Whimsical Alpine

Setting

Gondola-gazing village perch

Fir-trimmed chalet architecture gives Relais & Châteaux’s Hôtel Saint-Georges in Megève an air of Alpine tradition. Step into its chintz-dosed interiors, however — merry with nostalgic murals, playful patterns and Noel-nodding hues — and you’ll see this is a boutique stay brimming with character as well as class. Plus, a refined French bistro, piano bar and wellness space bring the substance to this mountain hotel’s significant style.

Our favourite rooms

This colourful corner of Megève is a match for maximalists, blending Alpine tropes (flashes of red and green, honeyed-pine panelling) with English whimsy courtesy of Christopher Moore textiles, patterned valances and statement headboards. Bag a Deluxe Room for a little more space to unpack your Spyder co-ords and breathe the fresh mountain air from your balcony or terrace. For families, both the Deluxe Room Mezzanine and Duplex Suite sleep four in a split-level layout.

Spa

Take trail-weary limbs and pinked-by-the-piste complexions for a reviving treat at Hôtel Saint-Georges' wellness area. A duo of treatment rooms is primed for dishing MyBlend body massages, facials, light therapies and holistic combos. Continue your strength work in the modest fitness centre, or put your muscles through their hydrotherapy paces with contrasting spells between the Japanese sauna, Jacuzzi and cold plunge.

Packing tips

Outdoor gear with label cachet is the MO of wider Megève and the way to go at Hôtel Saint-Georges, too: just don’t try to compete with the hotel’s penchant for pattern — block colour or neutrals will help you avoid a clash.

Also

Luke Edward Hall’s interior design incorporates bits of Blighty that are sure to soothe any homesick Brits: piano bar carpet inspired by traditional Welsh blankets, and acorn- and oak-adorned fabrics by Christopher Moore.

Pet‐friendly

Dogs are welcome in any room at Hôtel Saint-Georges; for a nightly charge of €25, Fido will be greeted with a treat and given a dog bed. See more pet-friendly hotels in Megève.

Children

Welcome; under-12s are charged as children. Some suites sleep four, as does one room. Babysitting can be arranged for an extra charge with notice, and a games room with arcade games provides indoor entertainment.

Sustainability efforts

Water- and energy-saving measures are in place at Hôtel Saint-Georges and linens and towels are changed every three days to reduce the environmental impact of the hotel's housekeeping.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Window-side in Le Trappeur for village comings-and-goings; fireside in the Piano Bar.

Dress Code

Mountain-ready threads by day; natural knits and textural layers, suede or leather to bring a soupçon of sartorial flair to supper.

Hotel restaurant

Dressed like a fashion-conscious Alpinist in chunky woods and leaf-green checks, Le Trappeur is the hotel’s dining spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Chef Jérôme Blanchetiere oversees creative takes on seasonal Savoyard cuisine in a menu that celebrates the classics: expect an emphasis on cheese and cured meats, put foie gras on your bingo card, and lean into the joy of sharing a baked Mont d’Or with potatoes and salad for an authentic Alpine supper. Breakfasts feature a buffet of hot and cold dishes, both sweet and savoury.

Hotel bar

The timbered, scarlet-seated Piano Bar is the kind of inviting cosy lounge that makes your heart sing: low-lit and fire-warmed; crafting concoctions that nod to its locale (try the namesake génépi-laced cocktail), and accompanying digestifs with a line-up of pianists tinkling the ivories on weekend evenings. A modest menu of small plates, featuring charcuterie and cheese, allows you to graze without decamping to the restaurant for dinner.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 7.30am to 10.30am; lunch hours are noon to 1.30pm; for dinner, it’s 7pm to 9.30pm. The Piano Bar opens nightly from 5pm until 1am.

Room service

You can order from a dedicated menu of bites around the clock.

Megève

France

In the centre of Megève, at the end of a pedestrianised street, Hôtel Saint-Georges is a short walk from the Le Chamois gondola and nearby Rochebrune cable car.

Planes

Geneva is the nearest international airport, 90 minutes away by road; for Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport arrivals, it's closer to two hours by car. Private transfers from either airport can be arranged by the hotel on request and for an additional charge.

Trains

A 20-minute drive from the hotel, Sallanches is the nearest alighting point if you're arriving by train. International rail routes can take you to Albertville, an hour’s drive from Hôtel Saint-Georges. For both arrival points, staff can arrange private transfers on request (fees apply).

Automobiles

There’s a covered garage close to the hotel and valet parking is available from €40 a day, although Megève’s consummate welcome means you’ll have little need to venture beyond the village unless by cable car or hiking up a hill.

Other

Megève Altiport is the nearest option for private charters and helicopter transfers.

Worth getting out of bed for

Your well placed launchpad at Hôtel Saint-Georges allows laidback wanders around Megève’s designer stores, village square and upscale cafés and bars. And Le Chamois gondola is only steps away, taking you to the pistes of the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area, which links Megève with Les Contamines-Montjoie and Saint-Gervais (although the Rochebrune cable car, a 10-minute walk away, is your faster option). Where skiing and snowboarding beckon in winter, the snowmelt that follows opens up hiking and mountain biking trails in summer. Saint-Gervais-Les-Bains is a pretty spa town dotted with cafés and pâtisseries that offers a change of scene at any time of year. For eagle’s-eye views of Megève and sunrise over Mont Blanc, arrange a hot-air balloon ride.

Local restaurants

In a listed building on Place de l’Eglise, chef Emmanual Renaut oversees a menu of regional plates at Le Prieuré that showcase this Alpine spot’s bountiful larder, with regional cheeses, foraged mushrooms and herbs, and lake-caught perch. Terrace tables alone warrant the short drive to peak-patrolled Le Refuge – Megève, where your reward is trad Alpine dishes devoured in a charmingly rustic, timbered dining room (if not outdoors). Linger over polished Savoyard fare in an atmospheric chalet dining room at La Taverne du Mont d’Arbois

Local cafés

Near the Rochebrune cable car on the mountain, L’Alpette is our pick for mid-morning cafés au lait on a breathtakingly panoramic terrace. Pick up coffees and cookies to go from Le River Family House.

Local bars

At the heart of the village, Le Meige is a cocktail bar by night, café by day, and at all times offers an accompanying menu of bites and sharing plates.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this chic chalet hotel in the French Alps and unpacked their raclette and génépi, a full account of their mountain break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hôtel Saint-Georges in Megève…

An inn since Megève’s evolution from farm-fringed village to aristo-patrolled ski resort in the 1920s, Hôtel Saint-Georges has plenty to feel nostalgic about. Traditional chalet architecture, edged by wood-carved balconies and echoed in timber-clad rooms and suites, sets the storied scene. Seasonal Savoyard dining at Le Trappeur is rooted firmly in regional traditions. The hotel’s location — which makes most of the village reachable on foot and puts you steps from Le Chamois ski lift — also points to its OG status.

Look a little more closely, however, and you’ll see that this historic hotel is all set for its 21st-century incarnation. Interiors have been given fashion-forward flounce by Luke Edward Hall, with sculptural furnishings and whimsical use of pattern. A Japanese sauna, state-of-the-art gym and cutting-edge MyBlend spa treatments lend a contemporary lens to wellness. And a fire-warmed piano bar, which invites low-key lounging and live-music-accompanied soirées, hits all the right notes.
