A couple of tents have been adapted with roll-in showers, widened doorways and floor lights. There are also access ramps available for the lounge; but please note that there isn’t a pool lift and stepping-stone paths may be challenging if you use a wheelchair.

Location will determine your call: Lagoon Tents are quieter with tropics tickling their exteriors and sweet scenes as frogs leap between lily pads. Beach Tents have a close-to-the-sands advantage, but tend to be a little louder as they’re also nearer Catch Beach Club. Whichever area you land on, just be sure to secure yourself a tent with a private plunge pool — the Lagoon Pool Tented Suite is our front-runner.

Poolside

Most tents come with their own plunge pools, but if you're after more swimming space, the central pool (open 7am to 7pm) makes for a pretty place to settle. Its edges are flanked with sunloungers, parasols and tropical greenery, as well as an ice bath, hot tub and sauna.

Spa

The tented spa may be small, but its in-the-tropics setting is big on serenity. Massages turn to traditional Thai practices and organic products to heal in its solitary treatment room; a sauna, hot tub and ice bath bolster this healing spot's appeal.

Packing tips

Cash is customary at Phuket’s storied night markets, so be sure to bring some baht in your bag.

Hotel restaurant

Catch Beach Club is a three-minute walk away and the camp’s main dining area. Buffet breakfasts of fresh fruit, yoghurts, homemade granola and à la carte additions set days up sweetly, and on Sundays its no-holds-barred brunch is so good, it gets booked up weeks in advance. Beachfront barbecues are hosted every Friday night, with classic Thai fare defining all-day lunch and dinner menus during the rest of the week. Light lunches are also available next door at The Lazy Coconut, and free shuttle rides to Twinpalms’ other two resorts makes dining around even easier. 

Hotel bar

All manner of cocktails can be made at The Lazy Coconut, delivered straight to your sunlounger and backed by chilled DJ sets. Should you prefer your sips with a little more seclusion, the Tented Lounge is open 7am to 9pm for drinks overlooking the tropical garden’s lagoon.

Last orders

Breakfast at Catch is 7.30am–10.30am; its all-day menu then runs from noon until 10.30pm. Sunday brunch is noon–3pm, and Friday barbecues are 7pm–10pm. The Lazy Coconut is open daily from 10am–11pm.

Set back from Bang Tao’s bigger resorts, Twinpalms Tented Camp occupies a secluded stretch of sand along Phuket’s scenic west coast.

Planes

Phuket International Airport is a 25-minute drive away; private transfers can be arranged on request for an additional charge.

Automobiles

Free shuttles make rotating between resorts easy, but if you’d rather explore at your own pace a car will come in handy. There’s free parking on-site, but spaces are somewhat limited so it’s worth calling ahead to check availability.

Worth getting out of bed for

There's a host of activities at Twinpalms Tented Camp, but schedules are as fluid as your waterfront setting round here. Morning meditation and yoga sessions salute the sunrise; mango tastings make for a sweet pastime, and crafters will find their peace in lotus-petal folding and chime hanging classes. Evenings close with campside gatherings; or, on Fridays, you can head to the Boat Avenue Night Market for a haggle-ridden roam. Private yacht tours to Ko Racha Yai and Koh Phi Phi can also be arranged, should the siren song to snorkel and scuba dive prove strong.

Local restaurants

The camp’s sister resorts, Surin Beach and MontAzure, have a host of lauded eateries. But if you’re after a more authentic taste of local fare, beloved Blu Wave Bistro is a 10-minute walk away and serves its made-to-order fish and traditional Thai classics along Bang Tao’s beachfront. Reaching Kruvit Raft includes a 20-minute drive and five-minute boat ride from Laem Hin Pier, but this floating restaurant is worth the effort. Family owned and originally set-up as a basic feeding spot for local maritime workers, it now comes Michelin recommended with seafood so fresh it's still swimming when you order.

Once upon a time, Bang Tao’s tin-rich fortunes lay beneath the ground. These days, the draw is rather more above it — and adults-only Twinpalms Tented Camp shows this well-mined coastline still has a lesser-known gem.

Phuket frequenters may well recognise the name, courtesy of its beloved sister resorts, Twinpalms Surin Beach and MontAzure. But the hotelier’s latest venture marks a turn in direction, with an intimate collection of sumptuous tents freckling a quieter spot on this storied stretch of sand. Each canvas-clad structure comes well-appointed with butter-soft beds, rainfall showers and all the required modcons — most also have their own plunge pools. Saunter barefoot between a bigger bathing spot set back in the tropics for lounging and laps, and the hotel’s beach club and provenance-proud restaurant. Free shuttles can ferry you between Twinpalms’ trio of award-winning resorts, when you want to explore other equally polished dining spots — just be sure to make a date back at base with Friday night’s beach barbecue.
