At the hotel

Vineyard, rose garden, bikes to borrow, charged laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: air-conditioning, free bottled water, bathrobes and slippers, and Diptyque bath products; the apartment and Deluxe rooms also have coffee-making kit.

Our favourite rooms

The hotel’s Swedish sisters and owners, Marie and Annica, know a thing or two about design: they both work in fashion and Annica’s professional photography adorns the villa’s walls. Their Scandi-style interiors are certainly easy on the eye, but your considerate hosts understand that your attention might fall more to the views of vineyards and countryside, and so every room has its own balcony or terrace. The cream of the crop is the Deluxe rooms: Room 17 has east and west-facing views; room 18 is the hotel’s highest stay with a spacious private terrace for relishing the all-angles vistas. The Village Apartment is in the heart of Monastero Bormida, a short walk or drive from the villa, plus you'll still get access to the whole hotel.

Poolside

Scale the stone steps to get your greens in at the turquoise-tiled pool: it’s flanked by forest-hued sunloungers and sits among the verdant Barbera-growing vineyard. And when you’re done notching up leisurely laps, a basil-and-cream striped bar — which matches the retro pool rings dotting the water — pours house wine and a selection of cocktails.

Spa

There’s no spa, but Ayurvedic massages and rejuvenating facials can be booked at the terrace-toting treatment room.

Packing tips

Some milk thistle might help refresh you in between wine tastings and aperitivo, plus a pocket-size notebook is handy for jotting down your favourite vintages at the former.

Also

At Villa La Madonna, you can top and tail your day, toasting the sun: with salutations in the yoga studio as it rises, and with artfully prepped cocktails towards sunset at the daily aperitivo hour.

Children

Welcome. Extra beds can be added to Superior and Deluxe rooms for an additional charge, and babysitting can be arranged on request.

Sustainability efforts

This countryside retreat eschews single-use plastics.

Food and Drink

Top Table

You’ll want to bag a table by the picture windows, but you’ll have to be punctual as it’s first come, first served.

Dress Code

The owners work in fashion, so no pressure… But you’ll look the part in oversized shades, flowing fabrics and a spritz in hand, of course.

Hotel restaurant

Food, tradition and family are integral parts of Italian culture — a trinity that’s celebrated at Villa La Madonna’s restaurant. Its setting is wrapped by floor-to-ceiling windows that gaze out to the Bormida Valley and the hotel’s vineyards; tables also spill out onto the leafy piazza. Piedmontese classics — vitello tonnato, veal-stuffed ravioli, wild mushroom taglioni — are highlighted on the menu, but you’ll also find soul-warming national favourites such as aubergine parmigiana. The region is famed for its slow-food concept, and chef Valerica Borcea takes this in her stride with her respect for traditional cooking methods.

Hotel bar

There are two outdoor bars kitted out in pine-green and cream stripes; you’ll find one by the pool, and the other in the piazza, overlooking a small garden. Toast to your day at aperitivo hour, which is either held alfresco or in the third bar, which sits indoors under vaulted, stone ceilings. It’s a particularly romantic spot for a nightcap, with its velvet sofas, fresh flowers and flickering candles. As well as classic cocktails, the hotel’s wine cellar stocks an impressive line-up of Piedmont-grown blends.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 8am to 10.30am; lunch is served from 12.30pm to 2.30pm; aperitivo hour is at 6.30pm, and for dinner, it’s 7.30pm until 11pm.

Room service

Dishes from the restaurant’s menu can be delivered to your door during regular kitchen hours on request.

Worth getting out of bed for

The pocket of Piedmont where you’ll find Villa La Madonna is a pastoral canvas of slow-food producers, ancient towns and verdant vineyards. The region has plenty of culinary claims to fame, which you can sample at tastings: head to small cheesemakers for creamy robiola and gorgonzola; sniff out Alba’s autumn truffle market, and pair your (white) tuber magnatum with a glass of Barolo in the Unesco-protect wine-growing town. The estate’s farmer, Vittorio, can pick you up on his tractor and take you to small-scale wineries to buy from the barrel.

Work up an appetite for these regional delicacies with morning yoga, by borrowing one of the hotel’s bikes or horse-riding through the bucolic landscape. There are also nearby walking trails and staff can arrange post-hike picnics. Roman town Acqui Terme is a short drive away, and the hotel can book private tours to other regional hotspots, such as the Ligurian coastline’s Cinque Terre.

Local restaurants

Classic Piedmontese cuisine is showcased at family-run Il Giardinetto, where you can expect to find fresh pasta, hearty stews and local cheeses. Love is in the air at cosy and creative Ristorante Angolo Divino: share heart-shaped tartares alongside a bottle of rosso from the cellar.

Local cafés

You’ll find plenty of local cafés in nearby towns: sip espressos at Bar da Zia Robi in Bistagno, or Caffé Verba Volant in Monastero Bormida.

Local bars

Aperitivo at Enoteca La Curia comes in the form of regional wines; you can buy your favourite vintage in their bottle shop, too.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this vineyard-wrapped hotel in northern Italy and unpacked their bottles of Barbaresco and chocolate truffles, a full account of their bucolic break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Villa La Madonna in Piedmont…

Villa La Madonna is a greenery-swathed bolthole in the heart of Piedmont’s countryside. It’s an epicurean’s dream destination, thanks to a culinary output that features native white truffles, Barolo and Barbaresco wines, and (a sweet footnote) Ferrero Rocher. At the villa, the regional restaurant follows the seasons: asparagus and morel mushrooms are picked in April; the verdant landscape begins to blush as July sunshine ripens its tomato and peach crops; and September marks the start of grape harvesting.

Though the colours of its locale change with the calendar, Villa La Madonna is an all-seasons classic. A sense of year-round conviviality flows from the hotel’s garden-facing piazza and sociable pool area, bolstered by the hotel’s daily ritual of aperitivo, and a choice of activities that immerse you in the local community.

But if your social battery begins to run low, you can recharge with a massage at the vine-clad treatment room, retreat to the thousands-strong wine cellar, or withdraw to your balcony to admire those prime Piedmontese views…
