Finca with flair

Setting

Simple-life Sencelles

Hotel Son Xotano is a beacon of blue in Mallorca’s rural corazón. It's bucolic, but this boutique hotel still brings a hint of the coast to its jasmine-scented grounds: aquamarine shutters and striped sunloungers adorn this revamped farmhouse, along with intricate murals, suites with terraces and plant-framed corners. Palma and turquoise-water coves are a short drive away, but morning yoga, poolside siestas and oh-so-local dining make this retreat beam all the brighter.

Our favourite rooms

There are no TVs or sound systems in rooms at Hotel Son Xotano, but at this romantic retreat, we’re sure you’ll find ways of entertaining yourselves. The Junior Suite with Terrace is set for seduction with its grounds-surveying terrace, archway-framed bed and living-room-like bathroom, which has twin sinks, an ikat-printed ottoman, a double rainfall shower and freestanding bath tub.

Poolside

Blue is the theme throughout, particularly so at the outdoor pool, where made-for-two cabanas and day-beds are dressed in duck-egg –and-cream stripes, and line the terrace and dot the lawn. Jasmine bushes and pomegranate trees create a fruity perfume, and a pool bar serves up spritzes and snacks in between saltwater dips.

Food and Drink

Top Table

You'll mainly dine alfresco, and the set-back tables for two are framed by a pergola of plants and make for idyllic sunset-to-dusk grazing.

Dress Code

Oversized shades and floppy hats for surreptitious people-watching by the pool; smarten up for dinner with linen shirts or espadrille wedges.

Hotel restaurant

Chef Isabel Omar takes inspiration from the hotel’s vibrant-and-verdant grounds, lush with olive, pomegranate and cypress trees, for her polished Balearic plates. The restaurant adopts a zero-kilometre ethos when it comes to suppliers, and the Mallorcan-style turbot with puréed tumbet encapsulates Isabel’s modern approach to traditional dining. Just save room for the brûléed ensaimada, which has a sugar shell that crackles on your tastebuds alongside a refreshing orange sorbet.

Breakfast takes place overlooking the pool — you’ll find a buffet of hyper-local produce inside, and can order à la carte dishes, such as an açai bowl or pan con tomate, from your table.

Hotel bar

You’re likely to be found sipping cocktails by the pool or enjoying your apéritifs on one of the sink-into-me sofas that are dotted across the grounds — overlooking the lawn, by the fountain, or on your terrace.

Last orders

Breakfast is served between 8am and 11am; lunch is from 1pm to 3pm, and for dinner, it’s 7pm to 9.30pm. You can order drinks and snacks by the pool from 11am to 7pm.

Room service

You can order dishes from a dedicated menu between 8am and 11pm.

Hotel Son Xotano is set amid peaceful countryside outside of Sencelles in Mallorca, but it’s within easy reach of the island’s beaches, towns and hiking trails.

Planes

Palma’s international airport is under 30 minutes’ drive from the hotel, and staff can arrange transfers from €90 each way.

Automobiles

Your own set of wheels comes in handy for taking in the island. A navigation app will accurately lead you here, but there’s no sign for the hotel off the main road — a marker for Camí de Na Miquela is your giveaway; keep driving along the winding country lane and you’ll reach the hotel, which has a free private carpark.

Worth getting out of bed for

Hotel Son Xotano’s heart-of-the-island setting places you within easy reach of Mallorca’s highlights reel. You could limber up for the day with a yoga class on your terrace or in the garden, before upping the ante with a guided hike or cycling tour through countryside or up peaks. Staff can arrange romantic hot-air balloon rides or cooking classes in Palma; you could also ride the sunshine-yellow train from the capital to picturesque Sollér. Take to the seas with a private yacht charter or in a traditional Llaüt, dipping into coves and calas along the east coast. And you can say salud to your Balearic adventures at afternoon wine tastings at small-scale bodegas.

Local restaurants

Seafood paella and other Mallorquín favourites are showstoppers at waterfront Ca n’Eduardo in Palma, but its views over the harbour and out to the cathedral steal the show. Cabra Blanca is hot on seasonality, changing its modern menus regularly in keeping with the island’s bounties. Field-to-fork dining is the MO at hedonist La Farm, which is set amid olive and almond trees, and celebrates all things local.

Local cafés

Senseless is anything but: this café-slash-gallery delivers temptations in the form of creamy cortados, homemade dishes and creative artwork.

Local bars

Good food, wine and design come together at Bodega Santa Catarina, where vine terraces supply green views and fine vintages.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this country hotel in the Balearics and unpacked their olive oil and ensaimadas, a full account of their bucolic break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hotel Son Xotano in Mallorca…

Historic estate, head-turning backdrop and rustic-luxe design (with a healthy splash of stripes) are your telltale signs of an Annua group boutique hotel — Smith-approved César Lanzarote, Amagatay Menorca and Hotel Rural Morvedra Nou fit this bijou bill. And newcomer Hotel Son Xotano delivers on its sister stays’ pedigree, and some.

The honey-hued farmhouse is brightened by pops of powder-blue across shutters, drapes, sunloungers; jewel-toned bougainvillea and pomegranate trees, and meringue-like parasols, piped along its various terraces.

A garden restaurant boosts Son Xotano’s alfresco appeal — setting the stage for starlit dining, shaded by olive trees, and perfumed by sweet jasmine. But its immaculate interiors are just as alluring, with Japanese-style murals, traditional ikat prints and beamed ceilings. You’ll find a double walk-in shower in one suite, others have tubs big enough for two — which happens to be the magic number at this grown-up retreat.
