Setting

Garden in the Grove

Reimagining an Eighties Miami abode, Mayfair House Hotel & Garden is back with a bang. The Coconut Grove hotel is in a quieter part of the city, away from the South Beach strip and close to Coral Gables, which is exactly as idyllic as it sounds. The remastering of Kenneth Treister’s beloved handiwork involved the addition of murals crafted by Caribbean artists, calypso rum bars on the roof and a grill that celebrates the Sonoran Desert out west. The guestrooms were designed as private residences, which means space, serenity and your own leafy balcony.

Hotel restaurant

It may come from the other side of the country, but Sonoran cuisine – from the namesake desert that spans Arizona, Southern California and parts of north-western Mexico – is the flavour of every day at the wood-fired Mayfair Grill. Food is also served at both bars, including Sipsip, which is a take on a South Florida fried-fish joint.

Hotel bar

Sipsip on the roof is a rum bar for Caribbean cocktails and Calypso music with a view of the bay. The Mayfair Grill extends out on to a bar beside the old fountain.

Last orders

Breakfast hours are 7am to 11am, then an all-day menu is served from noon until 10pm (Sunday to Thursday) and till 11pm Fridays and Saturdays. Sipsip serves food until 9pm.

United States

Mayfair House Hotel & Garden is in the Coconut Grove area of Miami, south of Miami Beach, close to Coral Gables and on the Biscayne Bay shore in the Sunshine State, Florida.

Trains

Miami’s international airport is a 20-minute drive from the hotel. Transfers start from $109 each way.

Automobiles

You can rely on taxi-hailing apps to get around the city and across to Miami Beach during your stay – but if you have brought wheels, you can keep them at the Cocowalk garage, over the street from the hotel. Valet parking with unlimited in and out privileges costs $42 a night.

Worth getting out of bed for

Mayfair House Hotel & Garden is in one of Miami’s oldest neighbourhoods, leafy Coconut Grove, famed for its sidewalk-café culture, chic boutiques, sailing clubs and green spaces, which include the Barnacle state park on the bay, with its very own mangrove forest, the Kenneth M Myers Bayside Park and the David Kennedy Park, where you can enjoy the views of Biscayne Bay over a game of beach volleyball. The team can arrange bicycle hire, highlight jogging trails and point you in the direction of the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, one for all the Renaissance-architecture fans out there. And if you’re a fan of the architecture you find yourself in, set off on a walking tour of Kenneth Treister’s other structural triumphs in the neighbourhood, which include the Mayfair Mall, Elizabeth Virrick Park and the Yacht Harbour condos. Coconut Grove has its own farmers’ market, held every Saturday from 10am until long after the cows have gone home (7pm).

Local restaurants

Helpfully bringing its acclaimed Greek food to Coconut Grove (its original outpost is a 15-minute drive north), Meraki may not be able to promise long life, but it can try by feeding you fresh seafood, dolmades and the purest olive oil. Mid-century Americana meets Brazilian design at the Key Club, a classic grill in the Grove; or swap Miami out entirely and head to the Amalfi Coast via Sapore di Mare.

Local cafés

You may be in Miami, but the aspiring New Yorker in you will love the brunch at Sadelle’s; Coral Bagels is another NYC-honouring breakfast spot.

Local bars

It’s impossible to be sad when there’s wine and tapas to be had at Happy Wine in the Grove on Bird Avenue; or if your endorphin release depends on tiki shacks and tartares, head to Monty’s Raw Bar, which has been serving up good times since 1969. Whatever your tipple (beer, wine, coffee), your thirst will be quenched at the local-approved Panther Coffee.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Mayfair House Hotel & Garden in Miami…

In Miami’s Caribbean corner, you know you’re going to have a good time – but if you’re looking for the bright lights of the South Beach strip, this may not be the right retreat for you. As with its London counterpart, Mayfair House Hotel & Garden is more concerned with the finer things in life. This refined residence has brought back to life a hotel designed by Florida artist and architect Kenneth Treister in the mid-Eighties, in a revival that has kept its ornate wooden front door and iconic archways, upcycling all the way. The fountain is now a seating area, with a bar hewn out of an old elevator shaft. The sunny courtyard and garden are packed out with plants, for a peaceful antidote to the colourful Coconut Grove streets outside. The spacious rooms almost all have a balcony, as well as more foliage, outdoor showers and walls painted a statement shade.

The neighbourhood was one of the first areas where people settled in the city – and it has a more pedestrian-friendly feel, not to mention a lush landscape that puts even the hotel’s abundant greenery to shame. Coconut Grove’s Caribbean heritage is celebrated with free-flowing rum and fried fish up on the roof. Miami’s famous party scene is alive and well-heeled.
