Worth getting out of bed for
Start with what’s right in front of you: see why Alibi restaurant is the latest hot ticket in town; chill out at laidback Lo Lounge (aka the lobby); make the most of all the on-the-house hotel perks. Wander around the acclaimed Art Gallery of NSW on Art Gallery Road. Catch a show by Red Line Productions at the Old Fitz Theatre, or explore the beautiful Botanic Gardens on Mrs Macquaries Road. It would be rude not to admire – and cross or climb – Sydney Harbour Bridge, the world’s largest steel arch bridge, built in 1932.
Head to Hills Bros at 5 Martin Place for café food with healthy Asian and Latin American leanings; diverse dishes to try include adventurous toasties, achiote chicken tacos, brown-rice congee, and banana, peanut and espresso bread served with salted-caramel butter. Take your taste buds on tour via Sydney’s George Street at Indu Dining, which serves vibrant food inspired by the rural and coastal villages of southern India and Sri Lanka. (The signature slow-cooked lamb is a highlight.) Candlelit Restaurant Hubert channels Gallic sophistication, offering lashings of champagne and elegant French fare with interesting twists: oeufs en gelée stars egg yolk, bonito jelly, trout roe and avruga; roasted snails come with Hubert XO sauce and a house-made baguette. Bravo.
Assembly Bar at 488 Kent Street has more trophies in its metaphorical awards cabinet than we’ve got bottles in our literal drinks cabinet. See why by visiting its low-key mezzanine space; signature libations include the candyfloss-topped Cotton Candy, the refreshing Sea Salt (fresh lime juice, agave ginger syrup, Ardbeg, Mezcal Amores, topped with Agave Ginger Cider) and the Red Fox: fresh-pressed watermelon juice, Stoli vodka, vanilla syrup, rose syrup, sparkling wine and a watermelon-slice garnish.
