Our favourite rooms

Size is the main differentiator between The Hoxton, Holborn’s rooms — if packing light is not the plan, opt for a Roomy or Biggy. From the rooms at the rear of the hotel, you can catch a glimpse of the London Eye.

There’s no spa, but the hotel can arrange a day pass for a local gym for an extra charge.

Sustainability efforts

The Hoxton, Holborn avoids single-use plastic. At the restaurant, monthly food waste is tracked and targeted for reduction, and a quarter of the menu’s seasonal dishes are plant-based. The hotel supports London-based homelessness charity Shelter From The Storm, and partners with a local school to allow students to visit and learn about how a hotel operates.

Food and Drink

Top Table

For dinner and a show, snag a scalloped banquette with a view of the open kitchen.

Dress Code

Lean into the bistro in Le Marais vibe with vintage blazers, ballet flats and a bold lip.

Hotel restaurant

At warmly lit bistro Rondo, seasonal menus are full of bold flavours and thoughtfully sourced British produce, pulling from head chef Tristan Downes’ close-knit network of suppliers in London and beyond. All of which, we’d say, warrants an exploration of the impressive wine list, too.

Breakfast at Rondo is just as indulgent — the n’duja scrambled eggs are hard to beat, but there’s stiff competition from the fresh cinnamon buns, superfood-packed bowls and proper full English.

Hotel bar

During the day, the Lobby Bar is a cosy place to nurse a Cornish-roasted craft coffee among co-working Londoners. When the laptop crowd disperses, it’s time to make a dent in the cocktail list, which puts a cool spin on the classics. A dirty samphire martini or orange wine old fashioned demands top-tier grazing, and the bar delivers with Neal’s Yard cheeseboards, London-cured charcuterie and seasonal brioche sandwiches. Keep an eye out for weekend events — Friday and Saturday nights are often dialled up by live DJ sets.

Last orders

Breakfast is served daily at Rondo from 7am to 11am; the all-day menu is served from noon to 10.30pm, Monday to Saturday. The Lobby Bar is open 7am to 10.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

Room service

You can order up to your room from 7am to 10pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

At The Hoxton, Holborn, you’re sandwiched between a lineup of London’s cultural heavyweights. The British Museum is a five-minute walk away, and the National Gallery under 20. The glowing marquees of the West End are in easy reach, as is Soho, with its perennially cool nightlife. Stroll south to Covent Garden, whether for a Royal Opera House trip or to chart the cobblestoned warren of boutiques around Seven Dials and Neal’s Yard. Heading north to Bloomsbury, there are leafy squares to stroll and blue plaques to spot. Stick with the literary theme at the Charles Dickens Museum, set in the townhouse where Oliver Twist was written. Staying in Holborn, historic square Lincoln’s Inn Fields makes a sweet spot for a picnic. On the corner, you’ll find Sir John Soane’s Museum, set in the radical architect’s impressive 19th-century home and preserved as it was in his day.

Local restaurants

A classic of the London coffee and brunch scene, Caravan brings together bold and wholesome dishes from around the world, with staples including jalapeño cornbread, Korean-style fried chicken and harissa baked eggs — your nearest outpost is in Covent Garden. Head towards Bloomsbury to family-run Abeno, where the traditional okonomiyaki are prepared in front of you on the teppan. When you're hungry but not sure what for, Seven Dials Market will either be heaven or make things even harder — across the two-storey food hall, you’ll have a host of indie spots to choose between, serving international temptations from tacos and ramen to New York-style slices.

Local cafés

For craft coffee on your doorstep, head to the Holborn outpost of Hackney-based specialty roastery Flying Horse. Hanging baskets and green-striped awning set the feel-good tone at Fast Break, a friendly neighbourhood favourite known for its faultless fry-ups.

Local bars

Passionate but unpretentious, Noble Rot needs no introduction to London’s wine lovers. Set in a storied Bloomsbury townhouse, the bar pairs an exquisite wine list with French-accented small plates (for a full feast, book a table at the restaurant). An heirloom of the capital’s Eighties nightlife, basement café-bar Freud is still going strong with inventive cocktails scrawled on a blackboard and rotating art exhibitions brightening the concrete walls.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this in-the-loop hotel in London and unpacked their theatre programmes and art-print postcards, a full account of their thick-of-things city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Hoxton, Holborn…

Historically, the building that The Hoxton, Holborn calls home has been put to work. Past incarnations of this central London spot include a factory for the cutting-edge inventor of the hand-cranked knife sharpener and a mid-century telephone exchange.

These days, interiors still lean industrial (in a comfortable, chestnut leather and artfully exposed metalwork sort of way) but the atmosphere is, happily, far less industrious. For starters, it's hard to keep your nose to the grindstone with the West End and Covent Garden a short walk away, tempting you out to play. Though the lobby is equipped for co-working, those out-sized sofas are ideally suited to mellow mornings plotting matinees and museum trips. After a day spent conquering the capital, a leisurely bistro dinner and early to bed sounds sensible — until you’re snared by the open-plan buzz of this sociable city stay, ordering old fashioneds at the bar. The building might have downed tools long ago, but the folks here still know how to manufacture a good time.
