Setting

Atlantic-lapped Larache

We’re not in Puglia any more, Toto – instead, Lecce favourite La Fiermontina has found its way to the Atlantic Ocean, transplanting its glorious Italian glamour along the way. South of Tangier on Morocco’s west coast, La Fiermontina Ocean, opening in June, is a beach-front retreat just north of Larache – a holiday hotspot for Moroccans come summer, which, as yet, is untouched by international tourists (congratulations on your crowd-free coastal dunes). It’s set across a new resort and an old village, within a reserve, with more traditional hamlets nearby for a wholesome addition to your surfing and sunlounger snoozing – don’t be surprised if you’re invited in for lunch. Moroccan touches include Berber rugs, Atlas Mountain-sourced textiles and tea ceremonies, but it’s la dolce vita all the way.

La Fiermontina Ocean may sound Italian, but it’s actually all the way in Morocco, on the country’s Atlantic-lapped north-west coast, south of Tangier.

Planes

The nearest airport is a 50-mile drive north, in Tangier. Rabat and Casablanca, are a little further, 115 and 200 miles respectively. The hotel can arrange transfers on request.

Automobiles

If you’re coming to fly and flop in the resort, you won’t need wheels, but if you’re planning on seeing more of Morocco’s Atlantic coastline or visiting the city of Larache, a car will come in handy – there’s free valet parking at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

Since the hotel has the word ‘ocean’ in its appellation, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that watersports feature heavily on La Fiermontina Ocean’s activity agenda. There’s a surf school right on its shores, a beach club for long, lazy lunches if that sounds a little too active, and rides on horseback through the neighbouring olive groves and woodland. You’ll also be able to discover the benefits of argan oil (as it’s being massaged into your skin at the spa), join a yoga class and visit a neighbouring village – the locals are so friendly, they’ll probably invite you in for a snoop around their house and a meal with them. At Cadi’s House – a recreation of the family nonno’s home, with clan portraits from the 1930s and his now-antique phone – in the village of Dchier, guests can sign up for cookery classes.

Local restaurants

The resort is 40 minutes by car away from Larache, so it’s likely you’ll want to stay put within its sleek confines – if you have day-tripped north, expect the options available to be a little on the rustic side…

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside La Fiermontina Ocean in Larache…

If you thought La Fiermontina Ocean looks a little lost, you’d be right: the all-Italian implant arrives on Morocco’s Atlantic shores this summer, bringing a saccharine slice of la dolce vita along for the ride. Set in a several-acre reserve of olive groves, orchards and dunes on the as-yet-undiscovered north-west coast, the resort follows in the effortlessly chic footsteps of its older siblings in Puglia and Paris. The family-owned group’s latest hospitable foray is centred around the siblings’ grandfather, Cadi (which means ‘judge’) Thami Filali, whom their grandmother met in Morocco. They’ve recreated his house in the village of Dchier, so guests can admire the family portraits over a cookery class. The resort is within a national park, close to the villages of Tcharouah, Mezgalef and Dchier – for the most authentic experience, book a stay in a traditional stone house in one of the hamlets. You’ll also be able to experience local life in a village by hanging out at the café or getting mercilessly scrubbed clean in the hammam.
