Style

Reinvented classic

Setting

Red-carpet Dolomites

The oldest hotel in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Ancora Cortina’s recent revival by owner Renzo Russo and Charles & Co has put it firmly back in the centre of the resort’s glamorous scene. With its overhauled alpine looks, peak-wrapped terrace restaurant and spoiling new spa, it has enough film-set flair to match its location in the home of not one but two Winter Olympics. A basement club adds an extra hedonistic touch.

In rooms: Sky TV, Marshall Bluetooth speakers, climate control, Illy coffee machine, tea-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, GHD hairdryer and straighteners, bathrobes, slippers and custom bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Premium Room 507, with its enveloping beamed ceiling, is the pick for stargazers — the night sky above the massifs is best viewed through its roof window. If you’re staying a while, curl up in front of the fireplace in one of Ancora Cortina’s Grand Suites for an authentically alpine experience. And if you’re bringing the family, the Ancora Suite is an impressive space with a fully equipped kitchen and expansive views from its huge terrace.

Poolside

There’s no pool at Ancora Cortina but the spa houses a huge Jacuzzi with mesmerising mountain vistas.

Spa

The brand new spa may be dinky — it can host just eight at a time — but it punches above its weight. The sauna, steam bath, Jacuzzi and two experience showers are all clad in calming creamy marble. The light-filled relaxation suite and cryotherapy area are balm for ski-weary muscles. And products from French-Japanese experts Evidens de Beauté enrich the selection of wellness rituals and treatments anchored in the spa’s alpine surroundings. A fitness studio is kitted out with Technogym equipment, and yoga sessions and personal training can be arranged, on request.

Packing tips

Sunglasses (designer, naturally) earn their keep, countering both the snowy glare from the Dolomites and the after-effects of late nights in the hotel's Club Brave.

Also

The hotel’s restoration has been masterminded by owner Renzo Russo, who also owns fashion houses Marni, Jil Sander and Maison Margiela. You can pick up their pieces to take home from the hotel boutique.

Pet‐friendly

Well-behaved dogs are welcome at Ancora Cortina and must be leashed in communal areas. For a nightly fee of €55, your pup will get a bed (two sizes available), bowl, treats and a supply of waste bags. See more pet-friendly hotels in Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Children

Welcome, although not especially catered to. The Ancora Suite sleeps four, and a baby cot can be added to any room (free of charge in the Executive and Prestige suites).

Sustainability efforts

Ancora Cortina’s restaurant sources ingredients from small local producers to reduce food miles and waste. Energy and water-saving measures, as well as minimal engagement with single-use items, have helped the hotel achieve the LEED certification for sustainability.

Top Table

Grab a terrace table for an après-ski aperitif; its fireplace and underfloor heating mean you can marvel at the mountains all year round. Or choose a bar stool in the restaurant to subtly spy on the top-notch chefs at work.

Hotel restaurant

La Veranda is a light-filled dining room where an all-day menu spotlights reinventions of alpine classics. Breakfast, served under its wooden ceiling and impressive chandeliers, is an international affair — you can just as easily get avocado toast as you can a local pastry. Il Ristorante, Ancora Cortina’s fine dining wing, is an intimate space for sampling a tasting menu that changes with the seasons, but always showcases local produce and twists on the region’s culinary traditions.

Hotel bar

The hotel bar, just off the lobby, is the place to perch until midnight, with the grand piano tinkling in your ears and in an impossibly long-stemmed glass in hand. Mountain-inspired cocktails feature local spirits and botanicals. The grappa-based ‘Alpine Breath’ and ‘Strudel By The Glass’ are standout picks. Then there’s Club Brave, the speakeasy-style club tucked downstairs that's open on scheduled dates (or on request): leave your phone at the door — no selfies allowed — and luxuriate in shadowy velvet-lined corners, enjoying DJ sets and a heavy-hitting back bar.

Last orders

La Veranda and terrace are open from 7am to 10.30pm. Il Ristorante is open for dinner from 7pm to 10.30pm. The bar is open from 7am till midnight, and Club Brave is open on specific dates or upon request.

Room service

In-room dining is available 24 hours a day.

Worth getting out of bed for

It might be tempting to spend every hour soaking in the spa Jacuzzi or sipping grappa beside the lounge’s fireplace, but no one comes to the Dolomites to stay indoors all day. Lucky, then, that Ancora Cortina is metres from the Funivia Faloria cable car that’ll swoop you up to the top of the resort for skiing or snowboarding on its 120 kilometres of runs; the hotel team can arrange kit hire and lessons. In summer, you can hire bikes to explore, or hike to dramatic beauty spots such as the Cascate di Fanes waterfalls. Back at Ancora Cortina, the hotel can arrange cookery classes as well as wine tastings, flower arranging and candle making workshops.

Local restaurants

Park up on a pine-clad bench at Ristorante de Len for all-day dining with modern flair. If you can’t choose from the menu of fresh local dishes, pick the ‘I Quadri Del De Len’ for a taste of four chef-chosen dishes in one. The Michelin-starred Ristorante Tivoli, helmed by Graziano Prest, is a magnet for well-heeled visitors eager for a taste of elevated Tyrolean produce.

Local cafés

On an agriturismo in the hills outside Cortina, you’ll find El Brite de Larieto, the more rustic sister of Michelin-starred mountainside haunt SanBrite. Gnocchi, pork and gelato from the on-site dairy farm are all dished in a dining room that’s straight out of alpine central casting, timber-clad walls and antler chandelier included.

Local bars

Take the cable car up to the Lagazuoi Terrace bar, where you can drink in the view alongside Aperol spritzes. For après at a lower altitude, Molo Pub bills itself as ‘the last pub in town’. With staples like burgers, craft beers and table football, it lives up to its own hype, amping up the atmosphere after dark with an accomplished cocktail list.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this storied boutique hotel in the Dolomites and uncorked their grappa, a full account of their alpine break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Ancora Cortina in Cortina d’Ampezzo…

The fire in Ancora Cortina’s wood-panelled lobby strikes a tantalisingly traditional note as you step across the threshold of this icon of Dolimiti hospitality. Once inside, you’re swept away by the hotel’s glittering makeover – a fitting glow-up for an area that’s played host to 007 and two Winter Olympics. The new decor by Charles & Co is all jewel-box velvet and marble, but incorporates the original dark wood panelling and cosy alpine bed nooks.

After sampling the spa — a contemporary pocket of pampering where one hour’s daily use is included with your stay — cocktail hour on the terrace beckons, with chiselled peaks as your backdrop. Sustenance is served in the form of reimagined alpine plates at Ancora’s fine dining restaurant, with a side of open-kitchen theatre. Later, head down the sultry pink corridor to Club Brave – a bijou, speakeasy-style nightspot, where a shimmering mirrored bar and low-lit velvet booths deliver the glitziest of aprés-the-aprés-ski venues.
