Setting

Rewilding nature reserve

Evocative of a boat, sustainable Swedish stay The Ark at Eriksberg is one ship in the Eriksberg Hotel and Nature Reserve’s fleet. Two by two, you’ll go into its savannah-facing suites, each with a balcony and nature-inspired design; some also have a window-framed tub. Moor up with the hotel’s other guests over dinners of estate-reared prime cuts or in a fire-toasted bar; or choose to keep company with the eagles, bison and deer — and a skilled guide, of course — you’ll see on safari adventures.

Please note

Eriksberg Hotel and Nature Reserve is a 1,348-hectare estate with several lodgings, one of which is The Ark, so you’ll cross paths with the resort’s other guests in the communal areas, such as the restaurants, bars and sauna.

At the hotel

Indoor and outdoor gyms; sauna; farm shop; herb garden; seasonal walking trail, and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV with Chromecast, climate control, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and bespoke bath products.

Our favourite rooms

It’s smooth sailing on board The Ark at Eriksberg, where each balcony-toting room overlooks the savannah, which changes throughout the seasons — in winter, the sea flows into the bay; grazing animals dot the dry land in summer. And your green-minded hosts have brought nature indoors, too: an earthy palette, floor-to-ceiling windows and local-wood furnishings decorate the Double Rooms. The three individually styled Suites each reference a natural element: Himmel nods to the sky with its atmospheric blue details and cloud-like rugs; monochrome Urberg is a canvas of local stone, and Skog is a forest fantasy with a tree-trunk-framed bed and mossy textures.

Poolside

You’ll find the petite pool on the terrace outside the relaxation area. It’s open from 8am until 10pm for heated dips that overlook the nature reserve, and there are dedicated hours for families.

Packing tips

There’s no need for binoculars or telescopes: you’ll find both in your room. Leave the wildlife books behind too — Eriksberg has its own app, which you can download for audio guides and maps of the reserve.

Also

If hiking trails and walking safaris don’t scratch your fitness itch, there are two gyms: one is decked out with Technogym machines; the second is outdoors and has wooden kit.

Pet‐friendly

Pooches are welcome in some Double Rooms for SEK350 each a stay, or one of the Suites for SEK1,050 each a stay. See more pet-friendly hotels in Blekinge.

Children

Welcome. Double Rooms take an extra bed, and up to two children can stay on a double sofa-bed in a Suite. There’s a playground and safari park, plus little Smiths aged four to 15 are welcome in the pool from 9am–11am and 2pm–4pm.

Sustainability efforts

The Ark at Eriksberg spotlights local materials, including the wood used in its boat-like design and for room furnishings. Bedrooms are heated by a geothermal system; external corridors help to conserve energy; and the sedum roof collects rainwater. The surrounding nature reserve runs rewilding projects, and the hotel’s seasonal restaurants source meat and other produce from the estate. Its name is apt, too: the suspended structure doubles as a shelter for animals, which you can admire from the glass floor-panel in your room.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Views by the floor-to-ceiling windows in Havsörnen are full of stars come evening. All of Eriksberg Hotel’s guests dine at these two spots, not just those staying at The Ark, so you’ll want to book any meals in advance.

Dress Code

Take cues from your rugged surroundings and opt for nature-blending hues. In-your-hiking-garb flies at Visenten; freshen up for evenings at Havsörnen.

Hotel restaurant

Pre-safari sustenance is found at Visenten, with its breakfast buffet of homemade charcuterie and other day-starting classics, plus dairy- and gluten-free options. You can swing by for lunches of estate-sourced game, too. Dinner-only Havsörnen is set in the old manor house, but its Scandinavian tasting menus are suitably modern and spotlight hyper-local prime cuts. At both spots, seasonal produce determines the offerings, but venison tends to be a year-round favourite.

Hotel bar

Havsörnen’s homey bar is a cosy place for an apéritif, preferably enjoyed in one of the leather fireside armchairs, and its country-home-style interiors are adorned with deerskins and wall-mounted antlers. Downstairs in the manor house, you’ll find the Relax Bar — where robes are encouraged — for post-sauna refreshment and savannah-ogling sundowners. The glass-walled wine cellar houses around 9,000 bottles, but at least gives you something to ogle while you’re deciding your pick.

Last orders

At Visenten, breakfast is 7am to 10am, and lunch is 11.30 to 2.30pm. Dinner at Havsörnen is from 5pm to 8.30pm.

Room service

You can order dishes from a dedicated menu between 3pm and 10pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

You’re not the only guests checking in at The Ark at Eriksberg: depending on the time of year, fallow deer, wild boar and European bison are your fellow residents. Naturally, outdoor pursuits rank high on daily agendas at this wildlife-rich reserve. Staff can arrange a variety of seasonal safaris in their park: in spring and summer, get a closer look at the animals on foot, bike or canoe; nighttime drives and eagle-spotting adventures mark the colder months.

Guides can take you on scenic hikes; the one on Dragsö Island is scented by juniper and fuelled by fika (a Scandi take on a coffee break), with homemade buns. Or take it even slower with pike or trout fishing, both as meditative an experience as forest bathing, which is also offered. Stick close to home with a tour of the sculpture-dotted estate, learning about its centuries-old history, and toast to your day with a champagne tasting or private fireside dinner.

Local restaurants

You’re unlikely to dine outside of the resort, given The Ark at Eriksberg’s remote setting and its two dining spots.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this eco-minded hotel in Sweden and unpacked their fika buns and hiking kit, a full account of their nature-swathed break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Ark at Eriksberg in Blekinge…

Anchored on a sprawling nature reserve in the Blekinge archipelago, The Ark at Eriksberg is your gateway to the great outdoors: island hikes, walking safaris and bird-watching canoe trips fill rosy-cheeked days out.

The savannah acts as screensaver to The Ark’s bedrooms and the wider Eriksberg Hotel’s facilities (which you’ll share with the resort’s other guests); but the interiors are just as awe-inspiring.

Local architect Oskar Årevall helmed the sustainable, ship-like design; and interior studio Bernadotte & Kylberg — which was co-founded by Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, no less — took style inspiration from the region's flora and fauna. Skog suite is the pièce de résistance, run through with slender tree trunks, and sporting bespoke lilypad-shaped tables and tactile moss-like rugs, reflecting the whimsical woodland that lies beyond your private balcony.

You might not spy any pixies or elves — guides are better equipped to point out fallow deer and European bison — but there’s a magic to the reserve, especially felt aboard The Ark.
