spa in South Tyrol…

Defined by its storied ski circuits and picture-perfect summers, the Dolomites know what it’s like to spend time in the spotlight. But alongside a recent influx of openings, Gardena Grödnerhof Hotel & Spa has been quietly commanding its Ortisei-set stage for more than a century.

Once a family home, this is a resort that sticks to its roots. The kitted-out kids’ club comes with enough frills to keep all ages entertained, while a sprawling, multi-floor spa ensures parents are just as pampered. Steam baths, private balconies and alpine interiors are striking support acts to your mountainous surroundings; and at three well-loved restaurants, comforting, award-winning classics with the region’s finest produce are your headliners.

Your lofty locale is no understudy either. Easy proximity to the Seceda and Alpe di Siusi cableways means days are spent carving scenic trails (whether that’s with ski or hiking boots depends on the season) and remembering there’s space for more than one star...
