Once a working estate and still in the Baracchi family's hands, Il Falconiere has landed gracefully between farm, vineyard and Michelin-starred retreat overlooking Cortona. The 17th-century villa is perched above the Valdichiana, surrounded by olive groves, cypress trees and rows of Sangiovese vines, with a winery, cookery school and spa giving you plenty of reasons to roost. Our favourite rooms

Rooms feel as though they've evolved with the estate rather than been designed all at once: timber-beamed ceilings, timeworn antiques, billowing linens and wide-open views of cypress-dotted hills. We'd opt for a Villa Scuderia Junior Suite for its terrace above the pool, or a Prestige Suite in Villa Borgo del Falco if you fancy a little extra privacy. Groups should opt for the Winery Master Suite, a three-bedroom hideaway above the winery with its own garden and a heated whirlpool overlooking the vineyards.

Poolside

There are two outdoor pools, so you can take your pick between sun-soaked laps with countryside views or a more tucked-away dip among the olive groves. The spa's heated indoor pool is on hand for cooler days, post-treatment floats or simply escaping the midday heat.

Spa

Thesan Spa (aptly named after the Etruscan goddess of dawn and rebirth) makes the most of its Tuscan surroundings, with a menu of treatments inspired by the estate's vineyards, olive groves and herb gardens. Alongside a sauna, Turkish bath and heated vitality pool, you'll find vinotherapy rituals harnessing the antioxidant power of grapes, vine leaves and wine, as well as nourishing face and body treatments that blend extra-virgin olive oil with Tuscan lavender and sea salt. The standout experience is the red wine bath: sink into a tub infused with Baracchi red wine extracts to soothe skin and boost circulation, while sipping a glass of the family's own vintage.

Packing tips

Leave a little space in your suitcase for a few bottles from the Baracchi cellar. Before then, you'll want linen sets for long lunches, comfortable shoes for exploring the estate and Cortona’s cobbled streets, and perhaps riding boots if a canter through the countryside appeals.

There’s no gym, but the hotel partners with a fitness centre 10 minutes away (available for an extra fee), or you can book a personal trainer to come to the estate instead.

Pet‐friendly

Il Falconiere is better suited to grown-up getaways, but children are welcome. Some suites can sleep up to four with the addition of a sofa-bed, and babysitting can be arranged for €40 an hour.

A vertical garden supplies the Michelin-starred kitchen just steps away, turning farm-to-table into something far more immediate — homegrown ingredients harvested daily and plated moments later. It’s part of a wider commitment to protecting the surrounding Tuscan landscape, from organic growing and biodiversity-conscious vineyards to thoughtful water use, with reusable water bottles provided in rooms to help cut down on plastic waste.

Hotel restaurant

Forget scouting for tables in Cortona: you've already landed the best one. Silvia Baracchi has been collecting Michelin stars here since 2002, serving polished Tuscan cooking in the estate's former lemon house — a soaring glass conservatory that feels a little like dining inside an aviary, which is only fitting for a hotel named after a bird of prey. The cooking is unmistakably Tuscan, but Silvia knows exactly when to leave tradition alone and when to give it a gentle nudge. You might start with coffee pici tangled with guanciale, broad beans and pecorino, move on to Sangiovese-crusted lamb or pigeon from a nearby farm, then finish with something built around whatever's ripening in the kitchen garden that week. Wash it all down with a bottle from the neighbouring Baracchi winery and you'll understand why venturing into town for dinner suddenly feels like rather a lot of effort. Come lunchtime, everyone gravitates to the terrace for its views across the Valdichiana towards the Val d'Orcia. 

Hotel bar

Named after the strawberry trees that blossom around the estate, Il Corbezzolo is somewhere you'll find yourself returning to between swims, before dinner or whenever the terrace is bathed in late-afternoon sun. Drinks can follow you almost anywhere, from the panoramic terrace overlooking the Valdichiana to a sunlounger by the pool or a quiet spot in the gardens. Start with a glass of the Baracchi family's own Metodo Classico or one of their Sangiovese reds, then move on to a classic Negroni or a spritz infused with estate-grown herbs.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at the restaurant from 7.30am to 10.30am; lunch from 1pm to 2.30pm, and dinner from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. At the Lounge Bar, lunch is served from 1pm to 3pm and dinner from 7.30pm to 10pm.

Among the rolling hills just outside Cortona in eastern Tuscany, Il Falconiere’s historic estate is 90 minutes from Florence and within easy reach of Umbria’s border.

Planes

Perugia Airport is a 45-minute drive away, Florence around 90 minutes, and Rome’s airports roughly three hours by car. Airport transfers can be arranged on request, with tailored quotes depending on the number of passengers, distance and vehicle required.

Trains

Camucia–Cortona and Terontola–Cortona are the nearest stations, a 10-and 15-minute drive from the hotel respectively. Regular Trenitalia services link both stations to Florence, Rome and other major Italian cities.

Automobiles

Cortona itself can easily be explored on foot, but having a car makes it far simpler to venture into the wider Tuscan countryside. There’s free private parking at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

Days at Il Falconiere naturally revolve around food and wine, and few experiences are more rewarding than joining Michelin-starred chef Silvia Baracchi for a hands-on cookery class. You'll learn traditional Tuscan recipes in the farmhouse kitchen before sitting down with fellow guests to enjoy your creations, which will be paired with wines from the family's own estate. Next door, Benedetto Baracchi leads wine tastings in the cellar, where you'll sample everything from sparkling Metodo Classico to bold reds and estate olive oil.  

Beyond the estate, the Renaissance streets, artisan shops and sun-drenched piazzas of Cortona, which captured hearts in Under the Tuscan Sun, are just minutes away. The surrounding countryside invites exploration on horseback, by e-bike or on foot along limestone ridges and panoramic hiking trails overlooking Lake Trasimeno and the Valdichiana. Golfers can tee off at nearby Antognolla Golf, and the hotel can also arrange gourmet picnics to fuel a leisurely afternoon among the vines. 

Local restaurants

With Silvia Baracchi's Michelin-starred restaurant at the heart of the estate, you'll be hard-pressed to justify dining elsewhere. But if you're tempted into Cortona for the evening, family-run Osteria del Teatro serves refined Tuscan classics in a characterful 16th-century setting, and nearby Ristorante La Loggetta has been welcoming diners for more than half a century with handmade pici, Chianina steaks and seasonal truffle dishes. Closer to home, La Locanda del Molino — Il Falconiere's charming sister restaurant, housed within a converted olive mill a 10-minute drive away — is the place for hearty Cortonese cooking set to the gentle soundtrack of the stream it sits on.

Long before Il Falconiere became one of Tuscany's defining wine-and-dine stays, it was simply home. Silvia Baracchi and her late husband Riccardo spent decades transforming their family estate, beginning with a restaurant in 1989 before gradually restoring its scattered farm buildings and villas, planting vineyards and olive groves, and turning a forgotten corner within striking distance of Cortona’s Etruscan walls into one of the region's food-first escapes. Even now, it feels remarkably personal. Silvia still leads the Michelin-starred kitchen, teaches cookery classes and has her say on everything from the hand-picked antiques to the table linens.  

Like the grounds, where a new vertical garden now feeds the restaurant just metres away, the concept continues to grow organically. Extended culinary programmes inviting guests to experience the estate much as the Baracchis always have: through the rhythms of the vineyard, kitchen and countryside.
