Surfer beach house

Right on Ocean Drive

Before the world-famous clubs and the detox scene, Miami was all about one thing: its seemingly endless stretches of beaches. Hotel Victor South Beach is returning to those roots, with its beachfront location, relaxed beach-house aesthetic and unpretentious pool. Of course, if you do want to join the fray, Ocean Drive is just out the front door.

At the hotel

Swimming pool, fitness room, spa treatment rooms. In rooms: flatscreen TV, iPod dock, Dean and Deluca minibar, bathrobes, Gilchrist and Soames toiletries, tea- and coffee-making facilities.

Our favourite rooms

Higher floor rooms overlooking the low-key pool have views straight out over the beach to the ocean, and many have balconies, so spring for one of those – like a spacious corner King Suite – if it fits your budget.

Located on the second storey terrace and looking out towards the ocean, the signature patterned-tile pool is surrounded by oversized sun beds, cabanas and chaise longues on which you can lounge away the day. A pool bar serves ice-cold beers and refreshing cocktails, but does not offer poolside service.

Packing tips

Walking and biking shoes; thanks to the hotel’s central location on Ocean Drive and bicycles available to borrow, you don’t even need a car to explore South Beach’s restaurants, beaches and shops when Hotel Victor is your home base.

Although the hotel doesn’t have an extensive spa, seven treatment rooms are available for massages and other basic treatments.

The hotel is aimed at adults, but children three and under can stay in parents’ rooms for free and older children can stay in an extra bed for $49 per night each. Bicycles and helmets are available for older children.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Make the most of South Beach’s prime people-watching from the sidewalk terrace.

Dress Code

Colourful swimsuits and breezy beachwear by day; your best dancing shoes by night.

Hotel restaurant

Start the day with a savoury crepe on the patio overlooking the beach at the Sugar Factory American Brasserie, an expansive bistro with a sweet tooth. Nosh on burgers and pizzas paired with a specialty cocktails such as the chocolatey marshmallow-tinged S'Mores martini. For lunch or dinner, Chef Kevin Chun wows seafood-lovers with creative Japanese fare at Sushi Couture – his only request: don't soak your sushi (much of the fish is imported daily from Japan) in soy sauce.

Hotel bar

In addition to the creative mixed cocktails at the Sugar Factory and Sushi Couture, the lobby bar is a lively spot for a cooling drink any time of day, and is a lively but relaxed scene that fits with the hotel’s surf-chic style.

Last orders

Sugar Factory is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7am to midnight (Monday–Wednesday) until 1am on Thursday and Sunday and until 2am on Friday and Saturday. Have lunch or dinner at Sushi Couture Mikassa 12 noon to 12 midnight.

Room service

The full restaurant menu is available in your room from 7am to 7pm.

The nearest airport is Miami International, about 30 minutes away. The best way to get to the hotel is by taxi ($40). The airport is an international hub, welcoming flights from London, New York and various other American cities.

The Omni Metromover station is the closest station – 15 minutes away by cab. It serves downtown Miami, from Omni to Brickell. The main Amtrak station is a 30-minute drive.

Roads can be congested in Miami and Hotel Victor’s central location means you don’t need one to explore South Beach, but hiring a car is the best way to explore the Keys or the northern suburbs. Valet parking is available for $35 a night plus tax.

Worth getting out of bed for

Once you've splashed in the pool and soaked up sun by the sea, it's time to head into town to check out Miami by land. The Design District is the hub for hot restaurants, cool boutiques and the best galleries. While you're there, check out the Bass Museum of Art (+1 305 673 7530) on Park Avenue. For a bit more fun on the water, call the Boucher Brothers, a water-centric company that can hook you up with boats, parasailing gear or rollerblades.

Local restaurants

If you’re looking for a hearty meal head on down three blocks from Hotel Victor to BLT Steak (+1 305 673 0044). Get what you came for, a mouth-watering piece of meat or dabble at the raw bar in a light and airy space that doesn’t feel quite like your typical steakhouse. Head further down Collins Avenue to 1826 Restaurant & Lounge, the interior design is reason enough to make a reservation (+1 305 763 8860). The modern-eclectic furniture will spark conversation as you wait for your slow roasted lamb loin or yellow fin tuna. Looking for something with a Latin flair? Make a reservation at De Rodriguez on Ocean Drive (+1 305 672 6624). For a refreshing meal order a ceviche or try a signature ‘Drod’ dish like the Cuban Gnocchi. De Rodriguez even offers an extensive happy hour that is a surefire way to start the night.

Local cafés

Meander on over to Local House on Ocean Drive for lunch or brunch (+1 786 230 5495). Order an ‘ocean benedict’ and sip on bottomless mimosas in the quaint space.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this beachfront hotel in Miami and unpacked their swimsuits and sunscreen, a full account of their sun-soaked luxury break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hotel Victor South Beach…

Hotel Victor is breaking the mould. Miami hotels have, for years, drawn on their art deco architecture for inspiration, creating a world of chrome, pastels and clean lines. Don’t get us wrong, we love a good geometric pattern and vintage aesthetic as much as the next design fiend, but, when we walked into Ocean Drive’s latest reinvention, we breathed a sign of relief to find ourselves surrounded by the beach-house feel of repurposed driftwood tables, blue-and-cream-striped linen throws and burnished iron fixtures.

With the long stretch of sand that makes up South Beach just outside its back door, it’s no wonder that this low-key boutique hotel would channel this laid-back surfer style. Sure, it’s right on SoBe’s lively main drag, but it’s not a see-and-be-seen scene; instead, it’s the kind of spot where you lounge in a cabana by the pool with a book, step out straight onto the beach to dip your toes in the warm waves or maybe just soak in your marble bathroom’s tub. This is a new kind of South Beach.

We loved

The bed was one of those you just get in and melt away. You didn't want to get out of it. The location was also just in the middle of where you want to be. The bikes you can take out for an hour at a time were perfect for cruising right along the beach. Actually we loved using the taxi app Lyft which is much cheaper than Uber and certainly no problem to find one. This tip we got from our friend who lives in Miami. The other restaurant we would say to travel to is called Jaguar in Coconut Grove. Amazing Peruvian ceviche!

Don’t expect

A very large room, but it is still suitable.

EVERYTHING! Location was absolutely amazing. Staff were brilliant. The whole package was more than what we expected! The room was great - we had 415 and the view was amazing - sunrise was beautiful. Overall, I couldn't fault it at all. All the restaurants down Ocean drive are good. Mangos is definitely an experience! Lincoln Ave was brilliant for shopping. Madonna's hotel Delano on Collins was brilliant for a drink and some sushi. We took a 'Duck Tour' around town, which was super touristy but great. Monty's seafood restaurant was amazing! a little out the way from the hotel but the food was fab.

Don’t expect

To have an early night. Being on Ocean Drive, it's hard to not pop into one of the many restaurants/bars down the road for 'just one drink' and end up back in the early hours of the morning! (All the restaurants down Ocean had a Maitre D' who tried to entice you into their restaurants and they were a bit annoying. Felt a bit tacky.)

We loved

The location of the hotel and the fact that we could walk out the patio door of our room to the pool

Don’t expect

The front desk not have ice or towels brought to our room in a timely manner. Upon check-in and check-out that was the #1 complaint guest had.

We loved

Right on Ocean Drive for people watching at night, with the beach just across the road behind the dunes. Loud, noisy outside but calm and peaceful oasis inside the hotel. The pool was on the small side, but was on the roof and had great lounging beds with shade for coping with the heat of the day.

Don’t expect

No gourmet food around this area, but plenty of choice for cocktails and the usual American fare.
