Setting

Wave-blessed Oaxacan coast

Hotel Humano may bring a design-focused, modernist polish to hang-loose Puerto Escondido, but the Pacific waves still set the mellow metronome. Catching world-famous breaks at the beach (a five-minute walk away) is a rite of passage around here, but catching z’s by the palm-fringed pool is just as encouraged. And after you’ve found your inner peace during a yoga or sauna session, beeline for the rooftop bar and pair those ocean sunset views with seafood tacos and something tequila-laced. It’s all about balance, after all...

At the hotel

Public beach nearby, rooftop terrace, bikes to borrow and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: air-conditioning, minibar, free glass-bottled water, bathrobes and locally made bath products.

Our favourite rooms

In the Pool Garden Room, a morning dip is just a matter of slipping on a robe and slinking through your terrace to the pool. Swing for an Ocean View Suite and you’ll be able to peep the Pacific from your private pool.

Poolside

The pool forms the focal point of the hotel. Gaze out from your room at the tropical greenery and day-beds made for two; once you clock the steady mezcalita-to-sunlounger flow, it won’t be long before you succumb to its gravitational pull. There’s also a small pool up on the rooftop terrace for close-to-the-sun soaks.

Spa

You'll find the sauna and cold plunge pool tucked away in a quiet courtyard. Book a private session for a romantic ritual (or to screech ‘cold cold cold’ without witnesses). There’s also a massage room, for wave-pummeled muscles in need of some love and loosening.

Packing tips

Your trusty Havaianas will see you right in most situations round here, but have sturdier footwear on hand in case you take one of the hotel’s bikes out for a spin.

Also

Eagle-eyed design fans might spot the odd European influence amid the rooms’ custom, Mexican-made furnishings. Charlotte Perriand’s Pivotante à Poser lamp makes a fun Easter egg for mid-century modern buffs.

Children

This laidback coastal stay is adults-only.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Snag a spot in the thatched poolside area and you’ll be in pole position for a postprandial swim — or sunlounger nap.

Dress Code

Throw a few floaty layers and a stack of beaded bracelets over your bikini.

Hotel restaurant

The Bistró’s all-day menu is full of beachy feelgood staples — fresh-caught seafood tacos, zingy ceviche and salads laden with locally grown produce. Marseille-born chef Marion Chateau brings her French influence to evening menus, where you might find tomato galette or fried courgette flowers, alongside mahi-mahi crudo and the barbecued catch of the day.

The hotel’s lofty-ceilinged lobby wears many hats: in the mornings, it’s a juice bar and café serving locally roasted coffee, pastries and Mexican teas; from 6pm, it moonlights as the Bistró’s dining room.

Hotel bar

You'll find the Sunset Bar up on the rooftop — three guesses what the scene-stealer is here. The craft cocktail menu makes imaginative use of local flavors, and the pool does its best to pull your focus. But come golden hour, it’s all eyes on the ocean as the sun sinks below the horizon.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at the Bistró from 8am to noon, lunch from noon to 6pm and dinner from 6pm to 10pm. The Sunset Bar pours from 9am to 10pm.

Address
Hotel Humano

Puerto Escondido

Mexico

Hotel Humano is set on a lively street in La Punta, a surf-heavy beach town in Puerto Escondido on Mexico’s Oaxacan coast.

Planes

Flights from major hubs including Mexico City, Oaxaca City and Houston touch down at Puerto Escondido International Airport; from there, it’s a 20-minute drive.

Automobiles

There’s no carpark at the hotel, but on-street parking is available nearby.

Worth getting out of bed for

Start the day strong with a sunrise yoga or Pilates class on the rooftop terrace. Playa Zicatela’s wide golden sands are a short walk away. Expert surfers can make their way to the beach’s northern end for the Mexican Pipeline’s adrenalin-pumping breaks; otherwise, ask hotel staff about surf lessons. Take a straw-in-coconut stroll — or borrow a bike — and explore the beach’s full length, heading north to find locally loved markets and cafés.

Local restaurants

Atarraya pairs refined Mexican food, meticulously crafted cocktails and moody lighting for maximum cool points. For tostadas and cocktails in a fairylit courtyard, make your way to María Sirena. At Sommo, decadent sushi feasts are soundtracked by live DJs.

Local cafés

Malagua is a laidback spot for coffee, fresh-baked pastries or a tropical fruit-laden brunch. Look past La Casa del Surfer’s corny name — this is a sunny bet for an alfresco breakfast or lunch, with all-organic menus including acaí bowls and mango-topped fish tacos.

Local bars

Toes-in-the-sand Bikini Bar is best known for its swing seats and piña coladas served inside pineapples, but fun gimmicks aside, they serve a mighty fine margarita.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this barefoot hotel in Mexico and unpacked their surf gear and sunset snaps, a full account of their Pacific coast break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hotel Humano in Puerto Escondido…

Puerto Escondido is a place of many personalities — surfing pilgrimage site, boho wellness hangout and in recent years, an offbeat art haven. Hotel Humano deftly weaves all these threads together, and put the non-negotiables of a Puerto stay all in one place — namely, a palm-fringed pool, fish tacos and the beach a sub-five-minute walk away. Eat-pray-lovers can drift between dawn yoga classes, sauna sessions and cold plunges. And in the heart of La Punta, you’re well-placed to dip a toe in the sandy local bar scene.

But with a few well-chosen twists, the city’s barefoot soul gets a buff. Earthy, traditional architecture hides chrome-sleek modernist rooms, and at the restaurant, the Marseille-raised head chef brings a Gallic inflection to the moreish menus. For evenings on the rooftop terrace, though, the basics are all that’s needed: a paloma, a plus one and the sun setting over the Pacific.
