Need to know

Rooms

Five apartments.

10am; and check-in is at 3pm. Both are flexible, on request and subject to availability.

More details

Rates don’t include breakfast, but baskets are available for €20 each, or the in-house nutritionist can put together a tailored-to-you spread for €50.

Also

All apartments are split-level with stairs between floors, except Santa Margherita and Portofino, which are both set across one floor and accessible via a lift — although Portofino’s rooftop terrace is reached via stairs.

Please note

Each apartment has its own national identification code (CIN), which you can find listed in their individual descriptions.

At the hotel

Concierge, public beach nearby, private chefs on-call, charged laundry service, housekeeping on request for €25 an hour usually for three hours, yoga room, gym and free WiFi throughout. In apartments: fully equipped kitchen, smart TV, climate control, tea- and coffee-making kit, free bottled water and Acqua di Parma bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Each of the five apartments has its own layout and tricked-out kitchen, so picks typically depend on whether you’d rather a dual-level living space or sprawling outdoor area. For alfresco soaks, two-bedroom San Fruttuoso is the only option with a hot tub, but it's the Portofino Apartment that has our hearts for its in-the-turret setting and rooftop sundeck that touts seemingly boundless Riviera views. And if you’re travelling with a crowd, all five apartments can be rented as a unit for up to 36 guests.

Spa

There’s no spa on-site, but the hotel has partnered with the nearby Beauty Spa Health and Fitness Club for those in need of de-knotting. The hotel also has its own small gym, equipped with all the muscle-flexing necessities, and a yoga room for private flows.

Packing tips

Binoculars for window-side bay watching, and enough space for your Thursday market finds.

Also

The hotel’s underground carpark doubles up as an art gallery, lined with 33 one-off pieces from artist-in-residence, Giorgio Piccaia.

Children

Welcome; babysitting can be arranged from €25, and everything from cots to bed railings can be brought in on request.

Sustainability efforts

Villa Porto Rapallo supports its locale with a number of sustainable measures: energy-efficient bulbs limit light pollution, low-flow taps and garden irrigation systems keep water waste to a minimum, recycling schemes are in place throughout, and all cleaning products are Earth-kind and biodegradable. Artwork in the underground gallery and furniture in the apartments were all sourced from regional artisans, and staff recommendations are rooted in promoting locally run, sustainable restaurants.

Worth getting out of bed for

Your stay will be planned down to the finest details at Villa Porto Rapallo, where your on-call concierge can arrange everything from cooking classes with local chefs, private Portofino-bound boat trips, wine tastings and guided tours, to on-your-deck yoga flows, personal training, one-on-one sessions with an in-house nutritionist and painting lessons with the villa’s artist-in-residence, Giorgio Piccaia.

Rapallo’s main beach — San Michele — is a few minutes’ walk away; during the summer months, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and jet-skis are yours to rent. Baia de Paraggi and its lido-like Bagni Fiore are well worth the 15-minute drive if you’re looking for a change of sun-soaked scenery. Speech-stealing views of the Cinque Terre are your company on the Montallegro cable car, and the coastal hiking path between Portofino and Rapallo is a paradise for ramblers.

If you’re staying in town, take in its historic cobblestone streets, centuries-old churches and curios-crammed museumsVilla Tigullio and its pin-drop-quiet gardens are a particularly notable stop. And on Thursdays, local artisans and vendors spread out along the waterfront for the town’s storied Mercato del Giovedì.

Local restaurants

Il Salotto di Rapallo is a 10-minute walk from the villa, and dishes up bay-fresh seafood and classic Ligurian cuisine with a contemporary twist. Seasonal menus at U Giancu mimic its countryside surroundings with garden-grown ingredients, and its family-photo-adorned setting feels more like visiting your nonna than a revered restaurant. Milan-favourite Langosteria has opened its doors in a nautically nodding base in Paraggi’s Bagni Fiore, with water-front views and fish-focused pasta plates to match.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from these well-appointed apartments along Portofino’s coast and shoveled the sand from their shoes, a full account of their small-town break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Villa Porto Rapallo in Riviera di Levante…

The coastal town of Rapallo may be small, but its legacy is certainly mighty. It was in the Sixties when this now-revered Riviera base first began to draw creatives in crowds; and before long, their favoured spot became the-then Hotel Victory. These days, you’ll find it by the name of Villa Porto Rapallo — a handful of five serviced apartments with some serious concierge cred to boast.

With tunes by Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra echoing through its walls, the villa’s latest owners protect its heritage, maintaining opulent Liberty-like features throughout each ensconcing abode, where fully equipped kitchens, cushy living spaces and Gulf-gazing private terraces come as standard. And much like it was for this spot’s rhythmic residents, everything will be organised on your behalf, from sunset boat rides and alfresco yoga flows to painting sessions and sautéing with local chefs.

Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ is more than a well-whistled melody at Villa Porto Rapallo, it’s a way of life...
