Style

Cecconi’s and chill

Setting

Street-art central

The Soho House group’s Redchurch Townhouse may look discreet and diminutive, but there’s more to this stylish Shoreditch stay than its mostly-Cecconi’s façade. There are more bedrooms than at big sister Shoreditch House around the corner, but there’s no sibling rivalry: Soho House members and friends staying at Redchurch Townhouse have full access to the warehouse, workspace and everything in between – handy, since it’s just steps away. The address is one of Shoreditch’s finest, with independent boutiques, espresso bars and even a pasta purveyor ensuring all your souvenir shopping is covered.
Please note, if you are not a Soho House member, you have the option to add a 12-month Soho Friends membership to your booking for £100. Public rates are also available.

Our favourite rooms

Redchurch Townhouse may be in a big city, where square-footage is always at a premium, but Room 33 has more than enough space to swing a (cool) cat.

Members and friends of Soho House staying at Redchurch Townhouse can head over to Shoreditch House’s heated rooftop pool (of red-striped-sunlounger fame).

Spa

There’s no spa, but members and freinds will be able to access the one around the corner at Shoreditch House.

Packing tips

A spray can for some impromptu graffiti, but save suitcase (or hipster-approved shopping-trolley) space for your Redchurch Street haul – the boutique-lined thoroughfare was once officially named the best shopping destination in the world.

Sustainability efforts

It’s reassuring to know that Soho House are working to deliver an environmental impact strategy across their sites. With 2030 goals set to enhance and standardise recycling programmes and responsible food-waste management at every outpost of the member’s club globally. They also work with local suppliers selected for their like-minded responsibility. In the kitchen, there’s scrutiny around how Soho House sources coffee, cocoa and palm oil, as well as sustainable seafood and responsibly reared meat. Expect greater choice of meat-free dishes and seasonal ingredients whenever practical. Measures to assess Soho House’s carbon footprint and reduce emissions are ongoing.

Hotel restaurant

Address
Redchurch Townhouse
25-27 Whitby Street
London
E1 6JU
United Kingdom

As the name hints at, the hotel is on Redchurch Street in trendy east London ’hood, Shoreditch.

Planes

The various airports that surround the capital are all options for guests flying in – the closest is London City, a half-hour drive away. From Heathrow, the journey should take around an hour. Reception will be able to assist with transfers – or you can hop on the shiny new Elizabeth line via Paddington to Liverpool Street, which is a 10-minute walk away from the Townhouse.

Trains

Rail hubs including King’s Cross St Pancras and Liverpool Street are nearby; Eurostar arrivals disembarking the former can expect a 20-minute onward journey. Shoreditch High Street station is over the road, for London Overground access to other parts of the East End and, in the opposite direction, Richmond.

Automobiles

You won’t need wheels to get around Shoreditch, Hoxton, Spitalfields and Whitechapel; plus, the address skirts close to the congestion-charge zone. If you have come by car, you can stash it away half a mile from the hotel at Broadgate Tower.

Worth getting out of bed for

Watch street artists at work in and around your new neighbourhood, or book on to an official tour if you’re feeling especially studious. Fans of shopping stalls and street food will enjoy strolls over to Spitalfields, Columbia Road (on Sundays) and Broadway Market (on Saturdays). For green space, Victoria Park has been giving Londoners additional oxygen for 175 years now. And if you’ve always wondered how the average British household has evolved over the decades, the Museum of the Home has the historic interiors for you.

Local restaurants

Brat is a stellar modern British restaurant (does it get more anglophone than mutton chop with offal sausage and beans?) at the bottom of Redchurch Street. For more plates that will make you reconsider British food (if you thought it was all beige), head around the corner to Lyle’s. Smoking Goat, also just down the road, makes a convincing case for Thai barbecues; and Manteca on Curtain Road more than masters the art of pasta.

Local cafés

Breakfast at Dishoom (specifically: the bacon naans) would be on most Londoners’ must-eat list of edible wisdom to impart – there’s a branch steps away on Boundary Street. New Zealand import Allpress is the caffeinating destination for flat-white fans.

Local bars

Shoreditch is home to some of London’s rowdiest nightlife and hot spots within stumbling-home distance include the Boundary rooftop and Callooh Callay; and for a good old British pub, the Owl & the Pussycat is calling.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique hotel in east London and unpacked their skinny jeans and correspondent shoes, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Redchurch Townhouse in Shoreditch…

Small but perfectly formed Redchurch Townhouse is the perfect pad for anyone hoping to feel like an honorary Londoner on their visit to the capital, especially if you want to adopt one of its most popular postcodes. Shoreditch has been transformed over the past 15 years and Redchurch Street is now one of its bougiest addresses. The townhouse has bedrooms that are kitted out in the brand’s classic aesthetic (ikat cushions, velvet sofas, white-tiled bathrooms and statement beds), plus a Cecconi’s serving every Soho House staple, from picantes to stone-baked pizzas. There’s also a cosy Soho Friends workspace next door.

For everything else, members and friends of Soho House can head around the corner to former tea warehouse Shoreditch House, now a workspace slash gym, spa, club and general hanging-out hub, including somewhere you can catch spur-of-the-moment sets by artists such as Janet Jackson (yes, this happened recently). The heated rooftop pool has a prime view of London’s absurdly named skyscrapers, including the Gherkin and the Cheese Grater. Time for some work, but mostly all play.
