With several standalone beachfront dwellings peeking out through clusters of palms along Oaxaca’s coast – all thatched with woven-fronds – Casa Tortugas is more luxury village than villa, with a lagoon-style pool that stretches out languidly in front and vast tropical gardens feature lush jungly plantings threaded with stone paths, serpentine streams, decorative pools, and some hidden critters (carved ones, that is, but do keep your eyes peeled…). Native, natural materials have been used in crafting a fashionable rustic stay that feels luxurious yet at home in its surroundings, with bedrooms open to ocean views, an abundance of hammocks and day-beds, a sauna, and a Jacuzzi well placed for star-gazing.

First Glance

  • A collection of Balinese-style thatch-roofed villas with soaring ceilings and views of the Pacific Ocean, decked out with a Mexican-rustic look using natural materials (coconut husk, woven palm fronds, stone, Oaxacan ceramics and textiles). With bamboo hanging from the ceilings, sculptural furnishings, rugged walls, deep white couches, and iron chandeliers, this is a very elegant take on traditional Oaxacan style.

  • Indoor-outdoor palapa-style living space with a sitting area, dining table, traditional woven-palm-frond ceilings, decked wooden flooring and open walls to maximise the sea views.

  • A full kitchen with high palapa-style woven-palm-frond ceilings, a breakfast bar and windows all around, offering views of the dining area and pool and out to the beach. You might not use it though, because a personal chef is included in the villa rate to cook your free daily breakfasts (and other meals for a charge).

  • 1,500sq m of private grounds which are elegantly landscaped but keep a deep-in-the-jungle feel, with diverse flowering shrubs, tall palms, decorative emerald pools and meandering streamlets. To enhance this, there’s a number of playful sculptures scattered throughout too, including carved fish, starfish and hanging monkeys.
  • The beach on your doorstep is public, but can only be accessed by those in this residential enclave (which has security), so feels private. Take note that there’s no lifeguard on duty.
