Sneak in some midnight constellation-spotting from the comfort of your covers in a Stargazer tent – each has its own skylight above the bed. Need some extra space? Spring for a Suite tent (with an ‘adjacent hive’ if you have tots in tow).

All ages are welcome. Camping cots can be arranged for little Smiths and tents with ‘adjacent hives’ give families space to stretch out.

Top Table

In warm weather, snap up seats in the covered alfresco dining area and soak in the view. On colder days, snuggle up inside by the heaters.

Dress Code

Keep it cosy in your camp booties, recycled fleece jumpers and well-worn plaid.

Hotel restaurant

Canteen-style restaurant Embers is under a large tent at the heart of the camp. For dinner, dishes range from barbecue-smoked chicken and pulled-pork tacos to pan-roasted trout with seasonal veggies. In the morning, choose from hearty breakfast burritos, cinnamon-topped French toast, fortifying coffee and other all-American favourites.

Hotel bar

Quench your post-hike thirst with a locally brewed craft beer or glass of crisp rosé in the restaurant tent. Chilly out? Warm up with a mug of hot chocolate or a flask of tea or coffee.

Last orders

The scent of strong coffee will start wafting from the restaurant tent at 7am (breakfast is served until 10am); dinner’s dished out every night from 5pm to 10pm.

Room service

Order a picnic lunch before 10pm the previous day for pick-up in the morning. Chunky club sandwiches and grilled-veggie wraps will keep you going on your day’s adventures – each boxed lunch comes with fruit, crisps and house-made trail mix, too.

Address
Under Canvas Grand Canyon
979 Airpark Lane
Valle
86046
United States

This luxury camp is a 25-minute drive from the South Rim entrance of Grand Canyon National Park and just outside Valle, Arizona.

Planes

Regional commuter flights land at Grand Canyon National Park Airport – 30 minutes by car from the hotel – but the closest international hub, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, is three and a half hours away by car.

Automobiles

Phoenix is the nearest major city; the drive will take about three hours, depending on traffic. Turn off the main road onto a single-lane track, pass the heli-port, then hold on for the bumpy half-mile final stretch.

Worth getting out of bed for

We suspect a certain main attraction is high up your to-see list, but in your down time you can partake in camp activities. Under Canvas Grand Canyon hosts free group classes (oil painting and the like) and every night guests gather around the fire-pit to make s’mores and swap stories. Private guided hikes, helicopter tours and horse-riding can be arranged on request (for an extra cost), too.

Your luxury camp is only 20 miles from the Grand Canyon Village (South Rim) Visitor Center, an ideal spot to meet the canyon for the first time. Spend a day hiking the trails – Bright Angel Trail and South Rim Trail are both jaw-droppingly scenic. Want to avoid the crowds? Set out early enough and you may get the Grand View hiking trail all to yourself, particularly in the quieter months. This long, steep and spectacular trail goes all the way down to the river (so be prepared for the climb back up).

Local restaurants

There aren’t any neighbours of the culinary sort here; your best bet is to mosey on over to the mess tent for meals.
