Setting

By the Wey

Hidden down a quiet lane along the River Wey, The Ragged Robin is a stay as sweet as the flower it’s named for. At this pub with rooms, the latter delights with its dream-inducing hues, butter-soft beds and Surrey-framing sash windows. And downstairs, the former fills with Godalming’s locals and their pups, chatting over steaming Sunday roasts and perfectly pulled pints.

The Ragged Robin’s restaurant is the hotel’s beating heart, with its soul-soothing menu of seasonal classics and rustic, fire-warmed setting. Hotel bar

The lure of the pub is strong wherever, but with this bar’s easy access from its adjoining restaurant, an evening tipple has never felt quite so tempting. GU7 3BX
United Kingdom

The Ragged Robin sits along the River Wey in the small town of Godalming, just southwest of London in Surrey.

Planes

Heathrow and Gatwick are your nearest international airports, both between 45 minutes to an hour away by car; or from Gatwick, you can hop on a train straight to Guildford, which is a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Trains

Godalming is your nearest station, with direct routes to Guildford, Haslemere, Portsmouth Harbour and Southampton Central. If you're heading into London, you’ll need to catch a connecting train to Waterloo from Guildford’s central station.

Automobiles

Trains are a reliable way to get into London, but if you’re planning on exploring Surrey’s arcadian ends, a set of wheels will be essential. There’s free parking opposite the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

The Ragged Robin puts you a stroll from Godalming’s high street, with independent boutiques and historic architecture as its adorning residents. The Godalming Museum is filled with crafted curios like paintings and ceramics, and seasonal events often tout a rotating schedule of open-air concerts, wine tastings and artisan-led workshops (should you be inspired).

If you’d rather take in Surrey's more pastoral scenery, taled hiking trails wrap around Devil’s Punch Bowl; and for relaxed rambles, the 115-hectare Flashes nature reserve and Winkworth Arboretum are idyllic alternatives.

Local restaurants

Tiring of pubs isn’t possible for most Brits, but if you're packed with pints and pork scratchings, our next stop would be Piazza Firenze. This Italian restaurant sits in a restored Tudor building, and though its façade feels distinctly English, menus are assuredly Tuscan with hand-rolled pasta and wood-fired pizzas. For elevated European classics, smart-casual Acorn Godalming is well-worth its legendary status.

Local cafés

Every ingredient used in Café Mila’s health-kick cuisine is sourced from Surrey’s network of sustainable suppliers and served in an airy hangout. There’s a courtyard outside, and yoga studio upstairs for when the caffeine’s worked its magic.

Local bars

Craft cocktails, locally made wines and artisan ales come paired with moreish small plates and a convivial atmosphere at The Rose and Crown on Mill Lane.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this homey hotel in Godalming and polished off their bottles of local brews, a full account of their quintessentially British break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Ragged Robin in Surrey…

Pubs have long been a compelling component to this country's culture, and for good reason — at-ease atmospheres, gravy-laden Sunday lunches and crackling fireplaces are all part of their enticing pull. But beyond that, they’re spaces rooted firmly in community. And at The Ragged Robin, that pride of place is weaved into every cosy corner.

Naturally, the restaurant is this boutique hotel’s hub, and once you've sampled its menu of locally sourced, seasonal fare you’ll soon see why locals love it quite so much. But head upstairs, and you’ll find a space that soothes the soul almost as much as a crisp pint of Shere Drop. Serene colour palettes and bespoke furnishings make sure rest comes easy, and wake-up calls are courtesy of the River Wey’s singing birdlife. If you can pull yourself from this ensconcing space, the Surrey Hills and Godalming are on your doorstep for all-English excursions.
