The Oceanfront Terrace Suites on the ground floor are wheelchair accessible, with plenty of space to move around. There is an elevator in the villa, but not all the common areas are accessible, including the pool and beach. San Pedro itself is a challenging city for those with mobility concerns as sidewalks can be uneven and/or cobbled.

Please note

Influxes of sargassum, a floating seaweed with a strong odor, can hit the beaches on Ambergris Caye from June through September. The beaches are cleared daily, but it’s something to be aware of if you visit during these months.

All six suites at Villa Abrazos are heavenly, but the Oceanfront Terrace Suites win out thanks to their sea views and direct access to the pool.

Poolside

An arching pool stretches the width of Villa Abrazos, with plenty of space for every guest to swim laps without feeling crowded. But you’ll more likely want to ensconce yourself on one of the shaded loungers, spritz in hand, and enjoy the view.

Spa

Encompassing a steam room, treatment room and an ice bath, the spacious spa offers treatments using Icelandic Bioeffect products. The Belizean Sun Soother facial sounds like quite the skincare tonic after a hard day on the hammock. For self-care that ups the tempo, a gym is equipped with free weights, yoga equipment and cardio machines, and personal trainers can be arranged, on request.

Hotel restaurant

The same muted tones and mahogany beams that characterize the rest of the hotel frame the sea view at Villa Abrazos’s restaurant. The menu is international with Caribbean seasoning — prime cuts and fresh seafood paired with plantain and coconuts, and burgers dished alongside Belizean red snapper and shrimp ceviche. Weekly tapas nights and live saxophone sets keep things convivial.  

Hotel bar

Tucked beside the pool, the tiki-style bar serves cocktails till after sunset. The passionfruit martini is billed as the optimal lounging companion.

Breakfast is served 7am to 11am; lunch is 11am to 5pm; and dinner is 5pm to 9pm.

Off Sea Grape Drive, one of Ambergris Caye’s few roads, Villa Abrazos is set on San Pedro’s oceanward shoreline.

Planes

International flights arrive at Philip SW Goldson International Airport (PGIA) in Belize City. From there, 15-minute ‘puddle jumper’ flights with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air take you to San Pedro Airport. The hotel has a private taxi for onward transfers, which are included in the room rate.

Automobiles

The hotel has free parking directly beside its front entrance.

Other

There’s a water taxi that runs from Belize Marine Terminal in Belize City to San Pedro, taking around an hour and a half. Private helicopter transfers can also be arranged from PGIA to San Pedro. The trip takes 15–30 minutes, depending on whether you want to take a scenic route over the reef.

Worth getting out of bed for

Work off your breakfast by borrowing one of the hotel’s bikes and heading out to explore San Pedro’s colorful cobbled streets. If pedaling’s not your thing, take your golf cart instead and head to Secret Beach in the north of the island. Its shallow waters are clear of seasonal sargassum and it’s strung with beach bars that encourage lingering.  

But on an island like Ambergris Caye, the place to be is really on — or in — the water. Paddleboards and kayaks are both available to borrow at Villa Abrazos. You can explore the reefs of Hol Chan Marine Reserve and come nose-to-nose with reef sharks and turtles with a private snorkeling guide. Experienced scuba divers won’t want to miss the Great Blue Hole, a natural sinkhole that’s home to sharks and rays – you can take a boat or helicopter tour if you prefer to view it from above. Xsite Belize runs catamaran trips where you can try spear-fishing before snacking on chef-prepared ceviche, as well as sunset dinner sailings.  

Local restaurants

A 10-minute stroll (or five-minute golf cart trip) from Villa Abrazos, you’ll find Gonzalo & The Princess, where Mayan-influenced dishes are paired with equally spicy cocktails in a moodily lit dining room. For big views and standout steaks, head a little farther north to Rain where 360-degree panoramas are soundtracked by live music.  

Local cafés

You won’t even have to get out of your golf cart at Coffee de los Mayos, just down Sea Grape Drive — just pick up your cold brew at the drive-through. 

Local bars

Palapa Bar & Grill is something of an island icon, sitting on stilts above the waves. Nab one of their inner tubes to float out on and they’ll send you a bucket of beers via a zipline.

‘Palatial’ is an overused adjective in travel reviews, but in the case of Villa Abrazos, it’s no exaggeration. The cathedral-like entrance hall and huge suites are hushed temples to minimalism, anointed by high ceilings and an abundance of windows. The result is far from austere — polished plaster walls play host to artworks from the owner’s private collection, including a couple of original Banksys.  

On an island so geared towards outdoor pursuits, it feels subversive to hole up in the villa’s sumptuous spa, making it all the more decadent to do so. But venturing out of your impressive suite is worth it — especially for the villa’s seamless service. Sipping a hibiscus spritz in a hammock beside the superlative pool is a worthy way to let afternoon stretch into evening.
