Setting

Nature-blessed desert

Ocean breeze cools the dunes, rocky outcrops and dry riverbed surrounding Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast. The original desert sculptors, these currents bring wisps of fog to mornings and evenings at this all-frills safari stay; they air-condition dune adventures, game drives and spells on the camp’s pool deck, and serve as an enticing prelude to the dramatic scenery, shipwrecks and sealife you’ll encounter at the coast.

Standard prices listed on Mr & Mrs Smith are per night for two adults sharing.

On a raised wooden deck, set above sand level, a turquoise lap pool is your inviting cooling-off spot, edged by sunloungers.

Also

To see cape fur seals and Namibian’s unique Atlantic shoreline up close on a full-day guided trip, you’ll want to book a stay of at least three nights.

Children

Little Smiths aged six or older are welcome. This camp has one family suite. By prior arrangement, a dedicated staff member can supervise children; for kids aged 12 or younger, you’ll need to reserve a private safari vehicle (additional charges apply).

Sustainability efforts

Wilderness takes a threefold approach to sustainability, aiming to protect (with sensitive management between people and wildlife), empower (by investing in the local community) and educate (supporting pathways out of poverty). In total, its camps help to protect six million acres of land, highlighting conservation and bringing tourism to rural areas across the African continent. Each camp treads lightly following a set of strict standards that apply to the construction and operation of each stay. Standards cover water and energy consumption; monitoring of waste and recycling, and supply chain management. Camps are audited twice yearly and must comply with at least 85 per cent of the requirements. Any shortfalls are targeted to be addressed before the next audit. Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast runs entirely on solar power.

Food and Drink

Top Table

After dark, the star-freckled skies here make any table outdoors (or any chair beside the fire) a covetable spot.

Dress Code

Khaki cargos and tees fly by day; for alfresco dinners, smarten up and bring layers to boost your staying power.

Hotel restaurant

There’s nothing as formal in camp as a restaurant in the traditional sense. Dining at Hoanib Skeleton Coast is arranged effortlessly around the day’s scheduled activities. Evenings are often a chance to come together with other guests and staff over drinks before sitting down to seasonal plates featuring fresh picks from the camp’s vegetable garden. If you’re up and out early, expect a basic breakfast at camp, bolstered by drinks and snacks on the trail, before returning to an early lunch or brunch. Similarly, guided afternoon outings are always accompanied with on-location drinks and/or nibbles.

Hotel bar

Sundowners, apéritifs and drinks around the fire pit may well become part of your daily routine at Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast, and you’re unlikely to go thirsty with staff on hand to take your order for drinks — hot, cold or something a little stronger.

Last orders

Banish any expectations of set dining hours and embrace the fact that food and drink will be seamlessly integrated into your day just when you want it.

Room service

There’s no room service, but your tented suite has a minbar, and the main lodge is only a stroll away.

Worth getting out of bed for

Your desert setting at Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast is primed to fully immerse you in this remote pocket of the Kunene Region. Game drives follow the Hoanib riverbed in hopes of spotting elephant, giraffe, oryx, hyena and lion, as well as an abundance of birdlife. Take a deep dive into their conservation with a talk from an in-camp naturalist. Scaling the dunes in a 4WD is one for the thrillseekers; or take a day trip to the coast, where you’ll spy cape fur seals, (seasonally) flamingos, towering shipwrecks and rocky beach as far as the eye can see.

For a pan-Namibian adventure, make Smith-approved Wilderness Little Kulala among the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei your jumping-off point. From there, head to Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast, before travelling north towards the Angolan border and Wilderness Serra Cafema, which is home to the semi-nomadic Himba people. If it’s authentic rhino tracking you’re on the lookout for, you’ll want Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp in Damaraland in the mix.

Local restaurants

All meals and snacks are included with your stay — whether back at the lodge for dinner or out in the bush for a mid-drive pitstop.
