Worth getting out of bed for

Cuban culture is infused into the streets of Little Havana. Start with a wander down Calle Ocho, where a clutch of cafés, restaurants, family-run shops and street art induct out-of-towners into local life. If you’re looking to learn more about this district’s Latino heritage, art galleries such as the Cubaocho Art & Research Center, Artefactus Cultural Project and the Little Havana Cultural Arts Center are your thought-provoking pitstops.

But lessons aren’t limited to exhibitions in this part of Miami, for traditions run down Cuban Memorial Boulevard, too, where dedicated monuments line the streets and Máximo Gómez Park — named for the former military leader — fills with the sound of salsa and residents rivalling over ongoing games of dominoes. Back at the hotel, check the lobby’s schedules as there’s a timetable of live events held in the courtyard throughout the year.

Local restaurants

Calle Ocho calls all Cuban cuisine fiends for its abundance of authentic eateries — and among the list of honorees is Old’s Havana. This retro restaurant is kitted out with an alfresco terrace that stays alive with diners till midnight, sustained solely on pork-packed sandwiches, bean-based stews and cassava. Changing the tune, Lung Yai Thai Tapas draws in-the-know locals for its flavor-packed, Asian-inspired sharing plates; Skinny Louie makes Americans proud with its wagyu-based burgers, perfectly crisp fries and creamy shakes.

Local cafés

Queues aren’t uncommon at Sanguich Little Havana, where garlic-marinated meats form the moreish base of Cuba’s storied sandwich, and fresh-from-the-fryer croquetas are your sapid starters. If you’d rather a coffee before you start on the sandwiches, La Colada Gourmet roasts strong Cuban blends in over 20 different combinations.

Local bars

Miami institution the Ball and Chain has been hailing habitués for decades, and with a duo of stages that have hosted the likes of Billie Holiday and Count Basie, it’s no surprise why. Dancing is in this watering hole’s DNA, but if you need a little Dutch courage before you start to salsa, procrastinate over a rum cocktail (or two) from its lengthy list.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Rover Miami…

It’s hard to walk down Calle Ocho and not feel the infectious spirit of its community. Whether it’s the distant clack of dominoes from neighboring parks, upbeat tempos trailing out of nearby salsa bars or local chatter over cups of Cuban coffee, happenings are never far. And thankfully, The Rover Miami has landed along its central artery to bring the action even closer.

Interiors were crafted as a loving ode to Latino heritage, honoring this culture-rich district with paintings and photographs from native artisans. Rooms draw inspiration from traditional Cuban design, playing with art deco features and adding custom-made furnishings and cheery hues as their crowd-pleasing cierre. There isn’t a restaurant on-site, but with an abundance of local eateries (including plenty of sandwich shops) on your doorstep, it won’t be missed; and the alfresco courtyard hosts a rotating roster of live events for evenings when you’re hoping to mambo closer to home.
