Setting

Eastern seaside suburb

Capitolo Riviera is cool, calm and connected: its indoor-outdoor design is as seductive as it is sustainable; nature-swathed Nervi is its laidback locale, and Genoa’s spirited city centre and the ever-popular Portofino are within easy reach. Green is a theme here in many guises: plants line this boutique’s balconies and terraces, the spa soothes with all-natural products, and a sea-facing restaurant spotlights zero-kilometre produce. We’re green too – only in our case, it’s with envy…

Our favourite rooms

Sleek, urban design and all-natural details are married together in Capitolo Riviera’s rooms and suites. Survey the sea, the next-door Sant’Ilario neighbourhood or the greenery-carpeted mountains from your private balcony in the Premium Sea View rooms. The Capitolo Suites are bellíssimo with a capital B, perfect for steamy soaks in the huge tub.

Poolside

The heated pool takes cues from the rest of the retreat’s penchant for indoor-outdoor design, and goes one step further: it extends from the steamy spa’s interior to a foliage-framed terrace outside. A retractable glass window separates the two sections to allow for leisurely lengths and post-treatment tanning. The sunken garden setting is dotted with seating areas and sunloungers, and the pristine pool is open from 10am until 8pm.

Spa

Onde Spa is a sleek sanctuary for all-natural pampering with two treatment rooms, a sauna, Turkish bath, Jacuzzi and hydrotherapy pool. Here you can cut off from the outside world, and the glass window dividing the large outdoor-reaching pool can stay drawn to help with that…

Top Table

Near the open-plan kitchen for front-row culinary action, or on the pool-gazing terrace.

Dress Code

Take cues from your green-minded hosts and put a sustainable spin on riviera style, with your best vintage finds, boutique buys and organic threads.

Hotel restaurant

Industrial-chic restaurant, Botanico, pairs leafy plants and floor-to-ceiling windows with charcoal and gunmetal hues. In the open-plan kitchen, chef Giovanni Astolfoni and his team give regional Italian cuisine a contemporary glow-up (complementing the slick setting), and all the ingredients are sourced locally, such as Taggiasca olives or Ligurian-caught seafood, which shines in refined takes on ciuppin (a velvety fish stew) and cappon magro (a prawn and squid salad). A spacious terrace overlooks the hotel’s garden and is primed for balmy summer suppers.

Hotel bar

The bottle-lined lobby bar is decorated with eyecatching coffee table books and mid-century-inspired furniture. You'll find bartenders shaking up signature cocktails and pouring local wines by the glass, a selection that changes daily.

Last orders

Breakfast is 7.30am to 10.30am; brunch is 11am to 2pm; lunch is 12.30pm to 3pm, and dinner is 7.30pm to 11pm. The bar pours from 11am to midnight.

Address
Capitolo Riviera
Viale Delle Palme 16A
Genoa
16167
Italy

Capitolo Riviera sits in coastal Nervi, a former fishing village on the eastern outskirts of Genoa; it’s within easy walking distance from pebbled beaches and a storied cliffside promenade.

Planes

Genova City Airport is a 30-minute drive from the hotel; staff can arrange transfers on request, plus taxis and public buses are readily available.

Trains

Genova Nervi rail station is a two-minute walk from the hotel; Trenitalia services arrive here from Santa Margherita Ligure–Portofino and Genova Piazza Principe, as well as from further afield cities including Milan and Pisa.

Automobiles

Hire a set of wheels to take in Liguria’s curving coastline by car – Cinque Terre and Laigueglia are each a 90-minute drive, Portofino is only an hour away by road. The hotel has two car parks; a valet service is available for €45 a day and should be requested in advance.

Worth getting out of bed for

Nature is on your doorstep in Nervi – stroll through the manicured Parchi di Nervi, which is home to Galleria D'Arte Moderna and a sweet-smelling rose garden; head on a hillside hike for sea-facing panoramas, or on lower ground, there’s the Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi, a coastline-hugging promenade that winds its way past swimming spots to the quaint port. And Capitolo Riviera’s Ligurian location places you within day-tripping distance from gritty Genoa, pastel-hued Portofino and clifftop Cinque Terre.

Local restaurants

Trattoria da Olindo makes the most of its portside perch to deliver seafood-centric dishes in a cavernous dining room or to a sun-kissed terrace. Don't judge a book by its cover at rustic Bistrot del Porticciolo: the regionally inspired menu showcases lesser-known Ligurian dishes, which are simple yet delicious. Settle in at beach-club-cum-restaurant Bagni Medusa for just-caught fish, lots of creamy pesto and generously topped pizzas, before a postprandial dip in the rock pool-turned-lido.

Local cafés

The green exterior of Bar Senza Pensieri Nervi blends with its leafy surroundings; come for morning cappuccini or early evening Negronis. Make a pit stop at Bar Pisacane III on your coastal promenade stroll for strawberry and lemon granita.

Local bars

Sip sundowners on the terrace at I Troeggi, which overlooks a rocky cove. You could have your aperitivo at port-facing Il Dodo, then return after supper for late-into-the-night cocktails.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this eco-chic hotel in Nervi and unpacked their fresh focaccia and salty swimwear, a full account of their seaside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Capitolo Riviera in Genoa…

The best of both worlds come into play at Capitolo Riviera: you’ll find resort-style frills, such as an indulging spa, slick bar and terrace-toting restaurant, but on a boutique scale. Its intimate feel extends to the romance-inspiring rooms and suites, where all eyes are on the sea, verdant mountains or the hotel's gardens (except, perhaps, when you’re in one of the tubs big enough for two, then you might be distracted).

This nature-loving nest is set in east-of-Genoa neighbourhood Nervi; its coastal co-ords make it more of an escape-the-city retreat than urban basecamp. Yet the ungentrified charms of Genoa are a 30-minute drive or train ride away, as are other seaside towns along Liguria’s lesser-known coastline. And while the glamour of la dolce vita may prevail in nearby Portofino and Cinque Terre, sleepy Nervi is more preaching of dolce far niente – the sweetness of doing nothing...
