Top Table

Breakfast is served at a communal, polished-wood table. When it’s time for aperitivi, load your plate at the table, then find a pleasing perch in the lounge where you can graze and converse in comfort.

Dress Code

Think dinner at a friend’s house: a collared shirt for Mr Smith – statement jewellery and a dress or rise-to-the-occasion top and trousers for Mrs Smith.

Hotel restaurant

Sunken within the palazzo’s original stone walls, the dining room is where breakfast and evening aperitivi are served. You can see through a hatch into the kitchen, where a buffet breakfast of freshly baked bread and pastries, cold meats, cheese, fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereals is prepared. Bread, preserves, yogurt and ricotta are all homemade. At cocktail hour, cloches of carved pecorino and platters of antipasti are served alongside drinks, for guests to enjoy together.

Via Giuseppe Rovelli, 28
Como
22100
Italy

Palazzo Albricci Peregrini is in Como’s old town, on the namesake lake’s southern shores in northern Italy.

Planes

Milan Malpensa is the nearest airport, a 45-minute drive away; the hotel can arrange transfers from €140 each way. Milan Linate airport is only 15 minutes further.

Trains

Como San Giovanni station is only a kilometre from the palazzo, on the Milan to Zurich mainline. The hotel will happily book you a taxi (which should cost around €15–20.

Automobiles

The palazzo’s in a limited traffic zone, but it’s fine to drive up to unload and load your luggage. The hotel can give you a parking card for access to a car park just 600m away (€20 a day). Como’s medieval lanes are interestingly narrow, making airport transfers and getting around the lakeside towns by boat much more appealing.

Other

Como Heliport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel. Navigazione Laghi has official timetables for lake transfers by boat.

Worth getting out of bed for

Como town is at the south-westernmost point of Lake Como. There are plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants to discover in Como itself, or explore further afield afloat, with a boat trip to admire its waterfront mansions (hello, Casa Clooney) and dine at its lake-edge ristoranti.

You may recognise Villa del Balbianello from its cameo role in Bond movie Casino Royale: stroll the gardens, soak up the lake views, or take a guided tour. Ask the hotel to book a boat trip to Bellagio, Menaggio or Varenna. For views over the lake with an amazing Alpine backdrop, take the funicular from Brunate up to the Pissarottino FountainYou can’t help but notice the decorative domes of Como Cathedral, a mesmerising melange of Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic architecture. Go for the stained glass and intricate masonry, stay for the vaulted ceilings and glut of Renaissance paintings.

Local restaurants

For a memorably moreish lunch, dine on the terrace overlooking the lake at Il Gatto Nero, which serves course upon course of seasonal Italian fare, worth lingering over. As you might imagine, La Tana dei Pescatori is a culinary temple to fish and seafood in Como old town that’s just right for a laid-back supper. For a special occasion, the palazzo setting at Michelin-starred I Tigli in Theoria is as impressive as the haute cuisine whipped up by chef Franco Caffara and team. Dishes such as fillet-beef tartare, oyster risotto and Calabrian black pork make the à la carte menu a culinary wonder.

Local bars

Soaringly ceilinged Fresco Cocktail Shop is an elegant den of mixology with a broad menu of concoctions.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this old-town hotel in Italy and unpacked their silk scarves and olive-wood bowls, a full account of their lakeside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Palazzo Albricci Peregrini in Como...

Palazzo Albricci Peregrini is contradictory in all the right places. It’s a peaceful retreat, worthy of the term ‘bolthole’ – yet, when it’s time to venture out, you’re already at the heart of the old town. Then there’s the heady mix of ancient and modern. The palazzo dates from the 15th century, as the exposed wooden beams, restored stone floors and tranquil courtyard will testify. Yet there’s a contemporary feel to rooms, with simple soft furnishings, polished concrete and battered leather sofas. The welcome at this family-run hotel is also modern… There are only six rooms, so it’s really more like staying with friends. Max and Lidia will put on a tempting spread for breakfast, advise you on trips out, lend you a bicycle – they can even arrange cookery lessons in the palazzo kitchen. And, come cocktail hour, a daily invitation to enjoy antipasti and aperitivi in the dining room is a sociable tradition we can get on board with. Saluti!
