Our favourite rooms

Montauk Yacht Club’s bedrooms bring pops of nautical navy to whitewashed coastal interiors. Soak up uninterrupted views of the water from the sea-breeze-kissed balcony in a Beachfront King room, which also flaunts easy access to the hotel’s private beach. For a taste of tradition, hunker down in a Historic Cottage King: they’re set in cookie-cutter cottages that overlook the Great Lawn and its family-friendly pool.

Poolside

Moor up at the adults-only Ocean Club pool, where harbor-gazing sunloungers double as front-row seats for yacht watching. Tuck into light bites and refreshing spritzes from the poolside bar, and live music soundtracks dips on the weekend. The greenery-framed Great Lawn pool, which is set near the historic cottages and padel courts, caters to families with its little-Smith-friendly set-up and activities.

Spa

The hotel’s wellness space, the Cabana, opens in May 2025 and will partner with La Prairie Spa to create a bespoke menu of holistic therapies. Two waterfront treatment rooms will be the setting for caviar eye lifts, botanical body wraps and rejuvenating facials; you'll also be able to luxuriate in couples’ and in-room massages.

Dress Code

Nautical and nice — loose linens, plentiful stripes and floppy sun hats fit the bill.

Hotel restaurant

Menus at Ocean Club Montauk are steered by Long Island-sourced produce and just-caught seafood — served with a side of expansive water-ogling views. South African chef Jarad McCarroll pays homage to his homeland’s braai tradition with open-fire cooking — pick from a menu of local ingredients, such as branzino, wagyu strip or sweet potatoes, to go on the grill. You’ll find homemade pasta, wood-fired pizza and American seaside classics — we’re going for the lobster roll — alongside freshly shucked oysters. Breakfast is just as indulgent with eggs royale and bacon-topped french toast, which are balanced out with detox juices and gluten-free options. Pop by the carefully curated market for on-the-go coffees, picnic snacks and groceries from Montauk-based brands.

Hotel bar

Ocean Club’s bar pours sommelier-picked wines and signature tipples, which pair well with aperitivo bites. It’s a picturesque setting for a sundowner, and after 10pm, it’s for over-25s only. The casual pool bar shakes up a selection of refreshing cocktails, including a house spritz.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 8.30am to 11am.

Worth getting out of bed for

Set sail for wholesome nostalgia with a raft of outdoor pursuits to choose from at Montauk Yacht Club. You can perfect your backhand on the padel courts; go for leisurely waterfront cycles on a borrowed bike, or take a cruise through the harbor on one of the hotel’s electric boats. Top up your tan on the club’s private beach or take out a paddleboard to get a closer peek at the rigged-for-pleasure yachts moored just off shore.

Beyond the resort, the halcyon Hamptons beckon. Head for windswept hikes in seafront Shamoor State Park, or ride the waves off Ditch Plains Beach with East End Surf Club. Staff can arrange fishing day trips or catamaran charters, plus thrill-seeking watersports such as wakeboarding. Saddle up for horseback riding along the shore with Deep Hollow Ranch, before toasting to your day at Wölffer Estate with a candlelit cider or wine tasting.

Local restaurants

Scenery-framing picture windows at slick Maverick’s Montauk overlook Fort Pond, but seasonal fare such as seafood platters and local wagyu beef will soon recapture your attention. There’s a sense of whimsy at Rooted: flickering candles and fresh flowers decorate the bright space, and Mediterranean-inspired plates are just as marvel-worthy. Bag a top-floor table for oh-so-blue views at laidback Inlet Seafood, which specializes in sushi and jumbo shrimp cocktail.

Local cafés

At Left Hand Coffee, both hands will be kept busy: one will hold a fresh cuppa brewed with Montauk Coffee Company beans, the other might clutch a buttery pastry. Brush shoulders with free-spirited surfers at Joni’s, where fruit-topped breakfast bowls, organic lunch offerings and freshly squeezed juices are as colorful as the setting.

Local bars

Wine bar Sel Rrose brings Manhattan to Montauk, with its Aperol spritz towers and sparkling natural wines, and just like the city that never sleeps, it stays open until the early hours. At Montauk Brewing Company’s twee taproom, you can sample fruity ales and light lagers on their sociable terrace.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this harbor-set hotel in Montauk and unpacked their floppy sunhats and boat shoes, a full account of their East Coast break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Montauk Yacht Club in the Hamptons…

Hamptons stalwart Montauk Yacht Club was first opened as a social club by Carl Fisher in 1928, welcoming out-of-towners such as JP Morgan and aviator Charles Lindbergh, who once famously landed his seaplane on neighboring Lake Montauk.

A century on, the modernised space retains its magnetic pull and dramatic arrivals take place in the hotel’s yacht-envy-inducing marina. Sturdy sea legs come in handy at this nautical-nodding resort: showcase a sense of balance in a yoga session or on a paddleboard; and flaunt your sailing-strong limbs in a round of padel.

There’s an appreciation for the active, but relaxation is held in equal esteem. Spa cabanas soothe with decadent caviar treatments; settle into family time at the Great Lawn pool, or slip into a siesta on the secluded beach. But true to its private club pedigree, the Ocean Club is where the real fun happens, plus you never know who might make a stage-worthy entrance...
