Our favourite rooms

The three rooms are like sisters – they share the same features of local artwork, Mexican maximalism and traditional furnishings, yet all look distinctly different – and their sororal names come from the colloquial saying ‘si no es Chana, es Juana, y si no, su hermana’ (if it’s not one thing, it’s another). Chana feels like a Frida Kahlo-inspired fantasy with its striped walls, ornate metal mirror and fresh flowers; make Juana your love nest with its romantic rose-pink walls and sunrise-facing terrace, or sprawl out on Su Hermana’s marigold terrace, the guesthouse’s crowning jewel.

Packing tips

You’ll want to save some space in your suitcase: if you like anything you see at this guesthouse – the soap, artwork, textiles – you can buy it to take home with you as a keepsake of your storied stay.

Planes

Regional and US connections arrive at Querétaro Intercontinental Airport and Guanajuato International Airport; both are a 90-minute drive from the guesthouse and staff can arrange private transfers (from US$80 one-way).

Automobiles

There’s no need for a set of wheels in San Miguel de Allende – its storied streets are easily explored by foot, and taxis are readily available. If you plan to explore beyond the city by car, you can park on the street or at a nearby car park (for a discounted rate) during your stay.

Days in San Miguel de Allende can start with a hot-air balloon ride over the city and its surrounding countryside; staff at Mesón Hidalgo can help book this bucket-list activity. Swap sunrise for sun salutations at a local yoga studio, before popping into small galleries and browsing independent boutiques for home decor, artisan textiles and handmade clothing. El Charco del Ingenio is a cacti-carpeted nature reserve with other indigenous and endangered plants. You’ll also get your nature fix with a visit to a vineyard – Viñedos San Lucas lies on the city’s outskirts, and as well as wine tasting and tours, it has olive oil tastings, plus horse riding, and cycling trails with bikes for hire.

City-surveying Inside Cafe is a jack of all trades: this rooftop terrace delivers sun-kissed brunches, sunset cocktails and Asian-influenced dinners. Tacos get a plant-based makeover at locally loved Don Taco Tequila, where toppings include hibiscus flower, guacamole and spicy salsa. New Orleans-inspired Hank’s has been a cornerstone of the city’s culinary scene for decades; come for the Cajun spices, hearty portions and live music.

Local cafés

Jacques is a neighborhood favorite for falafel-packed pittas, fresh juices and healthy brunch options, served in a white-washed courtyard. Start your day at espresso bar Lavanda Café with chilaquiles and cappuccinos, plus other specialty brews.

Local bars

They might look like shots, but chupitos of mezcal are meant to be sipped, and you can do so at La Mezcalería, which also shakes this spirit up into herbaceous cocktails. Settle in with a tequila-based sundowner on the parasol-shaded rooftop at Quince, which overlooks the old town’s humming streets.

A vibrant microcosm of the city in which it resides, adults-only Mesón Hidalgo takes color cues from the surrounding San Miguel de Allende streets: a palette of prickly pear pink, marigold yellow and guava green characterizes this intimate guesthouse. And though designer-owner Laura Kirar has brought in contemporary style elements, this 17th-century casita keeps tradition at its core with exposed wooden beams, artisan fabrics and antique furnishings. These long-standing walls were first the home to a priest said to have miraculous healing powers, but today a different type of therapy takes place: retail. The guestrooms double as a showroom for Laura’s pieces, and downstairs you’ll find a curated boutique with all-female brands, such as Carla Fernández clothing and Xinú organic perfumes. And shopping ’til you drop becomes that much easier when your beautified bedroom (plus Juana’s hammock-toting patio or Su Hermana’s neighborhood-surveying rooftop terrace) is just upstairs, ready to catch you…
