At the hotel

Public beach, 12-acre garden, fitness center, concierge and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV with Netflix, air-conditioning, ceiling fan, minibar, tea- and coffee-making kit, free bottled water, umbrella, yoga mat, clothes steamer and La Bottega bath products.

Our favourite rooms

When on Eleuthera, it feels only fitting to stay as close to the sand as possible; and here, that means settling in the Beachfront Cottage, with easy access to the water and its own hammock-graced garden. Even in the Garden Suites, that airy island breeze reaches the coral-pink accents and soaring ceilings.

Poolside

Where a towering white spire protrudes between the palms sits the resort’s central, crescent-curved pool, bordered by sun-soaked loungers and steps from the mojito-serving Sand Bar. You’ll also find a second outdoor pool alongside the Fig Tree restaurant (both are open between 7am and 7pm); and if you’ve bagged yourself the Pineapple House, you’ll have your own space to swim in.

Spa

Tschendra is the name of your healing host at the Natura Bissé-backed Acqua Spa, and she comes with a revered repertoire of holistic and Ayurvedic techniques to her name. You can take treatments in the spa’s nature-swathed massage room, on the beach or in your suite; but wherever you decide to destress, Tschendra will suggest a treatment based on your mood — if you need to slow down, it’ll be laced with lavender, and for low-energy days, expect zesty citrus boosts. There’s also a fully equipped gym, as well as a terrace for yoga and Pilates classes.

Packing tips

A penchant for writing: word on the street is that Paul McCartney penned the lyrics to Oh! Darling here on hotel-supplied stationery.

Also

There’s more than pretty palms to admire around the resort's winding paths; wander its maze and you’ll find an open-air hut with murals from Bahamian architect Ray Nathaniels, originally painted in the 1950s and preserved during restorations.

Children

Welcome; there’s no kids’ club, but babysitting can be arranged with 48 hours’ notice for $20 an hour, and family-friendly activities can be organized by the concierge team.

Sustainability efforts

When the hotel’s owners stumbled across the estate in 2016, it was coated in a thicket of foliage; and though it’s since been stripped back, they have been careful to put the land’s conservation at the forefront of design and day-to-day operations. Inside, everything runs sustainably, from energy-efficient appliances to recycling and food composting — even the plastic is upcycled into reusable materials. The restaurant uses locally sourced and sustainable ingredients, and part of the hotel’s profits are reinvested into the island’s communities through training programs and conservation projects.

Top Table

Bag a beachfront seat, or ask staff to set up a private on-the-sands supper if you’d rather something more romantic.

Dress Code

There's no formality here, but something hand-stitched and bespoke will suit the ethos of this craft-celebrating space.

Hotel restaurant

Named for the ancient banyan that shades this beachfront restaurant's alfresco space, the Fig Tree is a well-loved ode to local suppliers. Breezy interiors are filled with hand-crocheted lamps and crafted textiles from Eleuthera’s artisans; and produce is delivered each morning by island-based farmers and fishers. Dishes will differ depending on the crop, but fresh-as-can-be fare with Bahamian and international influences are your year-round guarantee.

Hotel bar

Take up residence under the lofty spire of the Sand Bar’s pavilion, or ask deft barkeeps to shake up your cocktail poolside for sips between dips.

Last orders

Breakfast is served between 7am and 10am; lunch is from noon to 3pm, and dinner is dished from 6pm till 10pm. The bar stays open until the last guest decides to pack up their dancing shoes.

Room service

Available from a separate menu.

Address
The Potlatch Club
Old Banks Road Governor’s Harbour
Eleuthera
Bahamas

The Potlatch Club sits on a 12-acre beachfront estate along the eastern shoreline of Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas.

Planes

Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Nassau are the only airports with direct flights to the island’s Governor’s Harbour Airport, so you’ll have to catch your connection from one of the three. Once you’ve landed, staff can arrange $40 one-way transfers for the 15-minute drive to the hotel.

Automobiles

A car isn't essential, but if you're planning on exploring Eleuthera’s secluded corners, a set of wheels will come in handy. There’s free parking a few steps from the hotel, and staff are happy to help bring luggage over.

Other

Private sea plane charters can be arranged for archipelago island-hopping.

Worth getting out of bed for

A wisp of land in the ocean, Eleuthera’s elongated shape puts miles of Atlantic-lapped shoreline on your doorstep. And with a dedicated concierge on call, exploring its expanse comes particularly easily; whether that’s with a sandy-toed wander, or afternoon on the water is up to you. If you're leaning towards the latter, paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkeling, and sailing are particularly picturesque ways to see the island’s surrounding coral reefs

The Leon Levy Native Plant Reserve is a short walk from Potlatch and has 30 acres of flower-laced gardens to roam. It’s also host to the native milky weed, used by locals for its healing properties for over five centuries. For those who’d rather their cultural teachings come courtesy of admiring traditional architecture and ambling between family-owned boutiques, Governor’s Harbour is less than a 10-minute drive away.

Local restaurants

Fish-focused menus are hand-written each morning with chalk and a blackboard at Tippy’s Restaurant and Beachside Bar, where a sandy, alfresco setting and convivial atmosphere have been luring locals for more than 20 years. And at family-run Buccaneer Club, Caribbean cuisine comes bolstered with Asian influences (we’re talking beer-battered shrimp, conch fritters and jerk chicken-topped fried rice).

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this storied stay in the Eleuthera and reviewed their holiday snaps, a full account of their beachfront break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Potlatch Club in the Bahamas…

The story behind The Potlatch Club seems fabled, yet it’s rooted entirely in fact. Childhood friends Bruce Loshusan and Hans Febles were roaming Eleuthera’s eastern shoreline when they noticed a clutch of dilapidated buildings, overrun with thickets and soaring palm trees.

After doing some digging, they discovered the estate had started its life as a pineapple plantation, before New York’s socialites turned it into a retreat during the 1960s, drawing the likes of Greta Garbo and the McCartneys.

Today — after seven years of renovations — its crowd is a little more low-key, but its essence is every bit as enticing. Standalone cottages are your cosseting base, and an indoor-outdoor restaurant puts the island’s talented producers in the spotlight. There’s a duo of pools to pootle between, a soothing spa and a concierge team on call for your every desire. Whether that means a sunset picnic or a private yacht charter, you’re set to be feeling like those Sixties stars in no time.
