Setting

Allez Valais

From petite family farmhouse to an après pleasure pad, Le Crans takes chalet glamour to mountainous new heights. Inside, cut-no-corners designer Christophe Decarpentrie ascends in design-lovers' esteem with suites inspired by the world’s most beloved rocky ranges and plenty of cosseting crannies to curl-up in. Channel your inner 007 (god knows he loves the slopes) in the bar’s fireside alcove; go full faux-fur bombshell in the slinky, Michelin-star restaurant; or lose yourself (and your alter-ego) by hiding away in the intimate Alpine spa. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout make this a prime location for gazing over Crans-Montana’s pine-studded plains and jagged peaks, but we prefer our vistas from within the outdoor heated pool or through wine-goggles after a well-earned Valais vintage.

More details

Rates include an à la carte breakfast, and transfers to the city centre and ski lifts.

Also

It's no secret that old 007 loves an action-packed slope scene, but former Bond star Roger Moore, was equally fond of this Crans-Montana corner off-camera, spending most of his later years in a chalet 10 minutes west of Le Crans.

At the hotel

Spa, gym, cigar room, indoor and outdoor pools, free WiFi throughout. In rooms: free minibar, Dyson hairdryer, Alpine spring water on tap, Nespresso Coffee machine, tea selection, and Aesop toiletries.

Our favourite rooms

Fond of a bubble bath? The Oural Deluxe room features a big ol’ tub with heart-melting views over the mountains. For a tad more space, the Junior Suite Annapurna wows with its south-facing wraparound balcony (the largest of the lot, actually), but couples looking to dial up the romance should opt for the Junior Suite Dolomites, which is clad in pine wood and decorated in soul-soothing shades of forest greens.

Poolside

The heated outdoor pool is undoubtedly the hotel’s headliner, sunk into the snow with views toward the sawtooth peaks of the Valais. But, if you’d prefer to avoid the icy sprint outside (short though it may be), you can enjoy nature’s lot from the indoor pool, which is lined in Vietnamese green stone or the bubbling Jacuzzi; both benefit from floor-to-ceiling, mountain-framing windows.

Spa

Ease those ski-weary muscles at the hotel’s intimate Cinq Mondes spa, where grounding interiors of natural pine set the scene for age-defying facials, post-piste pummellings and a range of sculpting-and-smoothing aesthetic treatments to get you feeling (and looking) your best. There’s a fitness area with a running machine, exercise bike, cross trainer, and both free and cable weights for getting in shape the old-fashioned way, and a hammam and sauna to kick back in afterward.

Packing tips

Slope-appropriate attire (but chic enough for aprés), and a novel or two to keep you entertained while curled up beside the fire.

Also

Each floor of Le Crans is serviced by an elevator. Guests with mobility issues should opt for the Superior room, which features an accessible bathroom.

Pet‐friendly

Four-legged friends are welcome in all rooms, suites and apartments for CHF35 a night. See more pet-friendly hotels in Crans-Montana.

Children

Welcome. There’s a kids’ menu at the restaurant, and private, age-adapted ski lessons; and hiking tours can be arranged on request.

Top Table

On sunny days, head outside for breakfast with fluffy blankets on the terrace.

Dress Code

Go for classic winter glamour, faux furs and all.

Hotel restaurant

Panoramic views of the snowy surrounds set the scene at Le MontBlanc, the hotel’s formal restaurant, where white linens, candlelight and a baby-grand piano make for ultra romantic Alpine evenings. The menu is French to the core, albeit fashioned with seasonal Swiss produce, meat and seafood. Order the scallops and served-ceviche-style white-fish to start, then split the lobster and John Dory fish (trust us, you’ll want to taste them both). At the back of the restaurant, you’ll find LaTable d’Hôtes overlooking the open kitchen, where guests are guided through a specialised menu served in person by the chef.

Hotel bar

The cosy fire-side bar occupies its own alcove within the restaurant and boasts a fine selection of regional and international vintages. The hotel can organise wine tastings too, for those looking to get acquainted with their cellar collection in more detail. Otherwise, Le Cigare Lounge’s range of prestige stogies are all the more enjoyable when taken fireside, with an old fashioned in hand, comfortable in a snuggly armchair.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 7am to 10.30am, lunch from noon to 2.30pm and dinner from 7pm to 9.30pm with last orders at 9.15pm.

Room service

Order soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and desserts round-the-clock with a reduced menu available from 9.30pm to 7am.

You’ll find Le Crans at the tippy top of Crans-Montana Ski and Golf Resort, surrounded by snowy slopes, designer boutiques and dramatic, Alpine scenery.

Planes

Geneva airport is a two-hour drive from Le Crans with flights arriving from all over Europe. Transfers from here will set you back around CHF800 each way. Alternatively, Zurich International is three-and-a-half hours away by car.

Trains

Montana Station is the closest, just 10-minutes from the hotel, but international travellers may be better served by Sierre (a 20-minute drive away) where services from Geneva, Milan, Bern, Basel and Zurich pull in. Transfers can be arranged from either of these for CHF100 each way.

Automobiles

The hotel’s fleet of Mercedes will gladly shuttle you to and from the city centre or the ski-lifts anytime between 8.30am to 10pm, so wheels aren’t strictly necessary. If you must drive, make sure to purchase a Swiss motorway road tax vignette (sticker) to access the highways. At the hotel, there’s free underground parking for guests with two charging stations for electric cars.

Other

Private jets can land at nearby Sion airport, while choppers can touch down 10 minutes away in Chermignon Heliport.

Worth getting out of bed for

You don’t need to go far in order to hit the slopes. In fact, take a 30-second shuffle from Le Crans front door and you’ll be on-piste and ready to play; just ask the concierge to organise a ski or snowboard pass. Alternatively, guests can get stuck into snowshoeing, a guided hike undertaken in monster-size moon-boots, which, though it may seem like the easier option, is no mean feat. It’s not all snow, though, Crans-Montana delights in the summer with its Alpine florals and thick, lush greens. Hire a mountain bike and get exploring, or hike the snaking pathways of Grand bisse du Lens. Better still, do it on horseback – equestrian pursuits are a serious business in this neck of the woods. For those unperturbed by dizzying heights, there’s paragliding and a fair few mountains to scale while water-babies can take to Lake Grenon for a spot of wake-boarding, waterskiing or good old-fashioned pedaloing. Alaïa Bay is a non-negotiable for wave-breakers, the first artificial surfing wave pool of its kind in continental Europe with more than 8,300 square-metres of break space nestled within snowy peaks and vineyards. As it happens, there’s plenty of those too – sample their goods at the Château de Vaas, a charming old building with wine-dedicated exhibitions and a regional tasting bar, or book a Valais wine tour for a viticultural day trip. And don’t forget your souvenirs – from designer boutiques to old-fashioned perfumeries, Crans-Montana is one of the only ski resorts where shops are open all-year round.

Local restaurants

Glide on down to Viva Voce for pizza, pasta, powder-pink banquette seating and a soundtrack of live piano. The menu is plentiful, but we’d be ordering the marinated tuna tartare for starters; the mafaldine with truffle cream, mascarpone foam, mushrooms and fresh black truffle shavings for main; and a syrupy, rum-soaked baba topped with whipped cream to round it off. And you can’t leave Switzerland without getting drowsy on fondue; you’ll find one of the best at family-owned Le Mayen where gingham tablecloths, rustic wooden interiors and a gleefully gooey mix of Gruyère and Vacherin will fulfil all your fromage fantasies.

Local cafés

Café le Postillon is a soulful village spot right in the centre of Crans where you’ll find regulars flocking for their morning cappuccino or post-lunch apéritif.

Local bars

Prop up the bar at laidback Bodega, where Spanish beers and wines are accompanied by a menu of traditional tapas. If you’re in it for the après, Monki go hard – think neon lights, disco balls and all-night dancing. A happy medium can be found at Le Constellation where DJs and shots are tempered by fine wines from Valais and Corsica and a mellow but social terrace.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Le Crans in Switzerland

Le Crans hotel knows a thing or two about sweet spots – it’s far enough up Crans-Montana’s haut-plateau to afford great views, but not too far to feel remote; small enough to feel intimate, but large enough to house a restaurant and spa. And – thanks to Christophe Decarpentrie’s cut-no-corners design choices – chic enough to feel comfortably contemporary while staying true to the hotel’s traditional chalet-style roots. Rooms pay homage to the world’s most iconic mountain ranges and the cultures that surround them. In the Everest room, for example, bright textiles, carved mirrors and rich wood panelling, inlaid with colourful birds and exotic green gardens, evoke the detailed interiors of a maharaja’s palace; while the Dolomites dorm goes all-out with its use of pine wood and rustic plaid. Elsewhere, the spa’s high-tech treatments smooth and sculpt, the Michelin- star restaurant puts a seasonal, Swiss spin on haute-y French fare and the bar’s fireside alcove makes an exceptionally cosy spot from which to enjoy an old fashioned or two, but you’ll find the hotel’s real draw outside, where steam curls off the heated pool and a snow-capped string of peaks – from the Dufourspitze to Mont Blanc – spike the skyline beyond.
