Our favourite rooms

Stockton Inn’s notable legacy has made it a convivial hub for singers, writers and, now, foodies. But the buzz of story-telling chatter subsides in its soft-hued rooms and private spaces, which soothe with exposed stonework and local artwork. Room One, a Deluxe Room, is spacious and bright, and has a shared balcony, bouclé chaise lounge and his-and-hers sinks. Room Seven, a Deluxe Room with Fireplace and Soaking Tub, has all the frills for a cozy sojourn: vaulted ceilings, a freestanding bath tub, a gas fireplace and semi-private patio with a fire pit.

Staff know the best therapists in town for a massage and can arrange one in your room on request. For more active pursuits, the hotel offers private mixology classes, complimentary bicycles for exploring and off-roading adventures on historic Jeep tours.

Pet‐friendly

Welcome, but this epicurean retreat is better suited to grown-ups. There’s a double sofa-bed in the Junior Suite with Living Room, which can be made up on request; free baby cots can be added to all rooms except Room 5.

Hotel restaurant

Like a good date, your hosts at Stockton Inn will wine and dine you. Stockton Inn Restaurant is a relaxed space for dinners with a menu that changes seasonally. Though you’ll want to save room for as much of this menu as possible, we don’t advise holding out till evening; the hotel’s Stockton Market lies just across the street and supplies breakfast brews and snacks, plus healthy all-day dishes. 

Hotel bar

When it comes to drinks at Stockton Inn, the (figurative) bar is high: Brian Miller is a big name in the bartending world, and is stirring up new and lost-to-time creations throughout the Tavern, Terrace and Dining Room. The Jack Rose is a modern version of a cocktail that dates back a century; at the Inn, it’s now laced with apple brandy, framboise liqueur and Domaine de Montreuil calvados. You’ll also find a list of around-the-world wines and spirits, plus close-to-home craft ales.

Last orders

Neighbouring sister property, Stockton Market, is open from 8am to 7pm, and Stockton Inn Restaurant dishes dinner from 5pm till 9pm, Wednesday to Sunday. The bar opens at 4.30pm.

Centuries-old Stockton Inn resides in its quaint, namesake town on the banks of the Delaware River, along New Jersey’s verdant border with Pennsylvania.

Planes

Trenton-Mercer Airport is a 25-minute drive from Stockton; Pennsylvania’s Philadelphia International Airport and New York City’s Newark Liberty are each an hour away by road.

Automobiles

You’ll want your own set of wheels for taking in the region’s picturesque towns and hiking trails, plus NYC is under a 90-minute drive away. There’s free parking with electric-vehicle charging points at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

You’ll be encouraged to embrace a slower pace of life at Stockton Inn. If you’re an out-of-towner from New York City or Philadelphia (each under a 90-minute drive away) who’s struggling to shift gears, toss a coin into the historic wishing well and ask fate to intervene. Pootle around petite Stockton, or head to riverside neighbors Frenchtown and New Hope to mooch in charming boutiques and cafés. A long, leafy towpath runs along the Delaware River, an idyllic route for rambles, cycles or horse rides. After an active day, you might like something to take the edge off: check the hotel’s calendar for cocktail-making masterclasses with the Brian Miller.

Local restaurants

Finnbar is the kind of restaurant that you might see on social media and immediately add to your restaurant wishlist. We have at least, for its Italian-inspired dishes of pillowy focaccia, homemade pasta and ice-cool martinis. True to its name, Tavola Rustica is a rustic-luxe local spot for burrata boards and generously topped pizzas (just save some room for the traditional olive oil cake). The mosaic-like ceiling at Under the Moon Cafe is just as eye-catching as the brunch offerings and tapas towers, and any munchies are cured with its late-night weekend menu.

Local cafés

The Inn’s sister café-slash-shop, Stockton Market, is just across the street, serving energy-boosting coffees, buttery pastries and seasonal all-day bites. Perfect Day Cafe will set yours up similarly with its give-you-a-buzz brews and tempting sweet treats.

Local bars

Swoop by low-key Odd Bird Brewing for a velvety stout or fruity ale. The Salt House is a long-standing tavern that shakes up punchy cocktails and pours local pints.

There’s plenty to pique your interest at Stockton Inn — its history-rich roots and town-dotted riverside setting are just the start. Originally built in 1710, the inn and its accompanying carriage houses have since lived several lives: a prohibition-era speakeasy, various hotels and restaurants, the musical inspiration for a track covered by Ella Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett… But its current form is set to stick, especially with contemporary-yet-cozy interiors, bright art-filled bedrooms, and two top dining spots.
