Setting

Peaceful Pattaya Bay

Looking onto the Gulf of Thailand Mason Pattaya is a thoroughly modern beachfront beauty. Its ripe-for-romance villa suites are elegantly layered to allow ocean views wherever possible. This is a place for peace, privacy and contemporary interiors made strokeably sleek with local stone, coolly tiled floors and pale wood details. Alternate between hours spent shoreside on Jomtien’s powder-pale sands and time at the ray-catching rooftop pool, or recalibrating with sensuous treatments at the spa. Pattaya’s city lights offer plenty of distraction, but delectable surf and turf at the hotel bistro easily lures guests home for sunset-accompanied suppers on the terrace.

Top Table

Dine on the deck, ideally in time for sunset – otherwise, meals by candlelight under the stars are equally romantic.

Dress Code

Something sparkly to reflect the setting sun and bring a glow to cocktail hour. Tailored shorts and smart polos or light shirts are all Mr Smith needs.

Hotel restaurant

Zila Street Bistro & Bar serves Thai and international dishes all day long. The burgers are towering, the pad thai exquisitely fresh, and the service’s as slick as the polished wooden tables. Krok-A-Café Espresso Bar at the Sky Pool serves an all-day menu of light dishes and snacks, pizza included.

Hotel bar

Your choice of beachfront or poolside: on a raised deck above the sand, the Beachside Bar has high stools along its concrete counter and a handful of parasol-shaded tables for sea-soundtracked ice-cold beers, soft drinks and cocktails. On the rooftop, Krok-A-Café Espresso Bar is a coffee and cocktail specialist – ideal for sunset margaritas on the poolside sofas.

Worth getting out of bed for

Days on the silvery Gulf-lapped sands of Jomtien Beach are sure to dominate, broken up with time at Mason Spa and the rooftop pool. The soaringly skylined city of Pattaya is a short drive away.

Explore Bangsaray, a fishing village, down the coast, with its traditional wooden boats and peaceful atmosphere. Pattaya’s Floating Market is a lively riverside affair, for picking up fresh produce, fabrics and handmade crafts or simply to watch the world putt-putt along the water. If you don’t mind eyebrow-raisingly random statues with your ornamentally trimmed topiary, Nongnooch Tropical Garden is more tourist attraction than horticultural wonder, but all the more colourful for it. For an insight into Thai wines, you can taste the local vintages and tour the vines by tram at Silverlake Vineyard, next to Khao Chi Chan. A tribute to marvel at and an artistic feat to admire, Khao Chi Chan is home to a gigantic, gold-leaf-adorned carving of Buddha etched onto the marble cliff-face. If you like the thought of flinging yourself through jungle canopies, sign up for a little zip-lining with Flight of the Gibbon. And if you're going to be in Pattaya in December, don't miss Wonderfruit, a dazzling festival where all of the spectacular structures in its pop-up city are sustainably built.

Local restaurants

The Coffee Club at Terminal 21 shopping mall in Pattaya is a brightly lit den serving all-day brunch, including pancake stacks, eggs hollandaise, yoghurt and granola and copious coffee choices. The stained-glass-windowed dining room and surf-and-turf tasting menu of eye-catching European dishes at Café des Amis are deftly paired for a romantic night out to remember.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this contemporary coastal hotel near Pattaya and unpacked their stoneware and coconut soaps, a full account of their beach break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Mason in Thailand.

What might have begun as a bolt-on to your Bangkok trip could easily turn into the highlight of your Thai holiday… Mason, in Pattaya, is just two hours from the capital, with sleekly modern suites in a blissful beachfront spot worth the detour. Architect Vasu Virajsilp was inspired by the rock-carving community of Ang Sila, up the coast, to incorporate local stone into his design. But, carve it into the landscape he did not. Instead, the imposing architecture is boldly boxy, stacking contemporary villa suites, with a pool for each, to ensure peace, privacy and plenty of ocean views. Idling in resort is encouraged – and not just in the cosseted spa… Days on Jomtien’s sands come with creature comforts courtesy of the Beachside Bar, and hours at the rooftop infinity pool and café-bar are easily whiled away. And when the urge to venture out strikes, cosmopolitan Pattaya is on your doorstep.
