Planes
The hotel is around a two-hour drive from JFK. Alternatively, flights from Boston, Charleston, Orlando and more touch down at Long Island MacArthur Airport. From there, it’s under an hour’s drive to the hotel.
Trains
The Long Island Rail Road will take you from Penn Station or Grand Central Station to Hampton Bays, with a change at Jamaica for the Montauk branch. It’s under 10 minutes’ drive from Hampton Bays station to the hotel.
Automobiles
The Penny Lane has bikes to borrow and Ubers are easily summoned, so you won’t be scuppered without a car here. If you do bring your own wheels, there’s free parking at the hotel.
Other
If you’re coming by boat, the hotel has a few docks available to book on Penny Pond, the waterway that the garden backs onto.
Worth getting out of bed for
Crisscrossed by peaceful waterways and hemmed on one side by Shinnecock Bay, Hampton Bays is best explored by bike or boat. Head out on a cycle (the hotel has bikes to borrow) to get acquainted with the area, charting canalside paths, leafy trails and coastal routes. When the ocean calls, cross the bridge to Ponquogue Beach, a wide, golden-sand stretch with surf-friendly waves. This neck of the woods has a rich nautical heritage, and fishing charters and boat tours are always on the cards, but there’s plenty to occupy landlubbers, too. The Parrish Art Museum in Southampton explores the rich history of East Coast artist colonies, and when it’s wine tasting o’clock, wend your way to the Wölffer Estate, a family-owned vineyard focused on community and sustainability.
Local restaurants
A festoon-lit restaurant set right on the water, Cowfish is an atmospheric spot for polished seafood and steak. Old-school Italian-American joint Francesca's is beloved by locals for its crisp-based pizzas and homemade ice cream. For an alfresco dinner right on Shinnecock Bay, bag a table on the pontoon at Dockers Waterside — the truffle butter lobster roll takes some beating, as do the sunset views.
Local cafés
Kickstart sleepy mornings with a stroll down to Hampton Coffee Company, where you can pick up craft espresso, breakfast sandwiches and pastries. Over on Shinnecock Canal, pair a lemony lobster roll with a citrus spritz on the open-air deck at Canal Café.
Local bars
A stroll away at the end of the canal, the Station Bar is a relaxed hangout that draws a devoted local crowd for oysters and cocktails on the water.
