Setting

Canal-bordered corner

Alexander Kølpin, once a leading Danish ballet dancer, brings his artistic flourish to Copenhagen des-res Hotel Sanders near his former office — the opera house. A show-stopping cocktail bar, carefully choreographed dining spaces and daily tastings of his family’s wine pay homage to his performing pedigree. Its rattan-dressed bedrooms and photograph-adorned walls set the scene for serenades, and you’re in the heart of Nyhavn should you wish to dance the night away.

Sustainability efforts

Strap in: Hotel Sanders takes its sustainability seriously. This Green Key-certified stay is also a member of the UN Global Compact. It's doing the fundamentals well — renewable energy sources, water-saving measures, avoiding plastic — but goes above and beyond, working with responsible collaborators, such as Faundit, who plant a tree for every shipment sent with them, and Daka Refood, who turns any dining waste into biofuel. The kitchen prioritises local and seasonal suppliers, and the menu is adapted based on what ingredients the team have sourced. Longevity has been considered when it comes to the interiors, not only in terms of durable and natural materials, but also in style — they aren’t trend-driven, opting for a timeless look instead to minimise future renovations. The hotel also champions charity programmes supporting vulnerable children and their families.

Food and Drink

Top Table

The leafy rooftop is a bright aperitivo spot, or opt for a street table for ample people-watching and outfit-coveting opportunities.

Dress Code

Like your hosts, keep things local in Ganni, Stine Goya and Cecilie Bahnsen.

Hotel restaurant

The set-up — in feel and flavour — at Sanders Kitchen is homely, but with a little bit of indulgence (you’re on holiday, after all). Globally loved dishes are injected with some Danish flair thanks to seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Family favourites include the lobster linguine, Sanders black truffle ‘bikini’ sandwich, and classic Caesar salad; start your day just as decadently with a Danish-style breakfast plate, avocado on rye or a buffet selection. You can plump for several locations as the setting for your memorable meals — streetside, the living room, rooftop or courtyard.

Hotel bar

Sanders’ owner and founder Alexander Kølpin is an ex-ballet dancer, a pedigree woven throughout the hotel’s DNA and embodied at Tata Cocktail Bar, named after the red curtain that hangs in the Royal Theatre which he would wait behind ahead of a performance. If you’re after a quick tipple pre-dinner or while you await your date, opt for one of the ‘mini cocktails’, half-size drinks that deliver equal punch; then settle in with a house Paloma as your final act. You can also take tipples in the rattan-furnishing-adorned rooftop space, and a daily wine hour is included with your stay — you’ll sample glasses from the Kølpin family’s vineyards, each vintage named after one of Kølpin’s children.

Last orders

Breakfast is 7am–11am; lunch, noon–2.30pm, and dinner, 5.30pm–10.30pm. The courtyard closes at 10pm; the rooftop, 11pm; the street and living room, midnight. Tata opens 5pm–midnight, Sunday to Wednesday; till 1am, Thursday; till 2am, Friday and Saturday.

Room service

Take breakfast in bed from 7am to 11am; or order from the kitchen’s all-day menu between noon and 10pm.

Hotel Sanders
Tordenskjoldsgade 15
Copenhagen

Denmark

You’ll find Hotel Sanders not far from the canal in central Copenhagen’s Nyhavn, close to waterfront Havnegade Promenaden.

Planes

Hotel Sanders is a 20-minute drive from Copenhagen Airport; staff can arrange private transfers, on request and for an extra charge.

Trains

Kongens Nyortv is your closest metro station, a few minutes’ walk from the hotel — line-two trains arrive from the airport in less than 15 minutes. It’s a convenient hub, as you can also hop on lines ones, three and four around the city from here.

Automobiles

The only set of wheels you’ll want is a pair — cycle around the city in true Scandi style. Walking and the metro are other convenient ways to cover ground, but should you choose to drive, there’s nearby paid parking at Sankt Annae Plads.

Worth getting out of bed for

Copenhagen is a city that shines throughout the year, something your hosts at Hotel Sanders celebrate with their ‘Little Red Book’, a collection of seasonal recommendations. Sneak peeks as to what you can expect include springtime at the Botanical Garden, summer swims at La Banchina, foliage-framed coffees in museum Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek’s palm garden, and escape-the-cold exhibitions at Thorvaldsen Museum

The concierge can also arrange canal rides in their private boat, backstage tours of The Royal Playhouse, guided historical walking tours or curator-led visits to select neighbourhood galleries. You can also rent bikes from the hotel to look like a true native, and ask staff to pack you with a picnic basket for a wholesome afternoon out.

Local restaurants

Bistro Pastis will teleport you to Paris with its white tablecloths, butter-rich French fare and fine Gallic vintages — a glass of champagne with the vinaigrette-doused oysters is an apt way to kick things off. Cool and oh-so-Copenhagen, Ripotot pairs bottled-lined and candlelit interiors with modern European plates and natural wines. And for a taste of proper Italia, Resto Bar is a cosy neighbourhood spot in Vesterbro with an open kitchen, homemade pasta and a generous slab of tiramisù.

Local cafés

For pastries that look almost too pretty to eat and expertly roasted brews, swing by Hans Coffee for a day-starting boost. Cult-favourite Atelier September draws a brunch-hungry queue for its ‘morning plate’, a perfect balance of savoury (Comté, boiled eggs, salty butter, bread) with a little something sweet (berry jam).

Local bars

Beau Marché caters to all whims: it’s a homeware boutique set in a leafy courtyard, and its adjoining café pours morning brews and into-the-evening glasses of wine, which pair well with French snacks and sandwiches — ideal shopping fuel. For inventive cocktails in a quirky setting, you’ll want to run to Balderdash

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this home-comforts hotel in Denmark and unpacked their Scandi designer buys and bottles of the owner’s wine, a full account of their bijou break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hotel Sanders in Copenhagen…

There’s an art to creating a stay that has a familiar, comforting feel, but is also a welcome retreat from reality — Hotel Sanders hits that sweet spot.

This polished pied-à-terre is near the opera house, a place that holds fond memories for Sanders’ owner and founder, former ballet dancer and family man Alexander Kølpin. It will inspire similar affection in you with its peaceful bedrooms and seasonal kitchen that serves to convivial corners across the hotel. A free, daily hour of Køplin’s own wine, with each bottle named after his children, also charms. Or perhaps it’s the romance of whisking extended family to standalone Sanders Residence that you’ll fall for.

Central Copenhagen’s loved galleries, cafés and bars are on your doorstep — or a leisurely cycle away — and staff are armed with a ‘Little Red Book’ of seasonal recommendations. There’s a real sense of care throughout, which is only bolstered by Hotel Sanders’ evergreen commitments to the environment and local community.
