Our favourite rooms

You’ll feel the calming presence of ancient trees wherever you rest your head at Le Cattedrali, but the Garden Suites edge you even closer to Monferrato’s wilderness. We love the open-plan layout and glass-box feel of the Loft, with its soaring ceilings, sculpted marble sinks, and egg-shaped soaking tub which sits between the bed and forest-framing windows.

Poolside

Jutting out from the wellness area onto an immaculately kept lawn, the outdoor saltwater pool is all sharp angles and sleek lines. The lounger-lined deck catches the sun for most of the day, and is in prime position to watch the treeline turn golden at sunset.

Spa

Hot, steamy, and lightly scented with aromatic oils and herbs from the forest it overlooks, Le Cattedrali’s vitarium rolls the healing powers of a wood-fired sauna, hammam, ice waterfall and sensory shower into one. There are two spa cabins for massages, facials, and beauty treatments, and instructors on standby for yoga classes and tailored workouts.

Packing tips

Bring your most discerning nose for wine tasting and truffle hunting, as well as suitable footwear for woodland walks.

Also

Creatives of all kinds are welcome to apply for the hotel’s artist residency programme, which has hosted some well-known musicians, painters, and writers including Swiss-English sculptor, David Tremlett.

Children

This wine-and-dine escape welcomes children, but has more of a grown-up culinary focus. Little Smiths are charged as adults.

Sustainability efforts

Acres upon acres of woodland stretch out in all directions from Le Cattedrali, which does its bit to preserve the surrounding Valleandona Nature Reserve by running off renewable energy, supporting reforestation projects, and keeping food miles to a minimum (as in, directly from the kitchen garden or close farming neighbours).

Hotel restaurant

With a glittering Michelin-starred career and regular appearances on MasterChef Italia, Antonino Cannavacciuolo is a star chef in varied ways. His celebrated, artful blend of Piedmontese flavours and Campanian recipes from his childhood has already won many hearts across the shores of Sorrento to Lake Orta, and can be enjoyed in various four- and five-course tasting menus in the elegant dining room at Cannavacciuolo Le Cattedrali. Resident chef Gianluca Renzi shifts ingredients in tune with the seasons, preparing nature-peppered plates like sea-urchin fusilli, wild game-stuffed cappellacci, and wood pigeon topped with black garlic and snowflakes from Nebbiolo’s vineyards. Wine pairings are handpicked by an experienced team of sommeliers from the hotel’s vast cellar, which stocks over 2,000 labels from Piedmont and beyond. The experience is rounded out by an impressive cheese trolley, laden with artisan wheels from local dairy farms. There’s a more casual offering in the Bistrot, which mostly caters for leisurely alfresco lunches and poolside snacks.

Hotel bar

The Lounge Bar’s selection of spritzes alone is enough to make your dinner reservation a little later, and really lean into the art of aperitivo. Hugo spritzes (zesty concoctions of mint, prosecco and elderflower) clink across the courtyard just before sundown, coupled with the light fizz of Negronis Sbagliati making the rounds. Of course, there’s always the wine cellar to dip into throughout the day too — with an entire section dedicated to organic labels from small, local suppliers.

Last orders

Lunch is from 12.30pm to 2pm, and dinner from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Room service

Dishes from the à la carte menu can be brought to your room during kitchen hours.

Address
Le Cattedrali Relais by Laqua Collection
Fraz. Valleandona n. 1/B
Asti
14100
Italy

Cresting a hilltop in the rolling countryside of Asti, Le Cattedrali sits at the heart of Piedmont’s wine-producing Monferrato region.

Planes

Turin-Caselle Airport is a 40-minute drive from the hotel, and Milan Malpensa is 90 minutes by road (with more international connections). Le Cattedrali can assist with airport transfers for an extra cost.

Trains

Trenitalia, Frecciabianca, and InterCity trains connect nearby Asti (a 20-minute drive from the hotel) with Italian hubs like Turin, Milan and Genoa.

Automobiles

We’d normally discourage sorting some wheels for such abundant vineyard territory (designated drivers are therefore a must), but much of Monferrato, Langhe and Roero makes for incredibly scenic road-tripping. There’s private parking and a free valet service at the hotel.

Other

Ask the hotel for its helipad co-ordinates ahead of your stay.

Worth getting out of bed for

The Unesco-protected valleys of Langhe, Monferrato and Roero abound with hilltop castles, mediaeval villages, and vineyards known the world over for bottles of Barolo and Barbaresco. Wine tastings and food tours allow you to indulge in the land’s natural larder, such as rich hazelnuts, perfectly sweet peaches, delicate veal, farm-fresh cheeses and prized truffles while drinking in the majestic scenery as you go. If you’re visiting between October and early December, the region’s pretty capital plays host to the annual Alba White Truffle Fair, which celebrates Piedmont’s white gold through cooking demonstrations, pasta workshops, and folkloric displays across the castle. On Le Cattedrali’s doorstep, the Valleandona Nature Reserve, Valle Botto and Val Grande are criss-crossed with hiking and biking trails which take you through wildlife-filled woodland and meadows.

Local restaurants

Straying far from Le Cattedrali might not sound so appetising once you’ve sampled just a single dish from Cannavacciuolo’s kitchen, but Madama Vigna (between nearby Asti and Turin) draws a local crowd for its authentic agnolotti and homemade tiramisu.

Local bars

Assetati stocks some excellent local wines (with 100 by-the-glass options) if you somehow manage to drink the hotel’s cellar dry.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this woodland-wrapped hotel in Piedmont and unpacked their bottles of Barolo and precious white truffles, a full account of their grape escape will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Le Cattedrali Relais by Laqua Collection in Italy…

Generous helpings of the good life are yours to be savoured at Le Cattedrali Relais by Laqua Collection, an adults-only retreat sandwiched between Monferrato’s truffle-rich forests and grape-laden vines. Listed as an area of outstanding natural beauty, this hilly slice of southern Piedmont is as prized for its red wines and rare truffles as it is for outdoor adventures. It’s a land of perfect pairings, especially for those planning on spending most of the sojourn at chef (and TV personality) Antonino Cannavacciuolo’s dinner table, before attempting to hike or bike it all off along sun-dappled forest trails. This is by no means a requirement, though — and the hotel’s wood-fired sauna, tree-hugged pool, garden-abutting suites, and ever-evolving art gallery each offer calming spaces to settle the mind (as much as the stomach).
