Style

Ravishingly retro retreat

Setting

East-coast Eden

There’s an air of old-school Miami about Malaquita Hotel Ibiza, a pristine retreat cocooned amid pines and palms on the island’s quieter northeast coast. It’s in the interiors’ muted pastels and mid-century touches; in daiquiris and dinner with a Caribbean spin by the sunny, striped-tile pool. But with warm staff ready to point you towards local markets, chiringuitos and calm, white-sand beaches, Malaquita is, at heart, a quintessentially Balearic bolthole.

Our favourite rooms

At Malaquita Hotel Ibiza, the Salbei Suite’s soothing, sage-green interiors and original mid-century pieces make it an especially seductive prospect.

Poolside

With its sunny yellow stripes, palm fronds and effortless retro glamour, Malaquita’s pool feels like a nod to one of Hollywood’s classic shots: Faye Dunaway poolside at the Beverly Hills Hotel the morning after her 1977 Oscar win. Malaquita’s modern redo is flanked by shaded daybeds, sunloungers, the bar and the restaurant, so if you don’t have a coveted statuette to pose with, you can sub in an Aperol spritz.

Spa

There’s no spa, but a local practitioner can be booked for massages in the hotel’s treatment room. Staff can also arrange sessions with a yoga teacher or personal trainer.

Packing tips

Beyond the beaches, you’ll find wooded coastal walks and hilltop churches on this side of the island — bring a water bottle and hard-wearing shoes if you’re up for exploring them.

Also

If you’ve fallen for your room’s Malin + Goetz products, score a candle from the hotel’s shop. But also, keep an eye on the bar and restaurant menu — the brand sometimes collabs on botanical cocktails and complexion-kind salads inspired by their scents.

Children

Over-11s are welcome. The Granat Suite sleeps up to four, with two little 'uns in a double sofa-bed.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Sitting under the thatched pagoda, you’ll have a timeout from the Ibizan sun but still be practically within toe-dipping distance of the pool.

Dress Code

Slip a kaftan over your swimwear and you’re set.

Hotel restaurant

Malaquita’s kitchen deftly blends classic Ibicenco flavours with Caribbean and South American influences — we're eyeing the crispy patacones (fried green plantains). There’s indoor seating, but it’s the type of sunny fare suited to long afternoons spent out on the terrace (or supine by the pool). Come evening, the restaurant gets a sultry makeover, the scene set by intimate lighting and the sound of the breeze in the palms.

Hotel bar

The alfresco bar will see you through from your morning coffee to revitalising post-swim juice and rum-spiked sundowner — the Malaquita signature cocktail blends rosemary-infused rum with basil syrup and lime, and the mocktails are equally inventive. There are a few spots to sit up at the bar; otherwise, mainlining cocktails from the comfort of your sunlounger is the move.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at the restaurant from 8.30am to 11.30 am; lunch from noon to 7pm, and dinner from 7pm to 11pm. The bar is open from 8.30am to 11.30pm.

Carrer del Mestral 3
S'Argamassa

Spain

Malaquita Hotel Ibiza is in S’Argamassa on the island’s mellow northeast coast, near laidback towns Santa Eulària and Es Canar and a short walk from two quiet beaches.

Planes

Malaquita is around a half-hour drive from Ibiza Airport. Staff can arrange one-way airport transfers from €80; you could also grab a white taxi from the rank outside the airport or call an Uber.

Automobiles

The hotel has a private carpark with 10 spaces, available on a first come, first served basis. Otherwise, there’s free street parking near the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

There are two sandy beaches within walking distance: Cala Pada in Santa Eulària and Cala Martina in Es Canar. The latter is especially quiet, and both have sheltered swimming spots and watersports options, too. From Cala Martina, you can strike out for a coastal walk to the town of Santa Eulària. Here, a small hill called Puig de Missa rises behind the town — wind your way up the trail from the seafront to the summit to soak in dreamy sea views and explore the 16th-century fortress-church that once protected islanders from pirate raids. Es Canar comes alive every Wednesday during the summer with the Punta Arabí Hippy Market, where it’s possible to hunt down handmade local crafts among the tie-dye and feathers.

Local restaurants

Stroll down to Sa Trenka for fresh local seafood served simply, right on the beach. Santa Marta, in nearby Santa Eulària, is a modern beachfront spot with polished Mediterranean menus, artful cocktails and brunch options that’d make a morning person of the most determined slugabed.

Local cafés

Head down to Cala Martina and you’ll find Chirincana, an old-school Balearic beach café that leans charmingly hippie-ish, with homemade pizzas and a passion for the humble chickpea.

Local bars

The Ibizan outpost of jet set-drawing Nikki Beach Club is a short walk away; book a cabana, break out your barely-there swimwear and spend a day subsisting on sushi and fruity signature cocktails to live DJ sets. Over in Es Canar, Esbirra Ibiza is a laidback local favourite for craft beer, with live music on some evenings.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this mellow hotel in the Balearics and unpacked their Hierbas liqueur and Havaianas, a full account of their island break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Malaquita Hotel Ibiza…

Malaquita Hotel Ibiza sidesteps the usual Ibizan hotel archetypes — it’s not a gleaming, all-white-everything resort, nor a post-party crashpad in Ibiza Town. On the island’s pine-scented northeast coast, where crowds thin and the BPM drops significantly, this picture-perfect stay is both intimate and entirely individual.

If anything, there are shades of the traditional Balearic guesthouse in the home-from-home atmosphere and personal service, and in the proximity to happily under-the-radar beaches and villages, too. But spend an afternoon amid the copious tropical flora of the pool area, spritzes materialising every so often at your sunlounger, and you’ll see this is a boldly modern boutique hideaway, with an eye for playfully retro design and Ibicenco cuisine remixed with Caribbean flavours. On this side of the island, you’re already a little off the beaten path — it makes sense that your hotel should be a mould-breaker, too.
