Setting

Made in Madeleine

Ooh-la-la interiors — inspired by their locale’s 1970s era as a soignée spot for night owls — transform a classic Parisian crashpad in Madeleine into a colourful outré address. Hôtel Florida Paris brings vamped-up vintage glamour and a convivial bar-restaurant to a Haussmannian mansion in the capital’s upscale 8th arrondissement. Here, the Champs-Elysées is on your doorstep and glimpses of the Eiffel Tower tease from some rooms.

At the hotel

Paid laundry service (Monday to Saturday) and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: air-conditioning, TV with Chromecast, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and Diptyque bath products.

Our favourite rooms

The strokable autumnal-hued interiors of Classic and Superior rooms are high on panache. Deluxe Rooms come with more lounging space and art-deco stylings. Top billing goes to La Suite Florida — a light-filled, blue-toned confection with a bath-toting marble bathroom.

Spa

Hôtel Florida Paris doesn’t have a spa, but to keep your workouts on track, the hotel partners with a gym, Neoness, a 10-minute walk away in the 9th. Staff are also happy to arrange personal training laced with sightseeing potential, such as yoga in a park; a guided bike ride, or riverside runs.

Packing tips

Hotel Florida’s tactile interiors will leave you craving textural layers — all the better if they’re laced with vintage cool: suede, bouclé knits, silk and tweed top our wish list.

Also

Its jungle-boogie décor may take you back half a century, but rewind 50 years further to the Roaring Twenties and you’ll uncover the hotel's literary creds, as a drinking hole for discerning creatives, rumoured to have included F Scott Fitzgerald.

Children

Little Smiths are welcome and there are connecting room options. Although there’s no specific kit for tots at the hotel, babysitting can be arranged with notice from €33 an hour.

Sustainability efforts

Hôtel Florida Paris takes basic steps to reduce its impact on the environment, avoiding single-use plastic, recycling, and reducing water and energy consumption. At restaurant Nepita, the hotel sources fruit and vegetables from Une Ferme du Perche, a family-run micro farm championing sustainable, seasonal produce and agricultural practices that support biodiversity.

Top Table

We’ll take our morning oeufs brouillés and espresso pavement-side, please.

Dress Code

Soignée all the way: bold pre-loved pieces; classic French tailoring and statement accessories.

Hotel restaurant

Burgundy velvet, patterned flooring and gloss-white moulded swivel chairs bring vintage charm to the dining room at Nepita, where picture windows flood the space with light and on sunny days, pavement bistro tables beckon. Chef Amandine Chaignot takes inspiration from her travels for her polished plates, and pleasingly, wanderlust seems to have taken her mostly to the Mediterranean: go formal with a course-by-course celebration of Gallic classics — parsley-flecked escargots, sumptuous steaks, raspberry and pistachio millefeuilles; or work your way through the strictly-French wine list with casual sharing plates of cheese, charcuterie, padrón peppers and ham croquettes.

Hotel bar

Taking their lead from Hotel Florida’s yesteryear clientele, cocktails at Nepita’s all-day bar are timeless and globetrotting with a drinks list anchored by the classics, year round. Seasonal additions might mean herb-topped summer spritzes or whisky-laced winter warmers. The wine list is toujours français with a focus on natural, organic or biodynamic bottles and a good selection by the glass. For afternoon tea, the choice of loose-leaf blends pairs perfectly with dainty patisserie.

Last orders

Breakfast hours are 7am until 10am (30 minutes later at weekends); for lunch, it’s noon until 2pm (excluding Saturdays); afternoon tea is 3.30pm until 6pm; for dinner, 7pm until 9.30pm (10pm, Thursday to Sunday).

Room service

Available daily between 5pm and 10pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

Personal training at Hôtel Florida Paris has a postcard-quality: ask staff to arrange a riverside run; sightseeing bike ride, or yoga in the park. For less-energetic forays, the concierge team has the inside track on the City of Light’s classics: small-group tours of the Louvre, cruises on the Seine; guided walks of Ile de la Cité and Nôtre-Dame. They can also sort tickets to stupefying stained glass in Sainte Chapelle, and most of the capital’s museums, plus day trips to the Palaces of Versailles. Within stomping distance — as well as the ritz of the Golden Triangle’s shops and department stores — are the Museum of Perfume, and operatic soirées at the Palais Garnier.

Local restaurants

Lamp-lit, linen-topped tables bring the twinkle of Parisian romance to contemporary bistro, Madie — named for its Madeleine location, it riffs on French staples such as beef bourguignons and salsa-verde-drizzled salmon. Seasonality and market-fresh ingredients bring a daily changing menu of regional fare to neighbourhood bistro, Bartoque, which is set in a modern dining room with sleek industrial touches. Aesthetes should make a beeline for petit eatery Le Sauvage, where artistry accompanies fine-dining plates of monkfish with Breton beans, and Black Angus beef with olives and oyster mushrooms.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this storied stay in the 8th arrondissement and unpacked their vintage sunglasses and sequins, a full account of their retro escape will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hôtel Florida Paris…

Haussmannian mansion, boulevard address, Eiffel Tower views — how simple it would have been for design house Liautard and the Queen to have taken their cue from Hôtel Florida Paris’s classically Parisian features. Or they could have been inspired by its Roaring Twenties heyday, when it was frequented by notable patrons such as F Scott Fitzgerald.

It’s true that you can find art-deco flourishes dotted throughout (fan-shaped headboards, soft-blue palettes, brushed brass), but there’s a characterful irreverence for era here that knits mid-century design with Seventies pizzazz, and makes it playful.

Bringing equal fanfare to service is a deft concierge team, on hand to arrange any guided excursions or tickets you’ll need. Or you could take a flâneurial approach to boulevard wanders, boutique-hopping and pavement-café pitstops — before returning to moreish Mediterranean plates at Hôtel Florida’s bar-restaurant, Nepita.

This is a 21st century stay that’s retro in all the right places.
