Setting

Literary Left Bank

Villa-des-Prés is set on a rue described by Apollinaire as dear to the poets of his generation, and there’s much to wax lyrical about here. Interiors by Bruno Borrione capture the feeling of a discerning Parisian’s apartment, pairing custom furniture with original Haussmannian details and commissioned works by a handful of in-demand contemporary artists. Add in a living room-like cocktail bar, sleek spa and a sense of privacy rare for such a central address, and you’ve a pied-à-terre worth penning a verse for.

Our favourite rooms

The dreamy scene visible from the Apartment’s terrace stretches from Sacré-Coeur across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. In a Suite, you’ll have a separate living room, ideal for dinner chez toi courtesy of the local brasserie.

Poolside

Softly lit and suitably high-fashion in feel for the Rive Gauche, the 13-metre indoor lap pool is framed by stone columns and outsize mirrors — presumably to check your effortless chignon has survived your swim.

Spa

Unwinding at the spa could be as simple as hiding out in the sauna, hopping into the sensory shower or curling up poolside with a cup of herbal tea. For some extra TLC, head for a massage or facial from French-Californian brand Odacité (available from 7am to 10pm). Hit the 24-hour fitness room if only to appreciate how the hotel’s eye for design extends there, too — there’s a certain elegance to breaking a sweat in a space with damask wallpaper.

Packing tips

If you can track one down, a copy of Apollinaire’s collection Le Flâneur des Deux Rives will help romanticise your Parisian wanderings — look out for the part where he sings the praises of Rue de Buci.

Also

No biggy, but the stained glass in the hotel’s central spiral staircase was worked on by the same team who helped restore Notre-Dame.

Pet‐friendly

Small, well-behaved dogs are welcome in all rooms, on request and for a daily €50 pet fee. Dogs aren’t allowed in the bar. See more pet-friendly hotels in Paris.

Children

All ages are welcome, but this Left Bank stay leans more grown-up. Babysitting can be arranged with advance notice for an extra charge.

Take your morning coffee between the pot plants on the patio; for a knees-touching nightcap, claim the bar’s curved corner banquette.

Dress Code

Effortless glamour, optionally accessorised with inky fingers or an artful paint smudge.

Hotel restaurant

There’s no restaurant, but you can graze on cheeseboards, charcuterie and salads at the bar.

Hotel bar

Whether you're dropping into Villa-des-Prés’s bar for a morning café au lait or cosying up for a nightcap, you’ll feel as though you’re in the Sixième living room of an art collector pal. Signature drinks are inspired by individual artworks on display around the hotel — lucky you if you’re in Room 206, where you can admire the Virginie Hucher piece that served as muse for a cocktail of cognac, fig, crème de cassis and cocoa bitters. Otherwise, sink into a chestnut leather armchair with a St Germain champagne spritz.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 7am to 11.30am; the bar is open from 7am to midnight, with cocktails served from 2.30pm.

Room service

You can order light bites to your room around the clock and dishes from a nearby brasserie can be delivered to your door between noon and 11pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

Art lovers are in luck around here — the Louvre is a 10-minute stroll away, and Musée d’Orsay isn't much further. Almost on your doorstep you’ll find Musée Delacroix, which is set in Eugene Delacroix’s apartment and celebrates his work as leader of the French Romantic painters. If the art of the Middle Ages is more your thing, walk east to Musée de Cluny, where the collection is housed in a mediaeval mansion. The storied Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés might as well be an art museum, too, with its vaulted, starry night-painted ceiling, exquisite murals and remnants of Romanesque architecture. And the leafy streets of Saint-Germain-des-Prés are dotted with antiques dealers and art galleries, so an aimless wander around here will prove just as inspiring.

Local restaurants

Head to Colvert for an elevated take on old-school French flavours, made all the more nostalgic by the vintage bistro interiors. You can’t book, but you’ll want to join the crowd of clued-in hopefuls for a table at tapas and wine bar Freddy’s — if there is a wait, the razor clams alone will make it worth your while. In a famously omnivorous city, Fellows stands out for its fully vegetarian menu of fresh, handmade pasta dishes, from cacio e za’atar to a slow-simmered mushroom bolognese.

Local cafés

An enduring symbol of Saint-Germain-des-Prés — its façade was declared a historic monument a century ago — Café Buci is still a romantic spot to watch the world go by. In true bohemian style, it’s open until the wee hours each morning. Les Deux Magots is similarly steeped in Left Bank history, counting Hemingway, Picasso and James Joyce among the crowd who once sipped coffee (and likely a good deal of absinthe) under its green-trimmed awning.

Local bars

Part wine bar, part time capsule, Chez Georges has been going since the Fifties and still charms locals with its unpretentious atmosphere and walls plastered with vintage posters — it’s not huge, so come prepared to get cosy with neighbouring tables. For a more 21st-century option, take a seat at Chez Nous’s sleek wooden bar and ask for a recommendation from their list of natural, organic and small-producer bottles.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Villa-des-Prés in Paris…

Saint-Germain-dés-Pres is a neighbourhood with a character so distinct it has its own adjective, and few places capture the refined artistry that it takes to be truly germopratin like Villa-dés-Pres. Bruno Borrione’s interiors for this boutique Left Bank stay feel entirely at home within the Haussmannian walls, reflecting exactly how you’d expect a literary local to be living — clean, understated lines paired with Italian mosaic bathrooms and accents of oxblood, cherry and cobalt. The latter come in large part from the contemporary art collection, which was commissioned by gallery owner Amélie du Chalard and feels in step with the quarter's heritage as a seedbed of creativity.

After exploring the streets that were once the haunt of Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, there’s a sleek, sculptural spa to retreat to. Otherwise, settle into a mid-century armchair at the bar for an intimate evening debating existentialism — or simply whether to order another saffron-laced Negroni.
