Our favourite rooms

All suites come with their own private balconies for view-dappled downtime, so your pick will depend on whether you’d rather be looking out over the fragrant gardens, across to the Old Quarter or at the gold-studded statues of Phou Si Temple. If you’re staying awhile and prefer a little extra space to play with, the Phou Vao Garden Suite is the most sprawling with a separate living and dining area.

Poolside

Anchoring the hotel’s courtyard and sculpted into the hillside, the 13-metre freshwater infinity pool lulls between preserved archways, tropical flowers and a sun-soaked line-up of cushy loungers that overlook the water and its enthralling Phou Si backdrop.

Spa

Ancient techniques form the healing foundation of the Mekong Spa — an award-winning space where lemongrass scents linger from tropical surroundings and traditional Lao therapies are performed with locally sourced botanicals and homemade scrubs. Alongside its trio of open-air treatment rooms, you’ll also find a steam room, a cold plunge and foot bath.

Sustainability efforts

Respect for surroundings runs deep at La Résidence Phou Vao, where a sustainably crafted façade immixes with its hillside perch and interiors are all handcrafted by Lao artisans. Top Table

Elevate the intimacy and ask staff to set-up a private dinner in the gardens, alight with flickering lanterns and clear constellations.

Dress Code

Loose fitting cotton and linens will work best with the hillside breeze up here.

Hotel restaurant

Tam Nan Restaurant keeps local culture close, with teakwood interiors and a menu that showcases customary Lao classics. Each dish is prepared with sustainably sourced ingredients, slow cooked in clay ovens, steamed in bamboo baskets or blended with the region’s taled tam method — and served against dramatic views of Mount Phou Si.

Hotel bar

The beauty of a tuk tuk bar is that it moves wherever you may wander: have your cocktails shaken poolside, poured in the tropical gardens, or savoured on your private balcony. There’s also a bar in the main restaurant, where equally spirited sips are served alongside meals.

Last orders

Breakfast is served 7am to 10.30am; lunch is noon to 4pm, and dinner is dished between 6pm and 10pm. The bar opens from 11am until 11pm.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this hilltop hotel in Laos and unpacked their culture-immersed experiences, a full account of their divine break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang…

Resting atop its eponymous peak, La Résidence Phou Vao pays homage to its heritage, beginning with its name. Quite literally translating to ‘Hill of Kites’, this lofty perch above Luang Prabang was where Lao royalty spent their summers racing sails through the breeze.

Now, their former base has been transformed by a descendent of the deities himself. Sanya Souvanna Phouma has brought his intimate knowledge of the region’s culture into each space: dressing suites in handcrafted tapestries and teakwood, soundtracking transfers to old Ramayana recordings, rooting spa treatments in ancient healing methods, and meals in clay-cooked flavours.

He’s even assembled a top-notch team to tailor itineraries to your taste, meaning your only move is deciding whether your days are spent hiking in pursuit of waterfall finales and taking part in sacred ceremonies, or basking by the infinity-edge pool with no more than a rice whiskey to sip and a temple-touting view to salute.
