Need to know

163, including two suites.

Check–Out

11am, but flexible, subject to availability. Earliest check-in, 3pm.

More details

Rates include an international buffet breakfast in the Sugar Club restaurant.

Also

The hotel has one room that's adapted for wheelchair users; however, a lack of accessibility around the Estate means that unfortunately we wouldn't recommend this hotel if you have mobility needs.

At the hotel

Croquet lawn, tennis, badminton and boules courts, games room and lounges, and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, air-conditioning, minibar, bathrobes, slippers and custom bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Decide now if ‘contemporary’ or ‘castle’ calls to you more; bedrooms are split between the more recently added Sugar Club and the historic Hill House, which is the more intimate of the two with just 16 bedrooms. For views across the Öresund Strait, opt for a Sugar Club Balcony room or Hill House Ocean View room. The Sugar Club Pool Deck rooms are closest to the laps-and-lounging action, and the Suite Sugar Parlour is ideal for families or friends in need of some extra space.

Poolside

There are three heated outdoor pools (open from 8am to 8pm, May to September) and one that’s unheated in the indoor spa; outside, flop onto floral-patterned loungers shaded by tasselled parasols as dry martinis magically work their way to you. The atmosphere amps up in the late afternoon as the DJ booths come alive beneath twinkling disco balls, with canopy-draped cabanas to retreat to overlooking the Öresund.

Spa

Robe-cocooned, you can pad across the Sugar Club’s wellness lounges in fluffy slippers, unwind in the sauna, by the indoor pool, or gather around chic copper wood-burning stoves. The Maryhill Health Club is open 24/7 if you’d like to squeeze in a workout between games of croquet or tennis.

Packing tips

Brush up on the rules of croquet ahead of your stay if you want to impress, and bring some lawn-appropriate shoes for navigating the grounds in style.

Also

Tennis racquets are provided when you rent out the courts, all you need bring is some friendly competition.

Pet‐friendly

Three rooms are available on request for well behaved dogs, for an additional charge of SEK350 a night, with plenty of space to stretch all four legs in the resort’s gardens and nearby coastline. See more pet-friendly hotels in Skåne.

Children

All ages are welcome (except in the spa and indoor pool which are for over-16s only), but this is more of a grown-up getaway.

Sustainability efforts

Taking a leaf out of parent company ESS Group’s green book, Maryhill Estate largely runs off renewable energy (with three geothermal-heated pools), carefully monitors and reduces waste and water consumption, and sources seasonal, organic ingredients from local producers for its restaurant. You’ll find electric-vehicle charging stations in the car park, and refillable dispensers in the bathrooms which are topped up with the hotel’s own Earth-kind products.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Out on the terrace when it’s warm, and by one of the fireplaces in winter (still preferably facing the sea).

Dress Code

It’s difficult to feel overdressed here, especially in the evenings. Come suited and booted, with a touch of sparkle.

Hotel restaurant

There are two; a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in the Sugar Club, and a more clandestine eatery that’s reminiscent of New York’s speakeasies over at Hill House. Seating is spread across patterned banquettes and velvet armchairs, and the lighting is kept dinner-party-low beneath glitzy chandeliers and fringed pendants at both restaurants. The estate’s CEO, Robert ‘Bobbo’ Nilsson, is an award-winning chef, so expect crowd-pleasing flavours throughout both menus without any fine dining stuffiness. Portions are generous and often served on sharing style platters at Sugar Club, such as whole fish and flatbreads grilled over the parrilla for the entire table to tuck into. Start with oysters and shrimp cocktails at Hill House, and save room for the cloudberry-topped crème caramel.

Hotel bar

Perfectly shaken martinis, champagne-based cocktails, and thoughtfully paired wines flow freely from the estate’s eight (yes, you read that correctly) bars. Leisurely brunchers bring their bloody marys out to sip by the pool, and espresso martinis keep late night chats going (and going).

Last orders

Breakfast hours are 7am until 10am (7.30am until 11am at weekends). Lunch at Sugar Club runs from 11.30am until 2.30pm (Monday to Friday); at Hill House (weekends only), it’s from noon till 2.30pm. Dinner at both restaurants is served from 5pm until 10pm.

Address
Maryhill Estate
Ålabodsvägen 193
Glumslöv
261 63
Sweden

Residing in rural Glumslöv near the fishing village of Ålabodarna, Maryhill Estate is wrapped up within rolling farmland along southern Sweden’s Skåne coastline.

Planes

Malmö airport is just 35 minutes by car from the hotel, with Copenhagen an hour’s drive away. You could also fly into Gothenburg, which is two-and-a-half hours by road to the north.

Trains

Copenhagen arrivals can take a shuttle (departing every 20 minutes) over the famous Øresund bridge to Malmö, with onward connections to Glumslöv via Landskrona. Transfers to and from Glumslöv train station take just five minutes, and can be booked with the hotel on request.

Automobiles

Skåne County is beautifully walkable, especially through the Glumslöv Nature Reserve which is on the hotel’s doorstep. If you’re planning to drive, rentals are generally more affordable on the Swedish side compared with Denmark (if you’re coming from Copenhagen, that is). There’s ample free parking once you arrive at the estate.

Worth getting out of bed for

Maryhill Estate is a true stay-and-play destination, with mallets, racquets, balls, bows and arrows in generous supply for croquet, tennis, badminton, boules and archery, plus two nearby golf courses at Landskrona and Vasatorps if you somehow manage to exhaust the garden games. A four-minute walk towards the coast brings you to the quaint fishing village of Ålabodarna, where locals go for wild swims off the bathing jetty and strolls along the shingle. Day trips to Malmö are within easy reach — put the city’s Form Design Center, with its Konstig-curated bookstore, on your list — and cross the Øresund Bridge (Nordic noir fans will recognise this iconic structure from The Bridge TV series) into Copenhagen.

Local restaurants

During the spring and summer months, dine on freshly caught seafood just steps from the strait at Ålabodarnas Hamnkrog, a locals’ favourite housed within an old fishing cabin along the harbourfront.

Local cafés

If you’re visiting Malmö’s Moderna Museet, stop by Kafé Sisko for smörrebröd and fika as you discuss the day’s art displays from bright orange benches.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this castle-turned-rural-playground in Skåne and unpacked their countryside attire and chess sets, a full account of their coastal escape will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Maryhill Estate in Sweden…

Sweetening the Skåne coastline with its elegant columns and manicured gardens, Maryhill Estate’s story begins somewhat like a Scandinavian fairytale. Starting life as Örenäs Castle, home to Sweden’s ‘sugar king’, confectioner Carl Tranchell, the estate eventually changed hands to the district governor August Anderberg, who renamed the castle ‘Mariehild’ (hence, Maryhill) in honour of his wife.

Still romantic to its core, the historic main building has since been blessed with a spirited younger sister — Sugar Club is where Stockholm’s in-crowd comes to recharge the batteries, and front-row faces from Copenhagen fashion week are extending the afterparty.

Outdoors, there’s plenty to keep you entertained, from poolside to courtside; indoors, pattern-rich, sumptuously upholstered spaces are as much a feast for the eyes as your camera lens. Plus, whichever building you decide to bed down in has been thoughtfully styled to feel like home sweet home.
