More details

Rates at Watergate Bay Hotel include buffet breakfast. If you’re staying in a Beach Loft, you’ll also get designated parking, a personal host, free wetsuit hire and access to a shared pantry.

Also

There are two wheelchair-adapted rooms (room 61 is a House Standard and room 62 is a House Standard Family Suite); each has a wet room, lowered bed and grab bars. The front desk can supply hearing loops as well as sand wheelchairs and pool hoists. The Living Space, Zacry’s and the Beach Hut are all accessible.

Gym, kids’ club, surf school and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, Ruark radio, climate control, tea- and coffee-making kit, bathrobes, slippers and local bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Froth-topped waves, stretching sand and speck-like surfers are a natural screensaver to most rooms at Watergate Bay Hotel, where picture windows frame beachfront vignettes. Ditch your device and let the sounds of the sea accompany meditations on your balcony in the Sea View Standard rooms. Little Smiths can compete for the top bunk in the two-bedroom House Best Family Suites, which are set up for bigger clans. The brightest jewel in the resort’s crown just might be the Beach Loft Suites, thanks to their prized perch above the Beach Hut, direct bay access and in-room bath tubs (in some lofts) that overlook the shore (room 102 also has a wood-burning stove for full Cornish cosiness).

Poolside

You’ll find the heated pool at the spa, framed by floor-to-water windows that overlook the spectacular bay. The infinity edge seamlessly blends with the sea beyond and on sunny days, the doors slide open to encourage sea-breeze-kissed dips. The pool is open daily from 7am to 9pm, but there are dedicated adults-only and family-friendly hours.

Spa

The Swim Club is the hotel's take on a spa, and after (leisurely) lengths in its pool, head for spells in the Finnish sauna or the terrace’s hot tub. The stretching views of the actual Watergate Bay Hotel are particularly soul-soothing, but all-natural massages and facials in one of three treatment rooms will take relaxation levels up a notch.

Packing tips

Depending on the time of year — and your level of bravery — swimsuits or wetsuits from Cornish-born brand Finisterre; you’ll also look like a local with a fleecy or towelling Dry Robe.

Also

There’s a small gym decked out with high-tech kit, weights and yoga mats, in case you start to feel the effects of one too many pasties…

Pet‐friendly

Up to two pooches are very welcome to stay for £20 a night (£15 for one dog) in any room. The Living Space, Beach Hut and the bay are dog-friendly. See more pet-friendly hotels in Cornwall.

Children

Very welcome. Extra beds for under-13s and free baby cots for under-threes can be added to most rooms; there are connecting options and dedicated family suites. The Kids’ Zone is for all ages and babysitting can be arranged with notice.

Best for

All ages.

Recommended rooms

The Beach Loft Family Suites, House Family Suites and Partial Sea View Family Suite take two adults and two children. Most rooms can fit an extra bed (charged at 25% of the room rate for under-13s) or a free baby cot for under-threes.

Crèche

Kids’ Zone caters to all ages: under-twos can try music and sensory play; there are craft workshops and cookery classes for little Smiths aged three to eight, and under-12s can participate in sport tournaments, quizzes and film nights. There is also a games room with Lego stations and board games, and staff can arrange family-friendly yoga and pizza-making afternoons.

Activities

During the summer, the Discovery Beach School has a host of nature-based activities for under-15s, such as conservation projects, woodworking and survival skills. You’ll find Wavehunters next to the hotel; head there for paddleboarding sessions, sunrise surfing or shoreside yoga.

Swimming pool

The pool is family-friendly, and there are dedicated kids-only hours during the holidays.

Meals

During the British school holidays, families can enjoy an earlier supper from 5pm to 5.45pm in the dining room. Zacry’s and the Beach Hut have children’s menus.

Babysitting

Babysitting (between 6pm and 1am) can be arranged, but you’ll need to enquire ahead of your arrival. There is a minimum booking of two hours, and prices start from £35.

No need to pack

Baby-listening devices, which can be delivered to all rooms except the Village Apartment; a colouring book — staff can print off bespoke illustrations for your little ’uns to decorate.

Sustainability efforts

Watergate Bay takes the eponymous beach below as inspiration for its green-minded initiatives. The bath products are as local as can be — they’re made in the bay; litter collected on beach clean-ups is sifted for craft materials for the Kids’ Zone and food waste is responsibly recycled. In addition, your hosts have partnered with local organisations in conservation and community projects.

Food and Drink

Top Table

The views are the star of the show, so for front-row seats opt for the Living Space’s terrace, the window-framed banquette at the Beach Hut, or by Zacry’s glass doors.

Dress Code

Barefoot and in your wetsuit flies at the Beach Hut; you’ll want to dust and dry off for meals at the Living Space and Zacry’s, but the ambience is still low-key.

Hotel restaurant

With active days come appropriate appetites, and the hotel’s three eateries are deft at fuelling your next adventure. You’ll find produce-proud Zacry’s on the sea wall, spotlighting local ingredients in colourful and creative dishes, such as crab ravioli with confit lemon and kelp-cured catch of the day, curated across three courses. The terrace-toting Living Space is open for day-starting brews, mezze bowls and boards, all the way through to alfresco sundowners: breakfast is served in this laidback, boho space; a varied buffet with a make-your-own waffle station is included with your stay. Pre-surf fuel comes in the form of DeBara Bakery treats and Indian-inspired breakfasts at the breezy Beach Hut; seasonal, locally led menus continue through to dinner.

Hotel bar

You’ll find refreshing tipples and oh-so-Cornish ciders and ales at the hotel’s three restaurants, which are all graced with the bay as their backdrop. You could also toast to your day at Swim Club Café Bar, with a classic cocktail on the pool deck or barista-style coffee in the quiet ocean room.

Last orders

Zacry’s serves dinner from 5.30pm–9.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday. The Living Space offers breakfast from 7.30am–10.30am, and lunch and dinner from noon–9pm. At the Beach Hut, breakfast is from 9am–11am, lunch is between noon–5pm, and for dinner, it’s 5pm–9pm.

Room service

A selection of dishes from the Living Space’s menu can be delivered to your door during the kitchen’s hours. If you’re staying in a Beach Loft, you can order plates from the Beach Hut on request.

Address
Watergate Bay Hotel
On The Beach Trevarrian Hill
Newquay
TR8 4AA
United Kingdom

You’ll find Watergate Bay hotel above the two-mile-long beach of the same name, close to Newquay on Cornwall’s northern coastline.

Planes

Cornwall Airport Newquay is a five-minute taxi ride away; Exeter Airport is a 90-minute drive.

Trains

Newquay train station is a 10-minute drive from the hotel but the only rail routes that call here are from Par, which is a stop on the London to Penzance line. Bodmin Parkway is 30 minutes away by road; staff can suggest taxi companies for pick-ups from either station.

Automobiles

A set of wheels is handy for reaching Cornwall’s pristine coves and seaside towns; Polzeath and Padstow are each a 40-minute drive away. There is free parking at the hotel, plus several electric-vehicle charging points.

Worth getting out of bed for

Family-friendly Watergate Bay Hotel takes its name from the majestic beach that unfurls below, and in true Cornish style, days here are typically spent outdoors or in the water. Perfect your Wim Hof breathwork during bracing dips, or suit up with kit and boards from hotel neighbour Wavehunters. They can arrange paddleboarding and surfing lessons, as well as beach-based cardio classes and yoga (you could also wander up to the Zen Den for view-blessed vinyasa flows). Meanwhile, little Smiths can go rockpooling or get their hands sandy at the forest-style Discovery Beach School.

The bay hosts an international volleyball tournament in September, and an events-packed cultural festival, Arts on the Beach, in June. But coastal rambles and wildlife-watching boat charters remain year-round staples, as do the hotel’s swim club, Kids’ Zone and sea-facing sauna.

Local restaurants

At the Fish House Fistral, simple seafood dishes pair well with crisp ales, which are best relished on the terrace that overlooks the surfer-dotted beach. In Padstow, Rick Stein’s riverside Seafood Restaurant is our catch-of-the-day; come for the freshly shucked oysters, elegantly presented plates and conservatory-set tables. Continue the seafood theme (when in Cornwall…) at Prawn on the Lawn, where the intimate setting sets the scene for daily changing sharing plates and Mexico-nodding cocktails.

Local cafés

A short stroll along the coastal path leads you to the Hangout, a bay-side food truck that fuels yogis and surfers with loaded English muffins, fruity smoothies and speciality coffee. Make a pitstop at caffeine-supplying cabin Cubs to pick up fresh pastries and frothy brews to accompany your beach yomp.

Local bars

The siren call of the beachfront Mermaid Inn lures with post-surf ciders and classic pub bites. Whimsical cocktail bar Tom Thumb impresses with lore-inspiring tipples, vintage furnishings and candle-lit corners.

There aren’t many hotels I’d entertain a six-hour car journey for (with two kids under four, no less), but Watergate Bay is one of them. I’ve been lucky enough to visit in the past, and with its stunning coastal location and kid-conscious set-up, I couldn’t resist taking the whole brood back to experience its magic together.

This time, however, we were staying in one of the newly renovated Beach Lofts, which is the ultimate upgrade, combining ultra-chic design with dog- and family-friendly touches for an idyllic coastal stay.

Pulling into our designated parking space, our personal host greeted us, pointing out the complimentary wetsuit hire and shared pantry on the way to our room (unsurprisingly, the unlimited free cake was a hit with the Little Smiths).

Our room — a spacious suite overlooking the bay — was a sanctuary of calm (or at least, it would’ve been without two kids and a dog in tow). Wide windows gave us front-row seats to the English National Surfing Championships, which happened to be taking place below, and provided a welcome distraction from Hey Duggee. The Little Smiths were enraptured by the giant bath tub (which came in very handy at bedtime), the swinging sofa and the bunk beds, which proved to be both a blessing and a curse (IYKYK).

Days began early (thank you, toddler body clock), but were made all the more glorious by the pre-breakfast pantry run we’d squeeze in before a proper cooked breakfast and DIY waffles over at the main hotel at a more sociable hour.

Once sated, Mr Smith ventured into the surf school while I took the Little Smiths to the Kids’ Zone, a haven of entertainment and crafts so captivating they didn’t even glance back. Taking full advantage of this kid-free window, I headed straight to the Swim Club, where a full-body massage was calling my name. After a quick circuit of swim-sauna-hot tub, I begrudgingly went to collect the sprogs, who breathlessly told me they’d like to return tomorrow (that makes three of us).

Lunch was a beachy, barefoot affair with pizza from the Beach Bar washed down with Cornish sparkling wine. Living in East London, we’re not that well equipped for the British seaside, but thankfully, the team at Watergate Bay have thought of everything to make an afternoon on the sand as dreamy as can be. Windbreakers, baby shades, buckets and spades, and fully equipped picnic rucksacks — it’s all there for the taking.

Complimentary baby monitors mean evenings are for parents, too. Sundowners are a must, and we took full advantage with a reservation at Zacry’s, enjoying a three-course menu of crab ravioli, barbecued monkfish, espresso martinis and petit fours — absolute heaven, and all without having to coax two broccoli-averse children to sit still.

Up early the next morning, we grabbed the lead and set off on a dog walk with the beach all to ourselves. Watching our Frenchie bound along the shoreline, a true salty sea dog, added another layer of joy to our visit. We did consider exploring nearby Newquay, but we were having so much fun we opted for lunch at the Beach Hut instead. We devoured Cornish mussels and fish and chips, followed by the essential Cornish cream tea at the Living Space (jam before cream, of course — we are in Cornwall after all).

There’s something about Watergate Bay’s warm, effortless hospitality that welcomes families, couples and furry companions in equal measure. It caters to every mood, from adrenalin-filled activities to restorative bliss. Though a visit with kids and dogs shifts the rhythm, the balance between grown-up indulgence and family fun is mastered here.

As we left, bundled up and sandy-haired with a happily exhausted dog in tow, I was already calculating when we could return for another wave-filled getaway.
