Style

Firing on all cylinders

Setting

Lush Oaxacan oceanfront

Alberto Kalach’s vernacular architecture at adults-only Casona Sforza quite literally speaks volumes: its conscious design is composed of cylindrical shapes that spotlight ancient brickwork techniques, frame the lush landscape and allow energy to flow freely. It might sound a bit woo-woo, but you’ll soon settle into its holistic rhythm with its beach-facing restaurant, cenote-like circular pool and breeze-kissed bedrooms. And with its Earth-kind ethos and locally rooted experiences, this casa is a ‘sforza’ to be reckoned with…

Our favourite rooms

The overarching (pun intended, sorry) themes at Casona Sforza are lofty stonework, minimalist design and open-air architecture. Each cylindrical suite is a love letter to local craftsmanship and community, with artisan-made textiles and regionally sourced materials. The Private Pool Junior Suites are set a stone’s throw from the beach, and each have their own plunge pool; upstairs, hole up in the view-blessed hammock or in-room wooden soaking tub in a Seafront Senior Suite. For an extra steamy stay, the Hot Tub Master Suite has an egg-shaped hot tub on its spacious terrace that’s made for two.

Poolside

The circular saltwater pool, which lies on the greenery-framed beach, evokes the region’s mythical cenotes. Its full-moon form is orbited by sand-set deckchairs, woven hammocks and a suspended stone jetty. Its steps-from-the-ocean setting adds to the all-natural ambience, but the waves are best for surfers. For something more secluded, each ground-floor suite comes with its own plunge pool that’s big enough for two.

Spa

There’s no formal spa but holistic therapies, such as reiki or massages, can be arranged in your suite or at the alfresco treatment room. The hotel also has a sauna and ice bath.

Packing tips

A keen eye for design.

Children

This design-led retreat is for over-18s only.

Sustainability efforts

Casona Sforza is a force of nature: it’s deeply invested in the Pueblo del Sol community, collaborating with it for materials, suppliers and staff, plus ceramics and coffee from its workshops and plantations. The organic bath products are made in-house; recyclable and compostable materials are favoured over plastic, and native plants are protected through the hotel’s conscious design.

Food and Drink

Top Table

On the edge of the drapes-framed dining room for uninterrupted glimpses of the pool.

Dress Code

Polished bohemian; you could go barefoot for the full free-spirited look, but we’re more inclined to don a pair of Isabel Marant sandals.

Hotel restaurant

Instead of walls or windows at open-air La Bóveda, you’ll find snapshots of the sea and circular pool bordered by the hotel’s exposed-brickwork design. In the kitchen, chef duo Andres Trujillo and Vanessa Franco are the architects of seasonal plates that put a Mediterranean spin on hyper-local produce, with catch-of-the-day ceviche, homemade pizza and pasta, and garden salads. Honey, vanilla and coffee are sourced from Pueblo del Sol in the mountains — the hotel’s community project — and these farm-fresh ingredients are best relished in breakfast pastries and moreish desserts, such as the affogato

Hotel bar

La Bóveda’s bar is a speakeasy-style space that stirs up a mean negroni, shakes up classic cocktails and pours natural Mexican wines. Settle in for a smoky mezcal tasting, which is soundtracked by curated playlists and backdropped by rustic-luxe interiors.

Last orders

At La Bóveda, breakfast is from 8am to noon; lunch is between 1pm and 5pm, and dinner is served from 6pm to 10pm; its bar pours until 11pm.

Room service

You can order dishes from the restaurant’s menu to your door between 8am and 10pm.

Address
Casona Sforza
La Barra de Colotepec
Puerto Escondido
70934
Mexico

Near Puerto Escondido on the Oaxacan coastline, beachfront Casona Sforza is an architectural feat just south of surf spot Punta de Zicatela.

Planes

Puerto Escondido International Airport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel; staff can arrange private transfers from US$25 each way. Two and half hours away by road is Oaxaca’s international airport.

Automobiles

Wheels will come in handy as you’re set a 15-minute drive from La Punta’s restaurants and cafés, and two is best: opt for a moped to zip to bars and beaches. There’s free outdoor parking at the hotel, or ask staff to arrange tours and taxis for you instead.

Worth getting out of bed for

There’s a lot at Casona Sforza that might fill your camera roll — arch-framed architecture, beachfront setting, circular pool — and the same can be said of its Oaxacan locale. The ocean takes centre stage here: get your surf on in a lesson on Carrizalillo beach; visit the Santuario Playa Escobilla to coo over nesting turtles from June to September, and just-hatched babies in October; or squeal over playful pods on dolphin-watching charters. Staff can also arrange bird-spotting boat trips through Chacahua’s labyrinthine mangroves that conclude at a bioluminescent lagoon, and ziplining adventures through the lush jungle. And for something a little more cosmopolitan, an hour’s drive away is Casa Wabi, an avant-garde art foundation with rotating exhibitions and immersive experiences.

Local restaurants

Long-loved Chicama is a neighborhood favorite for Peruvian-inspired plates and zesty cocktails and ceviche. At Smith-approved Casa To, Glou Glou pours slips-straight-down organic wines and dishes up date-night-worthy dinners of locally sourced produce. Laidback Fish Shack La Punta is the place for fried fish and fresh shrimp tacos, washed down with cucumber margaritas, of course.

Local cafés

Swing by Café Suku’un for a pre- or post-surf pitstop, where tropical juices and protein-packed smoothie bowls will fuel you as much as the caffeinated brews. Malagua is the community’s go-to brunch spot, thanks to its loaded avocado toast, stacked-high pancakes and iced coffees.

Local bars

If shaggy surfers or skater boys are your type, then you’ll find your match at the Boneyard, a cool-kid hangout with burgers, margaritas and a show-off-your-tricks skate bowl. Juana Mezcala is spirited in both senses: its drinks showcase Mexico’s agave-based tipples, and live music keeps the tempo upbeat.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this aesthete’s-dream hotel in Oaxaca and unpacked their copal incense and local coffee, a full account of their beachfront break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Casona Sforza in Puerto Escondido…

Oaxaca’s coastline is developing into a design-hungry hot spot, with architectural masterpieces dotting its surfer-attracting shores. Our latest artistic obsession is adults-only Casona Sforza, the brainchild of Alberto Kalach who also constructed Smith sister stay Terrestre, which lies north of Puerto Escondido.

Casona Sforza’s eye-catching structure delivers on style and substance: the antiseismic vaulted shapes create a telescope effect, looking from ocean to jungle, and are naturally cooling with their open-air design and locally sourced brickwork. And just as energy circulates freely from the showstopping pool to the bohemian restaurant and terrace-toting suites, so does a seamless integration with nature.

Its pared-back interiors are enlivened with bold handwoven textiles and hammocks sourced from color-loving artisans. Community remains at its core with its nature-rooted excursions to off-grid mangroves and nurturing turtle sanctuaries, and menus of seasonally sourced ingredients and regional flavors.

Its design is captured strikingly in photos, but its spirit is tangible in other ways.
