Setting

Below La Butte

Chivalry isn’t dead at boho-chic boutique hotel Monsieur Aristide, named after the Belle Époque cabaret singer. Debonair interiors pair era-evoking furnishings with restful, neutral hues; a leafy internal courtyard adds to the sense of sanctuary. Your gallant hosts can courteously recommend local in-the-know spots, but we love their own restaurant, bar and outdoor terrace for live music, candlelit aperitifs and seasonal raclette evenings. Monsieur Aristide is a true man about Montmartre.

Our favourite rooms

It’s an art to kit out interiors with mainly vintage and flea-market finds but deliver a final look that’s polished and soothing, as nailed by Monsieur Aristide. Extra relaxation points are scored in an Executive Room, which opens onto the hotel’s verdant courtyard; or the top-floor Duplex Suite awards more privacy — and space — with its neighbourhood-surveying terrace and split-level set-up.

Packing tips

The hotel nods to Belle Époque cabaret singer Aristide Bruant — don a wide-brimmed hat or red scarf to emulate his trademark look.

Hotel restaurant

La Table d’Aristide is a love-letter to Montmartre’s bistros, with its gingham tablecloths, vintage crockery and flickering candles. The menu is just as true to its locale: reimagined French favourites are designed for sharing and spotlight seasonal ingredients. Over winter (November to February), its Alpine concept Le Chalet d’Aristide takes over the space with traditional raclette and decadent desserts; but the year-round breakfast buffet of honey from Montmartre, charcuterie and cheese, and homemade muesli is just as indulgent.

Hotel bar

The mixologists at Café Aristide shake up a mean cocktail with homemade syrups, the house go-to being a Secret de la Butte (rum, curaçao, coconut water, spices). The bar draws a local crowd, so you might brush shoulders with Paris’ creatives, especially at live-music events on most Saturday nights. Swing by from 5pm to midnight, Tuesday to Saturday (until 10pm, Mondays).

Last orders

Breakfast is from 7am–10am. Dinner at La Table is 6pm–10.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday; it opens for lunch noon–2.30pm, Saturday and Sunday. Le Chalet seasonally opens from 6pm–10.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

Room service

You can take breakfast in bed year-round, and order dishes from the restaurant menu to your door between 6.30pm and 11pm, March to October (in-room dining isn’t available during Le Chalet’s winter residency).

Worth getting out of bed for

Monsieur Aristide puts Montmartre and its Boho culture on centre stage, so it’s only natural for your days to be spent in and around the 18th arrondissement. People-watch in Place du Tertre, sample Paris-grown grapes at the city’s last remaining vineyard Vigne du Clos Montmartre or arrange a romantic rendezvous at Le Mur des Je T’aime. The Dali Museum is petite but packs a Surrealist punch; seek out more avant-garde entertainment at lady-in-red Moulin Rouge

Local restaurants

Cheap-and-cheerful Bouillon Pigalle is a cornerstone bistro with all your Gallic classics, magnums of wine and statement windows. La Chaise Haute puts a modern spin on refined French fare, with thoughtfully presented dishes of colourful, seasonal produce. If you’ve overdone it on Paris’ cheese and bread, carb-load the Italian way instead at cosy trattoria Al Caratello with its hearty plates of pasta and tiramisù.

Local cafés

The pâtisseries at well-loved bakery Pain Pain are almost too pretty to eat, but will be quickly devoured, nonetheless. Cinephiles and caffeine fiends gather at Café des Deux Moulins, a traditional brasserie that starred in .

Local bars

Red is the overriding theme at long-standing wine bar La Cave des Abbesses: its signature outdoor tables and awnings match its charcuterie boards and bottles of rouge. Amber-hued Hiru shakes up classic cocktails alongside its comprehensive list of regional wines and Spanish-style tapas bites.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this bijou hotel in Montmartre and unpacked their lithograph prints and locally made chocolates, a full account of their bohemian break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Monsieur Aristide in Paris…

You might not have heard of cabaret singer Aristide Bruant, but there’s a chance you’ve seen him — he’s immortalised in his black cloak and red scarf in distinct lithographic posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, which advertised Bruant’s club, Ambassadeurs, in the late 19th-century.

These prints now adorn many brasseries and bistros globally, and have inspired polished pied-à-terre Monsieur Aristide. But the hotel’s palette — a verdant internal courtyard, soft-hued bedrooms and mustard-yellow parasols on the terrace — is contrast to the posters’ muted shades.

Its restaurant’s gingham tablecloths, weekend live music and winter raclette dinners are evocative of your Montmartre locale, which has long been the heart of Paris’ Bobo scene. There’s romance to be found along the 18th arrondissement’s cobblestone streets, but with the experienced Chapitre Six group at the helm, this boutique hotel is the neighbourhood’s top charmer.
