Setting

Northeastern estate

The picture of rural Mallorca, La Reserva Rotana is a bucolic boutique hotel set on a 17th-century estate. It’s wholesome in style and spirit: its turquoise shutters evoke the island's crystal-clear calas; its pine-carpeted grounds give way to a nine-hole golf course, and its outdoor pool beckons between tennis games and farm-fresh dining. It looks good as a postcard; even better as your next Balearic destination.

Our favourite rooms

La Reserva Rotana’s exteriors of sandy stonework and coolly contrasting aquamarine shutters are a classic take on Balearic design. Its farmhouse-style interiors are, too, and we’ll be soaking them up from a Junior Suite, where blue details, beamed ceilings and a hammock-toting terrace are reminders of your easy-breezy island locale.

Poolside

You’ll soon settle into a gentle rhythm of warming up on a lawn-set sunlounger, then cooling off in the outdoor pool, before flopping back down again to dry off under a pine tree; it’s a gentle cycle that’s hard to tire of.

A sweet tooth for sugar-dusted ensaimadas, sun-ripened fresh fruit and aperitifs at honey-hued golden hour.

Top Table

Out on the terrace never misses a beat.

Dress Code

Breezy Balearic — espadrille sandals, woven baskets, linen or cotton pieces.

Hotel restaurant

Flavourful, fresh-as-can-be ingredients, sourced from close-to-home farmers and fishermen, form the moreish foundations of Mediterranean dishes that are refined in palate and presentation. It’s not just the food that pays homage to the hotel’s island locale — stone arches, wooden beams and curated antiques and artwork nod to the restaurant’s Mallorquín roots.

Hotel bar

At the Terrace Bistro, you’ll find thirst-quenching spritzes and fusion light bites; but most palatable of all is perhaps its verdant countryside views.

Last orders

At the main restaurant, breakfast is from 8am to 11am; lunch is served from noon to 4pm, and dinner is between 7pm and 10pm. The Terrace Bistro serves from 11am to 8pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

There are two versions of La Reserva Rotana, both are equally tempting. The first is its sporty side: book a personal trainer for a cardio hit at the gym, sign up for a professional-coach-led tennis lesson with Rafa Nadal Academy (the hotel also partners with them for week-long sports camps) or perfect your par on its nine-hole golf course, which you’ll get unlimited access to as part of your stay.

In contrast, this Balearic bolthole also prizes rest and relaxation. The Vita Parcour area is fit for birdsong-soundtracked workouts, or you take a meditative stroll down its pine-clad trails. Gentle laps of the outdoor pool pre-empt detoxifying spells in the sauna, plus northeast Mallorca’s rugged beaches, such as Cala Ratjada and Cala Mesquida, are a 30-minute drive away for shoreside downtime.

Local restaurants

Terragust takes the concept of farm-to-table dining and runs with it: after a tour of its fruit groves and farmland, nab a table in the orchard for a tasting menu of organic produce and island flavours. Mediterranean plates with an Asian spin draw locals and visitors alike to Factoria Gastrobar’s square-facing terrace. Industrial-chic Can Lliro is a relaxed lunch spot for Mallorcan fare — cañas and croquetas rank high on the menu — alongside coffees, sandwiches and sweet treats.

Local cafés

Days that start at Sa Bakery Cafè begin very well indeed: bag one of its streetside tables for speciality brews, topping-heavy tostadas and other brunch favourites. At café-slash-boutique Ca Ses Cusses, you can fuel your browsing for condiments and ceramics with breakfast bites and caffeine-hit cappuccini

Local bars

Bar Vermut gives the humble vermuteria a modern makeover, with its signature pours, bright interiors and polished sharing bites.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this Balearic boutique hotel near Manacor and unpacked their golf clubs and tennis rackets, a full account of their bucolic break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside La Reserva Rotana in Mallorca…

La Reserva Rotana is a finca with flair: it’s awash with plenty of rustic charm passed down from its 17th-century heritage, but a welcome raft of mod-cons place this Mallorquín estate firmly in the now.

Honey-hued sandstone exteriors and shade-offering palm and pine trees set the scene for farmhouse-chic bedrooms with island-inspired interiors and period details. Settle in for unhurried afternoons by the alfresco pool or on the sunlounger-dotted lawn; the locally rooted restaurant and terrace-toting bistro are just as worthy hangout spots.

A little limbering up is required for the hotel's tennis court or nine-hole golf course, to which you’ll get unlimited access. And if you’d rather tee up days out on the isle, your in-the-know hosts can point you in the direction of nearby Manacor, the island’s northeastern coves and Palma’s boutiques and restaurants. There are Balearic temptations within easy reach, but the closest are found within La Reserva Rotana’s embrace.
